Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19 - Following the Thread

"The thread," said Duan Hei, without preamble, because he never used preamble. He considered preamble a form of dishonesty, the verbal equivalent of walking around the thing you meant to approach directly. "You found a thread in the foundational layer of the Myriad Sovereign Realm."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

"You have not followed it," Duan Hei said.

"Not yet," Meng Tianyuan said.

"Not yet," Duan Hei repeated. The two words were not a mockery. They were a measurement, an assessment of the gap between the current state and the intended state, delivered with the precision of someone for whom gaps between states were the primary unit of analysis. "You returned here first."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

Duan Hei was quiet for a moment. His fractured eyes held something in them that was not frustration exactly, because frustration implied an expectation of different behavior that had been violated, and Duan Hei did not expect different behavior from him because he had learned, across the long history of their existence together, what the behavior would always be. What his eyes held was the specific feeling of someone who knows the outcome and wishes the outcome were different and has made peace with the fact that their wish does not alter the outcome.

"You returned here," Duan Hei said, "because the thread is significant enough that following it without preparation is not what you intend to do. You are here to prepare."

"I am here," Meng Tianyuan said, "to be certain."

Ling Bai spoke, and her voice carried in it the specific quality it always carried when she was delivering information she had already organized completely and was presenting in its final form. "The thread you found has properties consistent with Creation Dao and Eternity Dao as fundamental components rather than applied techniques. The probability of this occurring naturally in the foundational layer of any universe-space is below the threshold of meaningful calculation."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

The Central Chamber was quiet.

The specific quiet that followed was not the ordinary silence of the Supreme Temple, which was itself extraordinary. This was a silence that carried the weight of something all three of them understood and none of them had yet said, a silence of held breath in existences that did not need to breathe, the silence of three things that had been together long enough to know when the moment required waiting rather than speaking.

Ling Bai was the one who finally spoke.

She said, with the complete absence of anything other than accurate information delivery that was the only way she knew how to say anything: "We felt it also. When you found the thread. The quality of it. We recognized what Creation Dao and Eternity Dao as fundamental properties indicates about the origin of the thing the thread leads to."

She paused.

This pause was not the pause of someone who did not know what to say next. It was the pause of someone who knew exactly what to say next and was making the specific internal adjustment that very precise beings make when they are about to deliver information that has both factual content and emotional content and they need to determine what the correct proportion of each is for this particular delivery.

"We have not interfered with your decision to be certain before acting," she said. "We will not begin now."

"I know," Meng Tianyuan said.

Duan Hei said, without his usual smooth delivery, in a register that was slightly different from his ordinary tone, the register of something that was being said without its protective coating of lightness: "If the thread leads where the properties suggest it leads, then the decision you make about how to follow it is not a tactical decision. It is something else."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

"Do not be careful," Duan Hei said. And then, a moment later, as if he had listened to his own statement and found it incomplete: "Be careful. But do not let being careful become a reason to not move."

Ling Bai said, to Duan Hei, without inflection: "Those two instructions are in direct contradiction."

"They are in creative tension," Duan Hei said.

"Creative tension," Ling Bai repeated, in the tone she used when she was acknowledging the existence of a statement without endorsing its content.

Meng Tianyuan looked at them both.

Something in his face moved. Not a smile in the ordinary sense and not the shadow of one either. Something deeper and quieter than both, the specific movement of a face that has carried a great stillness for a very long time and feels, in the presence of these two particular existences and their particular quality of disagreement about him, a quality that was not warmth in the mortal sense but occupied the same space in his existence that warmth occupied in mortal ones.

He lay back down within the Coffin.

"Tell me what you have observed," he said. "While I was in the Myriad Sovereign Realm's foundational layer. What moved in the Dream Gaze that I was not watching."

Ling Bai spoke first, because organizing information for delivery was a function that was more natural to her than to Duan Hei, who had his own observations but presented them differently.

"The world of Qianhen," she said. "The underground chamber. The map construction has reached approximately ninety-one percent of its estimated completion based on the spatial coverage of the crystalline coordinate growth. At the current growth rate, the remaining nine percent will be complete in a time span corresponding to thirty-seven days within Qianhen's local temporal framework."

"Thirty-seven days," Meng Tianyuan said.

"Yes. She has been working at an accelerated rate since your last contact. The acceleration is not urgency in the distressed sense. It is the specific acceleration of someone who has been working alone and has felt, for the first time, the quality of being observed by something that understands what it is observing. The acceleration of someone who wants to finish what they are showing because someone is finally there to see it."

Meng Tianyuan received this.

"The Tianfeng world," Ling Bai continued. "The elder has made contact with two of the remaining four threatened sect locations via emergency messenger talisman systems she located in the underground repository's emergency stores. One location has responded. Their sect grand elder is currently organizing an evacuation of non-combat disciples to secondary sites. The other location has not responded, which is either communication failure or the second intervention occurred before the elder's warning arrived."

"The second intervention," Duan Hei said, flatly.

"Consistent with that assessment," Ling Bai confirmed. "The ambient Dao fluctuation from that world's direction carries a signature similar to the wrong-fire residue from the Tianfeng attack. The second target has been struck."

Meng Tianyuan was still.

"Survivors," he said.

"Unknown from this distance," Ling Bai said. "The Fate Dao threads from that direction are present but unclear. There are living threads. The number cannot be assessed accurately without closer observation."

"Noted," Meng Tianyuan said.

Duan Hei spoke. "There are eleven other worlds in the active interference category that have each shown escalating activity during the period of your Myriad Sovereign Realm operation. Escalating in the specific sense of the interference mechanisms becoming more visible, less concealed. As if whatever is directing the interference is aware that one of its operations was neutralized in the Myriad Sovereign Realm and is accelerating its timeline in the remaining active theaters."

"It learned," Meng Tianyuan said.

"Or whoever sends it learned," Duan Hei said.

"Or both," Ling Bai said, which was the kind of correction she made when both options in a binary were simultaneously accurate and leaving one out was a form of imprecision she was not willing to accept.

Meng Tianyuan lay within the Coffin and he looked at the inside of the Coffin's pale surface, at the violet veins that ran through it from below, at the quality of the light that the seven star-circles produced when seen from inside the Coffin rather than from outside it, which was a different quality, an inward-facing light rather than an outward-facing one, and he thought about eleven worlds whose interference mechanisms were accelerating, and a second target in the Tianfeng world's region that had been struck while he was occupied with the Myriad Sovereign Realm, and a map thirty-seven days from completion in an underground chamber that its maker had been filling with thirty years of patient silence, and a thread in the foundational layer of universe-space with the signature of Creation and Eternity running in a direction he had not yet followed.

He thought about all of these things simultaneously, which was not a feat that required effort, which was simply the ordinary operation of a perception as complete as his, holding everything that was present in a single coherent awareness without the need to sequence or prioritize or reduce.

Then he made his first decision.

"The eleven worlds with accelerating interference," he said. "I will address the three most critical within the next cycle of observation. Not by descending. Through targeted Fate Dao correction at the foundational level, the same approach as the Myriad Sovereign Realm but shallower and therefore less demanding in terms of presence. The interference mechanisms are escalating but they are not yet at the point the Myriad Sovereign Realm reached. The corrective threshold is lower."

"Three," Duan Hei said, with the tone of someone doing mathematics and finding the result inadequate. "Eleven worlds. Three corrections. The eight that are not addressed in the first cycle will continue to escalate."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

"So we address three and watch eight continue to worsen," Duan Hei said.

"We address three," Meng Tianyuan said, "and the three we address stabilize in ways that reduce the pressure on the surrounding worlds in the network, because the interference is not operating in isolation from world to world. It is networked. The eleven affected worlds are connected to each other in the interference structure the way the Tianfeng world's seven targets were connected to each other through the spiritual vein network. Remove the right nodes and the network loses coherence. Three is sufficient if they are the correct three."

A pause.

Duan Hei said: "You have already identified which three."

"Yes," Meng Tianyuan said.

"Then why did you explain the selection logic instead of simply telling us which three."

Ling Bai said, to Duan Hei: "Because the explanation was for you, not for him."

Duan Hei was quiet for a moment.

Then: "Noted."

"The second decision," Meng Tianyuan said, "is the thread."

Both of them were still.

Not the stillness of suspension or uncertainty. The complete stillness of two existences that have arrived at the moment they have been waiting to arrive at and are receiving it with everything they have.

"I will follow it," Meng Tianyuan said. "Not to its end. Not in this cycle. I will follow it far enough to determine its direction and the condition of what it connects to. I will do this carefully, which means slowly, which means I will not attempt contact in this approach. Observation only. Assessment only."

Duan Hei said, quietly, with none of his usual edge: "And if what you find at the end of it requires more than observation."

"Then I will return," Meng Tianyuan said, "and we will discuss what more than observation looks like."

Ling Bai said: "That is a reasonable approach."

Duan Hei said, after a pause that was the pause of someone who agreed with a statement but found the word reasonable inadequate for the size of what it was being applied to: "Yes."

Meng Tianyuan closed his eyes.

The seven star-circles on the surface of the Coffin shifted. The silver threads of the Fate Dao brightened first, extending outward in lines that were not visible to any perception below a certain absolute threshold, lines that ran through the Coffin's surface and through the walls of the Supreme Temple and through the void of universe-space and into the foundational layer with the quiet precision of something that knew exactly where it was going. Then the deep blue of the Time and Space Dao seal, the star-fracture pattern within it opening slightly, creating pathways through the dimensional architecture that connected the Supreme Temple's location outside existence to the specific point in universe-space where the thread had been found.

Ling Bai watched.

Duan Hei watched.

Neither of them spoke.

The Dream Gaze extended in a direction it had not extended before._________!
