Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Trouble

The convoy moved fast along the empty stretch of highway east of Washington, D.C... four black SUVs in escort formation and two armored transports in the center.

Inside the second transport, Priya's family sat in tense silence: her mother clutching her father's hand, her younger brother staring wide-eyed at the armed soldiers seated across from them.

The soldiers were polite but firm, repeating the same scripted lines about "protective custody" and "national security."

High above, Marcus descended like a shadow.

He landed silently on the road directly in front of the lead SUV, forcing the entire convoy to screech to a halt.

The black hoodie was gone.. replaced by a simple dark t-shirt and jeans but the calm, unyielding presence was unmistakable.

The convoy doors flew open. Soldiers poured out, rifles raised, red laser sights dancing across his chest.

A senior officer stepped forward, megaphone in hand.

"Solaris! Stand down! You are under arrest for assault on federal officers and destruction of government property. Do not resist or we will open fire!"

Marcus stood motionless in the middle of the road, hands visible at his sides.

His voice carried clearly, calm and measured, yet powerful enough to be heard by every person in the convoy.

"I'm not here to fight you. I'm here for the family in the second transport. Priya Sharma's parents and brother. Release them. They have nothing to do with this. Let them go, and I'll leave peacefully. No one gets hurt."

The officer's face hardened. "Negative. The Sharma family is in protective custody. You are a national security threat. Surrender now or we will use lethal force."

Marcus's eyes narrowed slightly. He could hear the fear in the soldiers' heartbeats, the nervous clicks of safeties being flicked off.

He could also hear Priya's mother quietly crying inside the armored vehicle.

"I asked nicely," he said, voice still calm but now carrying a colder edge. "I won't ask again."

The officer raised his hand to signal the order to fire.

Marcus moved.

In a blur of super speed that left afterimages, he crossed the distance between them before the first trigger could be pulled.

He didn't attack the soldiers.. he simply disarmed them with precise, non-lethal touches: rifles yanked from hands and crushed into useless scrap, sidearms flicked away into the desert.

Soldiers were gently but firmly moved aside, none of them injured, only stunned and disoriented.

Then he focused on the second transport.

With a thought, he extended tactile telekinesis.. an invisible, controlled field of force that wrapped around the armored vehicle like a giant hand.

The heavy transport lifted smoothly off the ground, tires spinning uselessly in the air.

The rear doors unlocked with a soft click under his precise control. Priya's family stumbled out, wide-eyed and trembling.

Marcus floated down beside them, speaking gently.

"I'm a friend of Priya's. She sent me to get you out. You're safe now. No one will hurt you."

Priya's mother stared at him, tears streaming down her face. "You're… him. The one from the news."

"Yes," Marcus said simply. "But right now I'm just the guy trying to keep your daughter safe. Come with me."

He gathered the three of them in his arms.. one hand supporting Priya's father, the other her mother and brother and launched upward in a controlled, gentle ascent.

The soldiers below could only watch helplessly as the family disappeared into the night sky.

Marcus flew them west at high speed but kept the ride smooth, shielding them from the wind and cold with a thin layer of tactile telekinesis.

Less than twenty minutes later he set them down gently in the parking lot of the high-end motel where Priya was waiting.

She burst out of the room the moment she saw them, running into her mother's arms with a sob of relief.

"Mom! Dad! Are you okay? I'm so sorry.. "

Marcus stood back, giving them space. He watched Priya hug her family tightly, tears flowing freely now.

Her brother clung to her like she was a lifeline. Her father looked at Marcus with a mixture of gratitude and wary awe.

"You brought them back," Priya whispered, looking over her mother's shoulder at him. "Thank you."

Marcus nodded once. "Stay here. Lock the door. I'll be back soon."

He kissed her forehead quickly, then launched back into the sky without another word.

He returned to the convoy less than ten minutes later.

The soldiers had regrouped. More vehicles had arrived.. additional military units, a couple of black unmarked vans.

The officer in charge was shouting into a radio when Marcus landed silently in the middle of the road again, exactly where he had been before.

This time there was no polite request.

Marcus's voice was low, cold, and carried the weight of someone who had spent fifty years learning exactly how dangerous he could be.

"You took her family to use as leverage against me," he said, eyes glowing faintly with restrained power. "That was a mistake."

The soldiers raised their weapons again, but their hands were shaking.

Marcus continued, stepping forward slowly. "I don't want to hurt any of you. I don't want a war with your government.

But if you ever touch Priya's family or anyone I care about again, I will come back. And next time I won't be gentle."

He let his eyes flare brighter for just a moment not enough to fire, just enough to remind them what those beams could do.

Then, without another word, he rose into the sky and vanished eastward, leaving the convoy standing in stunned silence on the dark highway.

Joint Task Force "Solaris" Command Center

The room was in chaos.

General Voss slammed his fist on the table as the live feed showed the convoy standing idle, the transport empty, the family gone.

"He took them. In front of armed soldiers. Lifted the entire vehicle like it was a toy and flew off with the family. No casualties. No real damage. Just… took them."

Dr. Lang from Monarch Protocol stared at the screen, pale. "He's sending a message. 'Touch my people and I will come for you.' We just made an enemy out of the most powerful being we've ever encountered."

SHIVA's voice cut through the noise, still eerily calm.

"Entity 'Solaris' has demonstrated willingness to directly confront military forces to protect personal attachments. Threat level upgraded to Critical. Red Sun Emitter Array deployment now classified as Priority Alpha. Emotional leverage strategy has backfired. Recommend immediate de-escalation or preparation for direct engagement."

General Voss rubbed his face, suddenly looking much older.

"Stand down the pursuit for now. Pull the family's protective custody order. Make it look like a paperwork error. And get those red-sun prototypes online yesterday."

He stared at the empty stretch of highway on the screen where Marcus had stood moments earlier.

"We just poked a god," he muttered. "And he poked back."

The singular king still slept far beneath the waves.

But on the surface, the world had just learned that the man they called Solaris would not hesitate to protect what was his.

And the scales were beginning to tip.
