Chapter 25
Inside the Magistrate Office, An Jin—or rather, Uchiha Ryo—was still shamelessly listening to the System's insults as if they were compliments.
The System had just finished saying,
"Host, after traveling across countless worlds, I have concluded that if stupidity were treasure, you would be poorer than a beggar. But if shamelessness were treasure, you would be richer than all emperors combined."
Ryo nodded seriously.
"Thank you."
"I wasn't praising you."
"I know."
The System nearly exploded.
Just as it was preparing a new round of verbal attacks—
DING!
A mechanical voice suddenly echoed.
It sounded colder and far more artificial than the System.
[Congratulations Host.]
[All three Main Missions have been completed.]
[Mission 1: Pass the Imperial Exam.]
[Mission 2: Obtain an Official Position.]
[Mission 3: Heal An Jin's Mother.]
[Mission Completion Rate: 100%]
[You will return to your original world in 10 minutes.]
[Would you like to name and lock this world as one of your three permanent world slots?]
Ryo froze.
The System froze.
For a few seconds, both remained silent.
Then Ryo slowly turned toward the floating panel.
"System."
"Yes, Host?"
"Was that your twin brother?"
"..."
"Or are you possessed?"
"..."
"Should I perform an exorcism?"
"..."
The System's face darkened.
"Host, I do not have a twin brother."
"What about a cousin?"
"No."
"A distant uncle?"
"No."
"A forgotten child?"
"I DON'T HAVE CHILDREN!"
Ryo nodded.
"So it really was possession."
The System felt a headache despite not having a brain.
After calming itself, it explained,
"That was my pre-recorded function."
"It automatically announces important events."
"Such as mission completion."
"World locking."
"And return countdowns."
Ryo stroked his chin.
"Hmmm."
"So it's your baby."
The System's screen instantly filled with random symbols.
[FJGH@#GSH!#GH!#HTH@]
Ryo pointed at it.
"Look."
"It even inherited your speaking habits."
The System wanted to strangle him.
Unfortunately, it had no hands.
A moment later, Ryo suddenly frowned.
"Wait."
The System felt danger.
Whenever Ryo said "wait," something troublesome followed.
Sure enough—
"When I passed the Imperial Exam, I got a mission-completion notification."
"Yes."
"When I healed An Jin's mother, I didn't get one."
"..."
"When I obtained the official position, I didn't get one either."
"..."
Ryo narrowed his eyes.
"System."
The panel began sweating imaginary sweat.
"Are you slacking?"
The System immediately chose the safest option.
Playing dead.
The blue panel floated silently.
No response.
No movement.
No life signs.
Ryo poked it.
Nothing.
He poked it again.
Still nothing.
Finally he shrugged.
"Well, doesn't matter."
The System secretly sighed in relief.
Then Ryo continued,
"From now on, immediately notify me whenever a mission is completed."
The System instantly revived.
"Understood."
"Good."
"Also..."
The System felt danger again.
"Where is my reward?"
"..."
The System almost forgot.
A moment later, its attitude changed completely.
The panel straightened itself like a soldier reporting to a commander.
"Oi oi, Captain!"
Ryo frowned.
"No."
The System ignored him.
"As Captain requested, all mission rewards shall be delivered directly to storage upon return to your original body, Captain!"
Ryo's eyebrow twitched.
"I understand."
"Excellent, Captain."
"But don't call me Captain."
The System immediately changed gears.
"Understood, Sir."
Ryo sighed in relief.
Too early.
Far too early.
The System continued,
"Then from now on, I shall address Host as—"
The panel flashed dramatically.
'OH MIGHTY LORD!'
'SAVIOR OF LIFE FROM THE DEMON!'
(which is you, by the way)—whispered the System.
'THE HOLINESS OF LIGHT!'
'THE GREAT BLOOD-EYED LORD!'
'THE SUN OF ALL CIVILIZATIONS!'
'THE MOON OF ALL WORLDS!'
'THE DESTROYER OF EXAM FAIRNESS!'
'THE NIGHTMARE OF HONEST SCHOLARS!'
Ryo's face twitched harder with every title.
The System was having the time of its life.
Finally—
"STOP."
The System stopped.
"Never call me any of those."
The System looked disappointed.
"I still had thirty-seven more prepared."
"Delete them." Ryo said with clenched teeth.
"I spent effort making them."
"DELETE THEM ALL." Ryo almost shouted.
The System reluctantly obeyed.
Several minutes passed.
The return timer steadily counted down.
[00:01:00]
[00:00:59]
[00:00:58]
The atmosphere gradually became quieter.
Ryo simply stood there silently.
His mission was complete.
An Jin's future was secured.
His mother was healed.
The Dong and Dugu families were busy trying to kill each other.
The Emperor and Yan Pei had become allies who will check in balance troubles of inside and outside.
The plague had been solved which didn't had the time to spread and become a big bad wol- hmm, a big disaster.
Everything was finished.
The System suddenly spoke.
Its voice was surprisingly calm.
"Host."
"Hm?"
"Will you lock this world?"
Ryo thought for a moment.
Then he nodded.
"No."
The System seemed surprised.
"Why?"
Ryo smiled.
"Because this world is weak."
"..."
"And?"
"The people are easy to fool."
"..."
"And?"
"The food was bad, not to my liking."
The System felt that the third reason was somehow the most reasonable.
The countdown reached zero.
[00:00:03]
[00:00:02]
[00:00:01]
[Returning Host...]
A familiar darkness appeared.
The world began to blur.
Ryo felt his soul separating from An Jin's body.
The capital disappeared.
The sky disappeared.
The earth disappeared.
Soon only darkness remained.
Then countless colorful lights appeared around him.
Worlds. Small worlds. Big worlds. Countless worlds.
Like stars floating inside an endless black ocean.
The System spoke one last time.
"See you in your original body, Host."
Ryo grinned.
"Try not to get possessed by your twin brother before then."
"I DON'T HAVE A TWIN BROTHER!"
The vortex swallowed everything.
And Uchiha Ryo's soul began its journey back to his true body.
