Chapter 41 - Chapter 41:Emotional Gap

The classroom was calm.

Too calm, perhaps—but not in a way anyone would question.

"Turn to page thirty-two."

The teacher's voice was steady, practiced.

Pages flipped almost in unison.

"Flip… flip…"

Velarisse followed along, her fingers resting lightly on the edge of her book.

Ink lines. Clean notes. Everything in order.

Everything as it should be.

She listened.

She wrote.

She existed within the rhythm of the class without effort.

And yet—

something didn't align.

"The answer is simple," the teacher continued, writing across the board.

A student raised their hand.

"Yes?"

"Isn't that the same as what we discussed earlier?"

A small pause.

The teacher smiled faintly.

"Yes. It builds from that concept."

Velarisse stilled.

Not visibly.

Just enough for her to notice it herself.

[We already talked about this.]

Her gaze dropped to her notes.

Lines filled the page neatly.

Everything recorded properly.

Nothing repeated.

Nothing duplicated.

Nothing out of place.

And yet—

the feeling remained.

Like she had already sat through this moment.

She looked back up.

The teacher continued explaining.

Students nodded.

Someone whispered to their seatmate.

A quiet laugh followed.

Normal.

But Velarisse felt it again.

Not memory.

Not recognition.

Familiarity.

The kind that didn't belong to recorded events.

[Why does this feel like it already happened?]

She didn't move.

Didn't react.

But the question stayed.

She flipped back a page.

Then another.

Carefully.

Nothing.

No repeated notes.

No earlier explanation matching this exactly.

Everything was correct.

Which made it worse.

If something was wrong—

she would find it.

Fix it.

Understand it.

But nothing was wrong.

And yet—

it still felt wrong.

Velarisse's gaze shifted slightly across the room.

Not searching.

Just moving.

Until it stopped.

Lunivara sat near the window.

Straight posture.

Calm expression.

Focused.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing out of place.

But—

something about her presence didn't settle correctly.

Not in memory.

Not in awareness.

Like looking at something clear—

but not being able to hold onto it.

Velarisse frowned slightly.

[She was here earlier…]

Of course she was.

They were in the same class.

That wasn't strange.

But—

the sense of it…

felt unstable.

Velarisse tried to follow the thought.

[She was sitting there.]

Yes.

[She answered earlier.]

Did she?

Velarisse blinked once.

The memory wasn't missing.

It was there.

But it didn't feel anchored.

Like it belonged to the moment.

She looked back at her notes again.

Everything aligned.

Everything was consistent.

Except—

her sense of continuity.

Velarisse straightened slightly in her seat.

[This isn't right.]

But what wasn't right?

The class?

No.

The lesson?

No.

The people?

No.

Everything was functioning exactly as it should.

So why—

did it feel like something was slipping between moments?

Her fingers tightened slightly around her pen.

[Am I just distracted?]

That would be the simplest explanation.

But it didn't feel like distraction.

It felt like something she should understand—

but couldn't reach.

The teacher called on another student.

They answered.

The class moved forward.

Velarisse followed.

She participated.

She responded when needed.

Everything she did—

was correct.

But internally—

she felt like she was catching up to something that had already passed.

Not behind in knowledge.

Behind in feeling.

Her gaze shifted once more.

Back to Lunivara.

This time—

she looked longer.

Not staring.

Not obvious.

Just… observing.

Lunivara wrote something down.

Paused.

Then continued.

Composed.

Steady.

Normal.

And yet—

Velarisse felt something again.

A faint pull.

Not emotional.

Not logical.

Just—

awareness.

[Why does she feel… more present than everyone else?]

The thought came quietly.

Unexpectedly.

And lingered.

Velarisse looked away.

[That doesn't make sense.]

There was no reason for that thought.

No basis.

No evidence.

Lunivara was simply another student.

Nothing more.

Velarisse lowered her gaze again.

[It's not jealousy.]

That much was clear.

There was no competition.

No comparison.

No resentment.

If anything—

Lunivara felt… distant.

Not in behavior.

But in presence.

Like she existed clearly—

but didn't fully "connect" to the flow around her.

And somehow—

that made everything else feel slightly off.

The bell rang.

"Ding—"

Students began to move.

Chairs shifted.

Voices returned.

Velarisse stood with the rest.

Collected her things.

Walked with the flow.

Everything resumed normally.

But the feeling remained.

Unresolved.

Unexplained.

And growing.

As she stepped into the corridor—

Velarisse paused for just a moment.

Not enough for anyone to notice.

[If something is wrong…]

A quiet thought.

Incomplete.

[…then what is it?]

She didn't finish it.

Because she didn't even know what she was trying to ask.

And that—

was what made it unsettling.
