Chapter 109 - Ten Cars, One Finish Line

Chapter 93

The starting line stretched across the asphalt like a wound in the darkness, a row of white paint marking the boundary between anticipation and action.

Elijah guided his deep blue sports car into position between two other vehicles, his hands steady on the steering wheel and his red eyes fixed on the track disappearing into the shadows beyond the reach of the overhead lights.

Ten drivers had gathered for the main event, their cars arranged behind the line while their engines rumbled with enough force to vibrate through the ground and into Elijah's chassis.

Mai remained in the passenger seat beside him, her hands resting in her lap and her purple eyes wide with anticipation. Her earlier complaints about Elijah's driving had disappeared beneath the excitement of the approaching race.

Elijah extended his Ki sense across the starting area, examining each competitor. Seven drivers were at the Advanced Knight Stage Initial level, possessing dense and controlled Ki comparable to his own.

Two others had reached the Advanced Knight Stage Mid level, their stronger and more refined auras revealing months or even years of additional cultivation.

The final competitor, a woman with short black hair and cold gray eyes seated directly to Elijah's left, had reached the Advanced Knight Stage High level. Her Ki was so dense that it pressed against his senses like a physical weight.

The concept of Ki infusion was still relatively new to Elijah. After reaching the Advanced Knight Stage, his Ki had become sufficiently dense and stable to leave his body and strengthen external objects.

Weapons could become sharper and more durable, tools could be enhanced beyond their ordinary limits, and objects infused with Ki could respond more readily to their user's will.

For the race, however, the most important application was the car.

When a cultivator infused Ki into a vehicle, the machine became an extension of its driver's body.

The engine could produce greater power, the tires could maintain their grip under extreme pressure, and the frame could withstand forces that would normally damage it.

The effectiveness of the enhancement depended largely on the driver's Ki and their ability to control it.

Every driver in the main event was using the technique.

Elijah placed both hands against the steering wheel and closed his eyes, reaching inward toward the Ki core pulsing behind his heart.

Energy answered immediately, flowing down his arms and into his palms before spreading through the car's metal frame, engine, tires, and other components.

The sensation was strange and exhilarating.

He could feel the engine cylinders firing and the tires pressing against the asphalt, almost as though his awareness had expanded beyond his own body.

The vehicle no longer felt like something he was merely driving. It felt like a second body waiting for his commands.

The flag dropped, and all ten cars launched from the starting line.

Their engines screamed as tires spun against the asphalt, briefly filling the air with smoke before the vehicles surged forward.

Elijah pressed the accelerator down, and his car responded with a violent burst of power that shoved him against the seat.

Mai gasped beside him as the scenery immediately became a blur of lights and shadows.

The first lap descended into chaos.

Cars fought for position through the opening turns, weaving dangerously close to one another while their tires shrieked whenever drivers pushed them beyond their comfortable limits.

Elijah kept his attention divided between the road ahead and the competitors surrounding him, using his Ki sense to track vehicles even when they disappeared from his direct line of sight.

His car responded beautifully to every adjustment.

When he needed to brake, the vehicle reacted instantly.

When he shifted his weight through a turn, the tires maintained their grip.

Every movement of his hands translated into precise changes in the machine's behavior.

By the second lap, Elijah had overtaken two Advanced Knight Stage Initial drivers.

He approached each corner carefully, studying the racing lines of the competitors ahead before exploiting their mistakes.

One driver entered a turn too aggressively, forcing Elijah to brake later and take the inside line.

Another drifted too wide on the following curve, leaving enough space for Elijah to slip past before accelerating away.

By the third lap, he had climbed from tenth to sixth.

The fourth lap brought him against the two Mid-level cultivators, and the difference in their abilities became immediately apparent.

Their Ki was denser, their infusion more refined, and their vehicles seemed to respond to their commands with effortless precision.

Elijah pushed harder, but the gap refused to disappear.

On the straightaways, their superior Ki allowed their engines to produce greater acceleration.

Through the corners, their years of experience gave them better control over their speed and positioning.

Elijah could match them for brief stretches, but every mistake cost him valuable distance.

By the seventh lap, he had settled into fifth place.

The slower drivers had fallen far behind, leaving only the strongest competitors ahead.

Trevor remained in first, while the two Mid-level drivers and the High-level woman occupied the positions between Trevor and Elijah.

The eighth lap passed without incident, followed by a ninth in which Elijah maintained his position while searching desperately for an opening.

Unfortunately, none appeared.

His opponents were too experienced to give him an easy opportunity, and his Ki reserves were steadily approaching their limit.

As the tenth lap began, Elijah realized that fourth place was probably the best result he could achieve.

Then the race changed.

The High-level woman entered a corner too quickly and lost control of her racing line.

Her car slid several meters before she corrected it, costing her precious seconds.

One of the Mid-level drivers immediately slipped past her on the inside, while the other moved to prevent her from reclaiming the position.

The three cars became tangled in a dangerous contest, creating a narrow opening ahead of Elijah.

He saw it immediately.

His Ki reserves were almost exhausted, however.

Constantly maintaining the infusion had consumed far more energy than he had anticipated.

Although his Advanced Knight Stage regeneration was already replenishing his reserves, the process was too slow to matter before the finish line.

He could accept fourth place and treat the race as a valuable lesson.

Instead, Elijah remembered every fight that had brought him here, every opponent who had once seemed stronger, and every time he had survived because he refused to accept defeat before the battle was truly over.

His fingers tightened around the steering wheel as he reached for Zenith.

The technique activated at one hundred fifty percent.

Power flooded through his body.

His muscles immediately tightened under the strain, while his bones seemed to groan beneath the sudden pressure.

His Ki core struggled to sustain the enormous increase in energy output, and pain spread through his chest as the technique forced his body beyond its normal limits.

At the same time, the Ki flowing through the car intensified.

The engine roared with renewed force, the tires bit into the asphalt, and the entire vehicle surged forward.

Elijah shot through the opening.

The two Mid-level drivers barely had time to react before the blue sports car swept between them.

One attempted to close the gap, but Elijah had already committed to the maneuver.

He clipped the inside of the turn, forcing his tires dangerously close to the edge of the asphalt before straightening the car and accelerating away.

The High-level driver was next.

Her gray eyes appeared in the rearview mirror as she recovered from her earlier mistake and accelerated after him.

Her car was powerful, and her Ki control was superior, but Elijah's enhanced infusion gave him a burst of speed that even she could not immediately match.

The finish line approached rapidly.

Elijah's vision blurred at the edges, his breathing had become harsh and uneven, and his empty Ki core felt as though someone had scraped it hollow from the inside.

Nevertheless, he kept both hands locked onto the steering wheel and forced himself to maintain control.

Trevor crossed the finish line first.

The High-level woman crossed second.

Elijah followed only a fraction of a second later.

He killed the engine and remained in his seat for several seconds, his chest heaving while his trembling hands slowly relaxed around the steering wheel.

His Ki core was completely depleted, and a ravenous hunger suddenly clawed at his stomach.

He had experienced the sensation before, after reaching the Advanced Knight Stage, and recognized it as his body's desperate demand for the energy required to replenish what he had burned through.

Despite the exhaustion, satisfaction spread across his face.

Mai immediately turned toward him, concern replacing the excitement in her eyes.

"Elijah, are you okay? What happened at the end? You were falling behind, and then you suddenly accelerated like you had been holding back the entire time."

Elijah took a slow breath before opening the door.

His legs were unsteady when he stepped onto the asphalt, forcing him to brace himself against the car for a moment.

"I'm fine," he said, although his exhausted voice made the claim less convincing. "I had one technique left that I could use."

Mai remained close beside him, watching his face carefully.

Before she could question him further, Trevor approached with an enormous grin.

"Third place in your first race, against drivers who have been competing for years, is incredible," Trevor said. "I've raced on this circuit for a long time, and I've never seen anyone recover that much ground on the final lap."

Elijah laughed, although the sound came out rough from exhaustion. "I had something left in the tank that I didn't know about until the end. It was risky, and I'm not sure I could repeat it, but it worked."

Trevor clapped him firmly on the shoulder. "That's what makes a real competitor. You do not have to win every race. What matters is that you keep looking for a way forward when everyone else thinks you've already lost."

Mai was still holding Elijah's arm, her purple eyes fixed on him with an expression he could not quite understand.

She did not let go, and Elijah found that he did not mind her staying beside him.

The hunger remained, gnawing relentlessly at his stomach, but for the moment he ignored it.

Under the harsh finish-line lights, surrounded by roaring engines, cheering spectators, and drivers celebrating their victories, Elijah allowed himself to enjoy the strange satisfaction that came from competing for nothing more than the thrill of testing his limits.

For the first time in a long while, the victory did not matter as much as the feeling of having pushed himself to the edge and discovering that he could still go farther.
