Chapter 34 - Misreading the System

The pattern was there.

Kai just could not hold it.

He stood in position, watching the flow.

Entry.

Pause.

Transition.

Exit.

It repeated across every squad.

Clean.

Consistent.

Predictable.

Until it was not.

The timing shifted.

Subtly.

Barely visible.

Kai stepped forward.

"Begin."

He watched the sequence ahead.

Waited.

Tried to read the opening.

Now.

He moved.

Too early.

The student ahead had not cleared fully.

The spacing collapsed.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Jaw tight.

He had seen it.

Or thought he had.

"Again."

They reset.

Kai focused harder.

Tracked the sequence.

Watched the transitions.

Counted the rhythm.

Now.

He stepped in.

Too late.

The opening had already passed.

The sequence moved on without him.

"Stop."

Kai exhaled sharply.

He stepped back.

Frustration rising.

The window was there.

He just could not hit it.

Mateo stepped forward.

No hesitation.

He entered at the exact moment.

Not early.

Not late.

Correct.

Completed the sequence.

Clean.

Kai watched.

Trying to understand what he was missing.

Luna followed.

She waited.

Not guessing.

Watching.

Then stepped in.

Aligned.

Finished.

Kai stepped forward again.

His turn.

He tried to match what he saw.

Not force.

Not rush.

Just read.

The sequence shifted again.

Different spacing.

Different rhythm.

Kai hesitated.

Then committed.

Wrong moment.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Breathing uneven.

This was not just timing.

It was perception.

And his was off.

Mateo spoke.

"You keep missing it."

Kai snapped.

"I know that."

"Then fix it."

Kai clenched his jaw.

"I'm trying."

Mateo's frustration showed now.

Small.

But clear.

"You're not reading the system."

Kai frowned.

"I am."

"No," Mateo said. "You're reacting to it."

Kai stepped forward.

"What's the difference?"

Mateo answered immediately.

"You're always behind."

Silence.

That landed.

Kai looked forward again.

At the sequences.

At the movement.

At the openings he could not catch.

Luna spoke quietly.

"You are focusing on the wrong reference."

Kai looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"You are watching the action."

A pause.

"Instead of the transition."

Kai frowned.

"I am watching both."

"No," Luna said.

"You commit after movement begins."

Kai paused.

That was true.

He waited to see it.

Then moved.

Too late.

"You need to move before the shift is visible," she continued.

Kai shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does," Luna said.

"The system signals before it changes."

Kai frowned deeper.

"I don't see that."

Luna did not respond.

Because that was the problem.

He could not see it.

They reset again.

Kai stepped forward.

Determined.

He would catch it this time.

He watched closely.

Every movement.

Every shift.

Every step.

Now.

He moved.

Too early.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Frustration rising again.

Mateo stepped in.

Executed.

Clean.

Luna followed.

Adjusted.

Maintained.

Kai stepped forward again.

He tried something different.

Wait longer.

Make sure.

The sequence moved past him.

Too late.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Breathing heavier.

The pattern repeated.

Early.

Late.

Never correct.

Never aligned.

Luna adjusted when she could.

Small shifts.

Timing compensation.

But she could not fix entry.

Mateo maintained structure.

But he could not slow it.

Kai broke it.

Every time.

Not the same way.

But consistently enough.

The failure was clear.

Kai stepped back into line.

Silent now.

No argument.

No frustration outwardly.

Just focus.

And the realization.

This was not about effort.

Not about speed.

Not about strength.

He had all of those.

But it did not matter.

Because he could not see the system correctly.

He was not just behind.

He was misreading it entirely.

And until that changed...

Nothing else would.
