Chapter 16 - Side Mission 4: The Law of Blood

Onyx was walking through, her lips turned upwards as she took in the beautiful nature around her.

After spending so long locked away, she can't help but look in awe at the beauty of the world.

With Anna sparring with the kids all morning, Onyx decided on spending the day enjoying the woods.

Plus, she wanted to get away from Anna; Onyx shivered at the thought of being squeezed by her again.

BOOM!

A gust of wind shook the trees around Onyx.

She ignored it, assuming that it was just Anna going hard against them again while sparing.

"That woman doesn't know restraint," muttered Onyx.

Watching brings up the feeling when she was younger, training Nox and other children she had taken in.

Sometimes she wished she had her body back so she could teach Sami herself as well.

"I can't wait to gain all my powers back; being stuck as a bunny while cute sucks," Onyx complained.

Keeping herself in suspended animation while powering the runes that kept her and Nox(the Minotaur) locked away drained her completely.

It doesn't help that her ability to get energy from light isn't working.

Onyx kicked a stick on her path, dejected with how weak she is. Truthfully, she could gain her powers back faster by drinking human blood.

Yet she refuses to go down that path of being evil again, especially with Sami believing there was good still in her.

Admittedly, Onyx became the first vampire because of a curse long ago; she didn't necessarily need blood to live; it makes it easier for her to recharge her abilities (when drained).

Time passed as Onyx enjoyed her time walking around. "Huh, I didn't realize how much time had passed." As she noticed that the sun was setting.

"Hmmm, maybe I should go hunt an animal; it's been a few weeks since they've had deer. Though yak would be good for dinner."‌ She muttered, tapping a finger on her cheek.

Onyx shrugged her shoulders and set off, just walking through the forest. Whatever animals she comes across, while she hunts.

Onyx preferred to do the hunting, not only so she had something to do, but it gave her an excuse to drink blood from the animals she killed.

The magic in the blood was something she hoped would help her recover her own magic, which had been recovering slowly.

Absorbing light, mainly the light from Sami, did help, but she hadn't asked since they'd entered the forest.

Sadly, she hasn't been able to use the ability since becoming a rabbit.

A stick snapped, breaking Onyx out of her thoughts. Turning her neck, she saw a deer running quickly ahead of her.

Onyx rushed forward, catching up to the deer that was running through the forest. Onyx, running to the side of the deer, raised her hand, pointing it at the deer.

"Shadow Dart," Onyx chanted.

An arrow made of shadows formed out of her palm before shooting forward and going straight through the deer's body, hitting its heart.

The deer stopped in place before falling to the ground, no longer moving as its life was gone. Blood fell to the ground from the small hole in its side.

Onyx quickly ran forward and began drinking the blood, making sure to catch drops of blood about to hit the ground.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Little bunny, so this is what you've been doing when you go hunting," a voice mocked.

Onyx jumped, glancing up; she saw Anna squatting on the other side of the deer, staring at her. Onyx wondered how she had appeared before her without her noticing.

"It's not what it looks like," Onyx tried to explain as she waved her arms back and forth.

"No, you broke my heart, bunny, you broke my heart," Anna cried out as tears began to pour down her face.

Onyx just looked at the disturbed woman, a bead of sweat on the side of her head. Not knowing what to do, she walked over to Anna.

She tried to comfort her by slowly rubbing her back in circles.

Onyx hoped that this would help Anna, but knowing this eccentric woman, it would probably make her even crazier.

"Oh, my precious bunny!" Anna cried as she hugged Onyx tightly. "Suspect something, but to be one of those bloodsuckers, oh why my bunny, why!"

"Let me go!"

"Being a vampire is illegal in the Kingdom. My poor bunny, I'll have to kill you. Just know it'll destroy me knowing that I, Anna, took your life," cried Anna, ignoring Onyx's voice.

"WHAT?!" Onyx screamed, struggling against Anna's hold. "I seriously don't want to die!"

"Sigh, fine only because you begged."

Anna quickly released Onyx, letting her drop softly on the ground.

Onyx was shocked by how quickly Anna accepted her vampirism; suddenly, an oppressive feeling overcame her as her legs began to buckle.

"Just know if anything happens to my students because of you, I'll make sure you suffer for as long as I live," Anna growled, her threatening tone.

Onyx nods quickly in agreement.

That was the first time she had ever seen Anna seriously, and she hoped never to see it again.

A couple of minutes later, Anna plops herself right in front of Onyx. No words were needed as Onyx healed Anna.

"Why is being a vampire against the law?" Onyx asked.

Anna shrugged, "I don't know; It's been a rule for years now, though there was an incident of someone using blood magic. However, that was a unique situation that also made blood magic illegal."

Hmm, interesting

"My turn for a question! How much of Sami's growth is based on his own abilities compared to how much he got from the familiar bond with you?"

Onyx pondered the question as she worked on reducing the swelling on Anna's head.

Even back in the woods, Sami seemed to adapt quickly to the situation, even learning her spells without using shadow magic without any issues.

"Truthfully, the talent is all his," replied Onyx. "Even when we first met, he seemed to adapt to the situation even though he was scared."

"Hmm, I wonder if he has some latent talent," Anna stated before falling into silence.

Onyx didn't continue the conversation. Truthfully, she didn't know what to tell Anna. Sami's ring was special, and once people learned it was the first king's ring, it would cause a riot.
