Chapter 246 - Love at First Sight, Uesugi Kenshin

Chapter 246: Love at First Sight, Uesugi Kenshin

Musashi Province, Kaede Village.

The clearing outside the local shrine was overflowing with desperate bodies. It was not just the native villagers taking shelter; refugees from over a dozen surrounding settlements across eastern Musashi had fled here, driven by the encroaching slaughter. They huddled together in the dirt, knuckles white as they clutched rusted hoes, wooden pitchforks, and dull sickles. Every face was turned upward, watching the sky with hollow, terrified eyes.

They were running from the ravages of a war that had ceased to be human.

At the outermost edge of the shivering crowd, Momiji and Botan stood as the final line of defense.

Momiji's black hair whipped wildly in the wind, tied back into a strict ponytail. The hem of her red hakama snapped sharply against her legs as she gritted her teeth, her fingers locked in a rigid hand seal. The paper talismans clamped between her knuckles burned with a faint, desperate spiritual light.

On the opposite side, Botan's blue-and-white shrine maiden robes were smeared with ash and mud. Her round face, usually soft and timid, was slick with cold sweat. Her hands trembled violently as she forced the incantation past her lips.

Above them, a massive dome of white spiritual light stretched over the village like an inverted glass bowl, shielding the refugees from the nightmare outside.

Beyond the barrier, to the northwest, a dark, suffocating tide was spilling over the ridgeline of the hills.

One glance was enough to confirm this was no mortal army. Human ashigaru and rogue samurai clad in splintered, bloodstained armor marched shoulder-to-shoulder with grotesque horrors. Above their crude infantry formations, a swarm of giant moths blotted out the grey sun.

These beasts were the size of full-grown oxen. Their massive wings were stamped with eerie, unblinking eye patterns that seemed to stare down at the fleeing humans. With every heavy flap of their wings, a shower of golden, toxic powder drifted toward the earth. The moment those glittering scales touched the ground, the lush vegetation instantly blackened, withered, and curled into ash.

Demons.

An endless, dense swarm of them. An entire legion of monstrous moths.

Beneath the towering wooden Torii gate, Naoe Kanetsugu stood her ground.

The young girl's petite, slender frame was clad in dark blue light armor, a pristine white jinbaori draped over her shoulders. Her dark brown hair was pulled into a high, practical ponytail. She possessed no extraordinary spiritual power. Beneath the collar of her armor, the blood mist mark planted by Kobe Hikaru still pulsed against the skin of her neck, physically restricting her movements to a five-mile radius.

Yet, at this exact moment, she was the sole military commander present—even if the title was entirely temporary.

She barked orders, directing the few able-bodied village men to form a crude spear wall behind the barrier's edge. Her gaze remained locked on the distant, darkening horizon, her jaw tight.

"How much longer can the barrier hold?" Kanetsugu demanded, her voice cutting through the panic.

"Half an hour... probably," Botan replied, her voice cracking with undisguised terror.

Cold sweat poured down the young shrine maiden's spine, her knees knocking together beneath her robes. The human rebels were one thing, but the sheer volume of the moth demons was paralyzing. The concentrated demonic aura—the Yao Qi—rolling off the swarm was thick enough to choke on, tearing at their courage.

Kanetsugu maintained a facade of absolute calm. As the Grand Administrator of Echigo Province, she had witnessed massacres far more gruesome than this. "Even if you can't hold it, you must hold it. Do not let it fall."

Momiji didn't answer; she only bit her lip hard enough to draw blood, pouring more of her fading energy into the talismans.

Meanwhile, the vanguard of the moth army had closed the distance, hovering a mere two hundred paces from the flickering barrier. The largest beasts at the front let out piercing, clicking hisses, angling their massive bodies for a dive.

Behind her stoic expression, Kanetsugu was cursing viciously. She cursed the northern warlords for taking advantage of the chaos, and she cursed Hikaru even more. The undead samurai had casually handed her temporary administrative control over the region, yet he hadn't bothered to leave her a single soldier to defend it.

As the main deity of the two provinces, she had been granted the authority to govern Musashi by the Hojo Clan, but the Hojo army was entirely outside her jurisdiction. There simply hadn't been enough time to draft and assemble a proper 'Divine Servant Army'. Facing a coalition of rogue nations and demon tribes spilling out from the northeast, organizing farmers with pitchforks was nothing more than a desperate death struggle.

The northeastern region, bordering the untamed barbarian tribes, had always been a lawless zone where humans and demons mingled. But they had always lingered outside the 'Pass', never daring to march south, as if held back by an invisible wall.

Now, that wall had clearly shattered.

The chaotic thunder of marching boots and snapping war banners drew closer. The deafening hum of insect wings vibrated in the refugees' teeth as even more moths launched themselves into the sky.

Just as the first wave prepared to crash against the barrier, a long, low horn blew from the northeast.

The sound was deep, continuous, and commanding.

On the opposite ridge, cutting through the toxic golden dust, a massive war banner pierced the sky. A stark black 'Bi' character painted on a pure white background fluttered violently in the wind.

The suffocating, deathly fanaticism of the demon swarm was suddenly broken. The new presence felt intensely alive. This was an army of living, breathing humans—soldiers who spoke, cursed, and guarded each other's flanks. Their faith was intense, but the underlying tone had fundamentally shifted. It was no longer the blind, mindless obedience of religious zealots, but a deep, heartfelt devotion to a single leader.

The vanguard of Hime-mushas formed a flawless shield wall at the front. Their weapons radiated the blinding golden light of divine power, forcibly carving a sanctuary out of the demon-infested battlefield. The sheer pressure of their advance halted the Moth Legion in its tracks.

At the head of the formation, Uesugi Kenshin sat atop a pristine white warhorse.

She wore a short, fitted white armored battle outfit, detailed with blue-purple patterns tracing the collar and cuffs. The hem of her coat fluttered over the saddle. Unlike the heavy, traditional monk's robes worn by her predecessor, this attire was sleek and practical, revealing her calves wrapped tightly in white gaiters.

A longsword hung at her waist, its scabbard adorned with tiny silver bells that chimed a crisp, rhythmic melody with every step her horse took. A simple white headband held her long hair back, allowing deep indigo strands to fall gracefully past her shoulders, swaying gently in the wind.

Her dark, expressive pupils scanned the battlefield.

If Hikaru had been standing there, he would have instantly recognized the stark differences. Compared to the previous generation of Uesugi Kenshin—with her silver-white hair, golden eyes, and bone-chilling aloofness—this woman was an entirely different entity. Her features were just as striking, but they radiated a warm, obvious humanity. She was slender and well-proportioned, matching her predecessor's height, but the confident way she wore her armor and rested her hand on her sword left no illusion of weakness.

She pulled back on the reins, halting her horse right in the center of the standoff. Her gaze drifted past the screeching moth demons, locking onto the fragile barrier protecting Kaede Village.

Kanetsugu stared at the figure on the white horse, her breath catching in her throat.

"My Lord."

Deep indigo hair, purple eyes, a white headband, and a faint, confident curve at the corners of her mouth. She looked exactly as she did in Kanetsugu's fractured memories.

A long, shuddering breath escaped Kanetsugu's lips.

Kenshin gracefully dismounted.

Momiji and Botan stared at the legendary War God, the living Incarnation of Bishamonten, too stunned to even breathe.

"My Lord," Kanetsugu said, bowing her head deeply in a formal salute.

"You have worked hard during this time, Kanetsugu. I apologize for keeping you waiting so long," Kenshin replied. Her voice was clear, pure, and entirely devoid of aristocratic arrogance.

Kanetsugu blinked, a wave of dissonance washing over her. It felt as though something fundamental was wrong, yet simultaneously, entirely right.

My Lord has always been the first to apologize.

She was pure and direct. It had always been this way.

"Why have you come? What about Echigo...?" Kanetsugu hesitated, struggling to find her words.

"I have come to repay a debt." Kenshin looked up at the massive moths circling above, the dark shadows of their wings reflecting in her purple eyes. Her tone was light, yet carried an unshakable solemnity. "I did some things in the past that should never have been done. Forcibly bestowing names, besieging this land... Those actions were wrong."

She paused. Even though those sins belonged to the previous generation, she was still Uesugi Kenshin. She carried the weight of that name, and she refused to run from its legacy.

", the northern barrier has collapsed," Kenshin continued, her hand resting naturally on her hilt. "In the past, Mount Hakurei suppressed the northern territories. The horrors from the north could not cross over. Now that the holy mountain has fallen, the northern warlords have allied with the demon tribes to cross the border. Musashi was simply the first stone they chose to trample."

She drew a breath, her aura flaring. "In the name of Righteousness, I must protect the people here."

Sensing the overwhelming threat of Bishamonten's divine power, the Moth Legion erupted into a frenzy of piercing screeches. Hundreds of the giant beasts abandoned the village barrier, banking sharply in the sky to dive-bomb the Uesugi Army.

Kenshin's grip tightened on the hilt of her sword.

Yet... she did not draw it.

Before she could unsheathe the Hachikatentou—the divine blade her predecessor had only ever flashed but never truly wielded in combat—the sky tore open.

A jagged rift of purple-white lightning exploded across the high dome of the heavens. The oppressive grey clouds were violently sliced down the middle by an invisible, catastrophic force. Sunlight and crackling electricity poured through the wound in the sky.

Two figures descended from the blinding light.

Kikyo landed silently atop the wooden Torii gate. Clad in her pristine white robes and red hakama, the shrine maiden stood immovable in the howling wind, her longbow already gripped firmly in her hand.

A few yards ahead, Kobe Hikaru hovered in mid-air, positioning himself squarely between the two colliding armies.

His grey robes snapped violently around him. His long, pale hair whipped upward, the tips stained a faint, metallic blood-red. His Crimson Demon Eyes swept coldly across the battlefield, calculating the threat before landing on the figure standing beside the white horse.

Not silver-white hair. Not golden eyes.

Long, straight indigo hair, a white headband, dark pupils, and a blue-and-white battle outfit.

Hikaru's eyes narrowed slightly. Though this was their first actual meeting, his pragmatic mind instantly deduced the truth. The Uesugi Kenshin standing below him was not the arrogant god he had forced to her knees before her five hundred personal guards.

This was a new generation.

But there was no time to analyze the mechanics of her resurrection. He was floating alone before a thousand rebel troops and a swarm of massive, toxic demons.

He didn't speak. He simply reached for his waist.

Onikiri was unsheathed.

There were no flashy opening stances, no wasted movements, and no battle cries. There was only absolute, concentrated Ultimate Intent focused entirely on the razor edge of his blade.

Dark red blood-fire erupted from his Shura Heart, roaring through his veins. Ghostly purple mist violently burst from his Shura Lungs. Yang and Yin, hellfire and freezing death, perfectly intertwined as he swung his sword.

A single, horizontal slash. Level and absolute.

There was no deafening roar of an explosion. There was only a massive, expanding arc of intertwined red and purple light that swept across the entire northwestern front.

One strike.

Ultimate Intent: Army Breaker.

Hikaru smoothly sheathed his sword.

The very second the guard of Onikiri clicked against the scabbard, the world caught up to the violence.

The ground emitted a sickening hum before violently cracking open, dense fissures spider-webbing outward for miles. In the sky, the giant moths froze. Their massive wings instantly ignited with dark red fire. Hundreds of the colossal beasts were reduced to drifting ash in mid-air before they could even force a scream from their mandibles.

Below them, the charging rebel army and the miscellaneous ground demons disintegrated. Armor, weapons, and flesh shredded apart like wet paper caught in a hurricane, wiped from existence in a single heartbeat.

Silence slammed down over the battlefield.

Uesugi Kenshin stood perfectly still, her hand still resting on her undrawn sword.

Her purple eyes were locked entirely on the grey-robed figure floating in the sky.

Slowly, involuntarily, her knees softened. Just a fraction of an inch.

Deep within her soul, the Soul-Searching Seed left behind by Hikaru was instinctively reacting to his overwhelming presence. It wasn't fear, nor was it mindless obedience. It was a deep, obvious confirmation.

Confirmation that this was the man who had shattered the previous Incarnation of Bishamonten. This was the man who had brought the previous Uesugi Kenshin to her knees.

But immediately following that spiritual confirmation came a completely different, entirely human reaction.

Her heart violently skipped a beat.

Standing beneath the violently split sky, watching his pale hair flutter in the fading lightning as he calmly sheathed his sword after annihilating an army...

That singular image acted like a physical blade, piercing directly into a place in her chest that her divine predecessor had never even known existed.

...Handsome.

That single, ridiculous word was the only coherent thought that managed to surface in Uesugi Kenshin's mind.

And then, she blushed.

She blushed without warning, a fierce, burning red that rapidly spread from the tips of her ears all the way down to the collar of her armor. She desperately tried to convince herself it was just the residual heat wave rolling off the incinerated moth demons.

All around her, the surviving Uesugi Army, Kanetsugu, the shrine maidens, and the huddled refugees held their breath.

They stared at the sky, utterly shocked, completely horrified, and incredibly fanatical.
