Chapter 246: Eight Days
The war room in Bastion Six was cramped and freezing.
A badly drawn parchment map of the southern approach lay spread across a heavy wooden table. Vinicius, a young Vanguard officer with a jagged, faded scar across his jaw, pointed at the faded perimeter lines.
"The numbers are bad," Vinicius reported flatly. "We have three hundred and twelve men fit to hold a spear. The rest of the garrison are walking wounded from the invasion, and the rest of those are too hungry to stand a full watch. We have roughly seventy arrows per archer. The heavy ballistas are dry."
He traced a finger along the southern boundary of the city.
"The southern wall is only half-rebuilt," Vinicius continued. "The heavy iron scaffolding is still bolted to the stone. And the food stores are bare. We are starving."
