Chapter 44 - Emotional Reaction

"Reset."

The word came again.

Kai stepped back into position.

But this time, something had changed.

Not the system.

Him.

He looked across the floor.

Elephant stood calm.

Unchanged.

Untouched.

That stayed with him.

They had just completed the same sequence.

Clean.

Without struggle.

And Tiger had broken under it.

Again.

Kai exhaled slowly.

Then stepped forward.

This time, he did not wait.

"Begin."

He moved.

Fast.

First step sharp.

Second step aggressive.

He pushed through the timing.

Forced the transition.

The structure bent.

But did not hold.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Jaw tight.

He ignored it.

"Again."

He stepped forward immediately.

No hesitation.

No adjustment.

"Begin."

He moved faster.

Trying to match what he had seen.

Trying to close the gap.

The sequence shifted.

He pushed through it.

Too early.

Too much.

The structure collapsed instantly.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Breathing heavier.

Frustration rising.

"They're not better," he said.

Mateo looked at him.

"Yes, they are."

Kai shook his head.

"They're just moving faster."

"No," Mateo said.

"They're moving correctly."

Kai stepped forward again.

"I can do that."

Mateo did not respond.

He did not need to.

Kai entered again.

"Begin."

He moved.

Faster.

More force.

Trying to overwhelm the sequence.

Trying to force alignment.

It failed.

Again.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

His chest tightened.

He felt it building now.

Anger.

Not controlled.

Not focused.

Reactive.

He looked at Elephant again.

Still calm.

Still precise.

Still unaffected.

That made it worse.

They were not struggling.

He was.

He stepped forward again.

"I'll match it."

Luna spoke quietly.

"You're increasing error."

Kai ignored her.

"Begin."

He moved.

First step forced.

Second step rushed.

Third step unstable.

The sequence broke.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Breathing uneven now.

Mateo spoke.

"This is worse."

Kai snapped.

"I'm fixing it."

Mateo shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"You're reacting."

Kai stepped forward.

"I'm pushing harder."

Mateo held his gaze.

"That's the problem."

Kai clenched his fists.

"If I don't push, I fall behind."

Luna spoke.

"You are falling behind because you push."

Kai looked at her.

Frustration sharp now.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does," she said.

"You are fighting the system."

Kai shook his head.

"I'm trying to match it."

"No," Luna said.

"You are trying to beat it."

Silence.

That landed.

Kai did not respond.

Because it was true.

He was not trying to understand Elephant.

He was trying to overcome them.

To prove he could match them.

To close the gap through force.

He stepped forward again.

"Begin."

He moved.

Faster than before.

More aggressive.

Less controlled.

The sequence broke immediately.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Breathing heavy now.

His timing gone.

His control slipping.

Each attempt worse than the last.

The gap widening.

Not closing.

Mateo stepped forward.

Executed.

Clean.

Unchanged.

Luna followed.

Adjusted.

Maintained.

Kai stepped in.

He forced himself forward again.

The result was the same.

Failure.

"Stop."

He stepped back.

Silent.

The anger remained.

But it had not helped.

It had made it worse.

He looked across the floor again.

Elephant remained the same.

Calm.

Controlled.

Unaffected.

Kai felt it clearly now.

His reaction was not closing the gap.

It was widening it.

But he did not know what else to do.
