Chapter 333 - The Twin Bond

Day 410. 11:15 hours.

Olympus.

The central mansion.

The Atrium.

Ji-yoo was eating ramyeon when the twin-bond changed.

Not broke.

The bond did not break — the bond had survived the first timeline and the second timeline and the freeze and the seven and the spy reveal and the births and the deaths and three hundred and ninety-eight days of frozen world.

The bond shifted.

The bond went from steady to spiked, from calm to alarmed, the particular shift that meant the twin was not in danger — the twin was choosing danger.

The twin had found something that made him choose to stay instead of come home, and the choosing was the shift, and the shift was the thing that made Ji-yoo's chopsticks stop.

"Oppa." Ji-yoo breathed, and the word came out not as the annoying word or the clingy word but as the word she had used when she was four and scared in the closet under the stairs — the word that meant what are you doing, the word that meant why did the bond change, the word that meant the twin had made a decision and the decision was not before dinner.

The chopsticks fell.

The ramyeon bowl clattered on the narra table, the broth spilling across the wood, and the household looked up and saw Ji-yoo's face and the household — knew.

Not because Ji-yoo said anything.

Because Ji-yoo's face was the face of a woman whose twin had just changed, and the household had been around the twins long enough to know that Ji-yoo's face going sharp at the breakfast table meant the twin-bond had shifted and Jae-min had changed and Jae-min changing meant —

"He's not coming back." Ji-yoo declared, and the words came out certain, the twin who always knew, the twin who had believed Jae-min when no one else would. "Not yet. He found something. He's not leaving. He chose to stay."

"Chose to stay." Rico repeated, already standing, his chair scraping back, the uncle's body knowing before the uncle's mind that the niece's sharp face meant mobilization. "Ji-yoo. He said before dinner."

"He found something." Ji-yoo insisted, the dark eyes fierce, the twin reading the bond the way she read the bond — the way she had read it since the womb, the way she had read it across an ocean, the way she read it now, five hundred kilometers south, through the muffle of distance and snow and cold. "Something bad. Something that made him close the portal. Something that made him go in. Not come home. Go in."

"Go in where." Rico pressed, his dark eyes narrowing.

"The facility." Ji-yoo replied, her hand pressing flat against the table, the ramyeon broth pooling around her fingers. "The Mindanao facility. He's inside. He portaled inside. He —"

She stopped.

The bond spiked again — sharper, the particular sharp that meant the twin was in danger.

Not choosing danger anymore.

In danger.

The kind of danger that made the bond burn, the kind that meant the twin was cornered or fighting or surrounded.

"He's in trouble." Ji-yoo announced, and the words came out flat, the Preta captain's voice, the voice that had commanded the Hungry Ghosts, the voice that crossed oceans. "He's inside the facility and he's in trouble and he needs us. Now."

"Mei." Rico commanded, his voice shifting to the wall commander's register. "ARTEMIS. Jae-min's position. Now."

"Pulling." Mei confirmed, already at the comms, the wheelchair turning, her violet-blue eyes on the twelve-monitor hub, Chocho leaping from her lap as the divine fundamental's hands flew across the keyboard. "ARTEMIS, Mindanao sweep. Jae-min's void signature. Last portal departure — 10:47, courtyard. Last ARTEMIS ping — 11:02, ridge, central Mindanao."

Mei's fingers tightened on the keyboard.

"Then the void signature moved." Mei continued, her voice dropping. "At 11:08. Moved from the ridge to — inside the facility. He portaled into the facility. The void signature is now inside the alloy walls."

"He went in. He went inside. The void captain went inside a Federation facility alone. File it. His heartbeat — I can't track his heartbeat through ARTEMIS. Only the void signature. The void signature is inside. He's inside. Alone." Mei panicked, her fingers stuttering on the keys for half a heartbeat before recovering, the architect's precision overriding the obsession's terror.

"And there are other signatures converging on his position." Mei pressed, pulling up the thermal overlay. "Enhanced signatures. Fast movers. Ten — twenty — thirty — converging. He's been detected."

"Detected." Rico confirmed, his jaw setting. "Inside the facility."

"Inside the facility." Mei confirmed, her voice clinical now, the divine fundamental processing data the way she processed orbital calcs. "Thirty Enhanced signatures converging. And the facility itself — twelve thousand Enhanced signatures inside the walls. Not soldiers. Not the perimeter garrison. Twelve thousand additional signatures, in structures. Laboratories."

"Production line." Ji-yoo declared, the twin's voice cold, the twin who had been filing the Federation since Day 64, the twin who had seen the Pasig facility. "They're making Enhanced. The Federation is manufacturing Enhanced in Mindanao. The way Pasig manufactured them. Except Pasig was a hundred and four students. Mindanao is twelve thousand."

"Twelve thousand." Rico repeated, his fists clenching. "Manufactured Enhanced."

"And Jae-min is inside." Ji-yoo pressed, her dark eyes burning. "With thirty Enhanced converging and twelve thousand more in the labs. He went in because —"

She stopped.

The bond.

The twin reading the bond.

The twin feeling what the twin felt — the thing that had made Jae-min close the portal home and open a portal into the facility instead.

"Children." Ji-yoo whispered, her voice cracking. "He found children. The facility has children. They're experimenting on children. And Jae-min —"

"Jae-min went in for the children." Rico concluded, his voice flat, the uncle who understood that Jae-min going in for children meant Jae-min was not coming out without children. "We go. Now."

"Now." Ji-yoo confirmed, standing, the ramyeon broth dripping from her fingers.

"Yi Chen." Rico commanded. "Portal. Yi Chen can portal a team to the facility."

"Yi Chen." Mei confirmed, paging the heir through the comms. "Command Deck. Now."

"The frames." Mark Jordan declared from his seat, the amber eyes blazing, the engineer already calculating trajectories. "The frames can reach Mindanao. One hour. Five frames. Four pilots. GENESIS empty for extraction. We fly cover. We extract Jae-min and whatever he found."

"Five frames." Rico confirmed, turning to Mark Jordan. "SAMURAI — you. SPECTER — the woman in white. REAPER — Gabby. ASSASSIN — Yue. Four frames. GENESIS empty. Launch when Yi Chen portals."

"I'm going." Ji-yoo announced, and the dark eyes were the Del Rosario eyes, the eyes that did not waver, one hundred and sixty-one days pregnant and standing in the Atrium with ramyeon broth on her fingers and the twin-bond burning in her chest. "The bond is the compass. I'm the only one who can find him inside. I go."

"Ji-yoo —" Min-joo started, stepping forward from the doorway.

"I'm going." Ji-yoo repeated, her dark eyes finding Min-joo's, the partner's eyes meeting. "The baby is one hundred and sixty-one days from birth. The baby is safe. The baby wants the father of the baby to be alive. The baby wants the uncle. The baby is a Del Rosario. Del Rosarios go."

"I'm coming with you." Min-joo declared, the shadow user, the partner, his hand finding hers. "Shadow link. I stay in your shadow. I protect you. The baby. Both."

"Both." Ji-yoo confirmed, squeezing his hand.

"Yue." Rico commanded.

"I go." Yue confirmed from the wall, the marble eyes calm, the jian on her hip. "The ASSASSIN. If the spatial abilities are blocked — the jian is steel. The jian works."

"Four." Rico counted. "Ji-yoo. Min-joo. Yi Chen. Yue. Yi Chen portals you in. The bond finds Jae-min. The frames fly cover. Two exit strategies — gold portal and frames."

"Two exit strategies." Ji-yoo confirmed. "Yi Chen. Portal. Now."

The heir arrived, the golden eyes blazing, the gold portal already forming at his fingertips, the spatial awareness extending, reaching, locking onto the ARTEMIS coordinates.

"I can lock the facility." Yi Chen declared, the gold spinning. "ARTEMIS imagery. The spatial awareness. I can portal a team inside the walls."

"Inside the walls." Rico confirmed. "Near Jae-min's last known position."

"Near." Yi Chen confirmed. "The portal is spatial. If the facility has spatial-detection Enhanced — the portal might be detected. But I can get us in."

"Get us in." Ji-yoo commanded, her voice the Preta captain's voice. "Now."

The gold portal tore open in the Atrium — gold, the color of the heir's power, the door to Mindanao, the door to the facility, the door to the twin.

Ji-yoo looked at the portal.

The golden portal.

The south.

The twin.

"Oppa." Ji-yoo whispered, her hand tightening at her side. "I'm coming."

She stepped through.

Min-joo shadowed.

Yue stepped through.

Yi Chen stepped through last, the gold portal closing behind them, the Atrium empty, the frames launching in the courtyard below, and the war — the long war, the Mindanao war — had just become a rescue.

— • • • —

Day 410. 11:20 hours.

Mindanao.

The facility.

Inside.

The gold portal opened in a corridor — industrial, concrete, the alloy walls visible beneath the paint, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, the air warm and heated.

Ji-yoo stepped through and the twin-bond slammed into her — full, close, the twin was near, the twin was below, one floor below, the bond pointing down like a compass needle finding north.

"This way." Ji-yoo commanded, the dark eyes shifting to the Preta captain's eyes, the eyes that hunted. "Down. One floor. He's —"

The corridor exploded.

Not literally — the Enhanced signatures that ARTEMIS had tracked converging on Jae-min's position poured into the corridor from both ends.

Thirty of them, the fast movers, the response team, the Enhanced patrol sent to find the void captain and finding the gold portal instead.

Thirty Enhanced, in the corridor, between the team and Jae-min.

"Thirty." Yue assessed, the marble eyes already moving, the jian already drawn, the swordswoman reading the corridor the way she read every space — angles, distances, escape routes, kill zones. "Fifteen north. Fifteen south. We're between."

"Between." Min-joo confirmed, his hand finding Ji-yoo's arm, the shadow link engaging, the shadow spreading across the floor like ink. "Ji-yoo. Stay in my shadow."

"Yi Chen." Ji-yoo commanded, the Preta captain's voice. "Portal. Down. Now. One floor. Jae-min is below. Portal us through the floor."

"The floor." Yi Chen confirmed, the golden eyes blazing, the gold portal forming — not horizontal, vertical, under their feet, a gold door in the concrete. "Through. Now."

The thirty Enhanced charged.

Yue moved — not Blink, not teleportation, but the raw speed and silence of the swordswoman who appeared and struck and vanished between blinks, the marble eyes tracking fifteen targets in the northern corridor, the jian flashing in a sequence so fast the steel screamed, finding the tendons behind the knees, the nerve clusters beneath the arms, fifteen down in the time it took the southern fifteen to take three steps.

The marble eyes calm.

The jian bloody.

The swordswoman doing what the swordswoman did.

"Through." Yue commanded, already back, already at the gold portal, the jian sheathed in a single motion. "Now."

Ji-yoo jumped.

Min-joo shadowed.

Yue followed.

Yi Chen dropped through last, the gold portal closing above them, the thirty Enhanced left in the corridor above — fifteen disabled, fifteen charging into empty air where the portal had been.

The floor below.

The labs.

Ji-yoo landed and the twin-bond — full, close, three meters. The twin was here. In the lab. In the room. And the room was —

Jae-min stood in the center of the laboratory, his back to the team, his void open — a portal, black-violet, tearing in the air beside him, and through the portal — children.

Dozens of children.

Streaming through the portal, one after another, the children from the tables, the children from the labs, the children who had been lying on the tables being pushed through the Threshold, now on their feet, now running, now pouring through the void portal into Olympus.

Jae-min had opened a portal to Olympus.

He was extracting the children. One by one. Through the void. To the compound. To the wall. To the home.

"Oppa." Ji-yoo breathed, and the word was the word that meant found you, the word that meant here, the word that meant the twin was alive and the twin was working and the twin was saving children.

Jae-min turned.

The dark eyes — not silver, not entity, just Jae-min, the void captain, the father, the man who had found children on tables and could not leave them.

The eyes were wet.

The eyes were fierce.

"Ji-yoo." Jae-min acknowledged, his voice the captain's voice. "There are more. Hundreds. Thousands. The labs go on. I've extracted forty-seven children. Through the portal. To Olympus. But there are hundreds more. Thousands more."

Jae-min's dark eyes swept the lab, the void still open, the children still streaming.

"The production line goes on." Jae-min pressed, his voice tightening. "Lab after lab. Row after row. Children on tables. Baseline children being converted. I can't leave them."

"You can't leave them." Ji-yoo confirmed, the twin's voice matching his. "How many."

"I don't know." Jae-min replied, turning back to the portal. "Hundreds in this section. Thousands in the facility. The production line is industrial. The Federation is manufacturing Enhanced children at scale. The children are the raw material."

The lab doors burst open.

Not from the corridor above — from the labs beyond, the deeper labs, the production line.

Fifty Enhanced poured through the lab doors — not soldiers, not patrol, products, the manufactured Enhanced, the ones who had already been through the Threshold, the ones who were already converted, the facility's output.

Fifty manufactured Enhanced moving fast, moving coordinated, moving like soldiers because they had been manufactured to be soldiers.

"Fifty." Yue assessed, the marble eyes on the doors, the jian drawn.

"More coming." Jae-min warned, the void still open, the children still streaming — fifty, fifty-one, fifty-two, the extraction continuing even as the fifty converged. "The detection Enhanced in the tower is directing them. He knows where I am. He's sending everything. I have minutes. The portal is stable but I can't hold it and fight."

"I'll hold." Yue declared, the marble eyes already moving, the jian already flashing, the swordswoman stepping between the team and the fifty. "Get the children. I hold."

"Yue —" Jae-min started.

"I hold." Yue repeated, and the marble eyes were calm, the eyes that did not waver, the eyes of a woman who had decided. "Go. The children. Go."

Jae-min turned back to the portal.

The children streamed.

The void held.

Ji-yoo was beside him, the twin-bond full, the twin helping, the twin guiding the children, the twin who had come to find him and was now helping him save children.

"She came. The twin came. The bond brought her. Five hundred kilometers, pregnant, and she came." Jae-min realized, his dark eyes flickering to Ji-yoo for half a heartbeat before returning to the portal, the children running, the void holding. "Of course she came. She always comes. The twin always comes."

"Min-joo." Ji-yoo commanded, guiding a child through the void portal. "Shadow the doors. With Yue. Hold the line."

"Holding." Min-joo confirmed, the shadow user melting into the shadow, the Asura Hell Katana drawn, the shadow spreading across the lab floor like ink, the partner joining the swordswoman at the door.

"Yi Chen." Jae-min pressed. "Gold portal. To Olympus. Side by side with my void. Two portals. Double the extraction rate."

"Twice as fast." Yi Chen confirmed, the gold portal tearing open beside the void — gold and black-violet, side by side, two doors to Olympus, two doors to home, and the children streamed through both.

Sixty, seventy, eighty, the extraction accelerating, the children running, the children who had been on tables now running through doors in the air to a compound they had never seen, to a wall they had never known, to a home that was not their home yet but would be.

The fifty Enhanced hit Yue and Min-joo at the door.

The jian flashed.

The shadow struck.

The first ten went down — disabled, not killed, the disabling strikes, the tendon cuts, the nerve clusters.

But the fifty kept coming.

And behind the fifty — a hundred more.

The production line's output, the manufactured Enhanced, pouring from the deeper labs, the facility waking up, the twelve thousand signatures that ARTEMIS had counted now moving, now converging.

"A hundred more." Yue reported, the marble eyes still calm, the jian still flashing, but the voice carried the weight. "Jae-min. How long."

"Minutes." Jae-min replied, the void and the gold portal both open, the children streaming, ninety, ninety-five, a hundred. "A hundred children through. Hundreds more in the labs."

The facility's alarm went off.

Not a sound — a gamma pulse that rippled through the facility, through the walls, through the labs, through the Enhanced.

A pulse that was the detection Enhanced in the tower broadcasting to every manufactured soldier in the facility: intruders. The void captain. The gold portal. The extraction. Stop them.

The twelve thousand stirred.

Ji-yoo felt it through the bond.

Jae-min felt it through the void.

The twelve thousand signatures, the manufactured Enhanced, the army that did not need the cage — all of them, every one, turning toward the lab.

Toward the portals. Toward the children. Toward the team.

"Jae-min." Ji-yoo warned, her dark eyes finding his. "The frames."

"The frames." Jae-min confirmed, his hand going to the comms. "Mark Jordan. Now. The facility. The labs. We have a hundred children extracted. Hundreds more. Thousands more. And twelve thousand Enhanced waking up."

The wall exploded.

Not the lab wall — the facility wall.

The alloy wall, the cage's bones, the Chen Family's alloy, the wall that was supposed to be impenetrable — the wall exploded inward, and through the explosion, through the smoke and the snow and the minus-seventy air that poured into the heated facility, through the hole in the alloy wall — a frame.

Ten feet tall.

Black and red.

The copy of Ifrit's Hell Katana igniting, the Black Hell Flame venting from the shoulders, the ionic plasma thrusters blazing red-white.

SAMURAI.

Mark Jordan.

The engineer who had built the frames flying through the hole he had just cut in the alloy wall with the Black Hell Flame, the wall that was supposed to be impenetrable, the wall that was not impenetrable to a HERACLES Frame.

"Did someone order a door?" Mark Jordan crackled through the comms, the amber eyes behind the visor, the engineer who was also a pilot and who was also, apparently, a comedian. "Because I made a door."

Behind SAMURAI — SPECTER.

The white frame, the dual katanas drawn, the woman in white moving through the breach with the silent, ghostlike speed that the SPECTER was built for, the regeneration humming, the green eyes behind the visor scanning the facility.

"He's here. He's inside. The children — he's saving children. The way he saves everything. The way he saves everyone." The woman in white trembled behind her visor, her hands steady on the SPECTER's grips while something beneath her ribs cracked and bled in that quiet, secret way it always did when she watched him be everything she wanted and could never ask for. "Focus. The children. The frames. The fists. You are the specter. The specter does not want. The specter strikes."

Behind SPECTER — REAPER.

Gabby's frame, black and silver, the rifle-scythe on the frame's back, the gravity humming.

And behind REAPER — ASSASSIN, Yue's frame, the bike seat empty, waiting for the swordswoman to mount.

"He's extracting children. Through the void. Children on tables. He found children on tables and he couldn't leave them. Of course he couldn't leave them. He never leaves anyone." Gabby catalogued from the REAPER cockpit, her dark eyes wide behind the visor, the heat climbing her neck even in the middle of a combat zone because Jae-min was there, Jae-min was alive, Jae-min was saving children and the crush that had been filed and exposed was still a crush, still alive, still sending blood to her face in that traitorous way. "Focus. The frames. The children. File it later. Fight now."

"Four frames." Mark Jordan confirmed through the comms. "GENESIS is empty — in Olympus, for Jae-min extraction. Four frames inside the facility. The wall is breached. The labs are —"

He paused.

The amber eyes scanning.

"The labs are full of children." Mark Jordan realized, his voice shifting.

"The labs are full of children." Jae-min confirmed through the comms. "I'm extracting. The void and the gold portal are open. Children are going through to Olympus. But the twelve thousand are waking up. We need cover."

"Cover." Mark Jordan confirmed. "SAMURAI — holding the breach. SPECTER — lab section one. REAPER — lab section two. ASSASSIN — Yue, mount up."

"ASSASSIN — Yue, mount up." Mark Jordan repeated. "The twelve thousand are coming. We hold the line. Jae-min extracts. The children go through."

"The children go through." The comms echoed.

Yue was already moving — the marble eyes, the jian, the swordswoman who had been holding the door with Min-joo now turning, now running, now moving with the silent speed that was hers, reaching the ASSASSIN in seconds.

The bike seat.

The hand-grips.

The biometric token inserted.

The harmonic synchronized.

The PROMETHEUS core igniting blue-white.

The ionic plasma thrusters blazing.

The jian mounted on the frame's hip.

The woman and the frame became one.

The twelve thousand came.

The first wave — two hundred, the closest, the fastest, the manufactured Enhanced from the nearest labs — poured into the corridor.

The SAMURAI met them at the breach.

The Black Hell Flame erupted — the jet-black fire that absorbed light and burned at five thousand five hundred degrees, the Ifrit's Hell Katana screaming through the air, the disabling strikes finding Enhanced bodies, not killing, disarming, disabling, the way the frames always worked.

Precision, not slaughter.

The Olympus way.

But two hundred became five hundred.

And five hundred became a thousand.

And the thousand kept coming, the production line's output, the manufactured army, the twelve thousand that ARTEMIS had counted now converging on the breach, on the labs, on the portals, on the children.

The four frames held the line.

The void and the gold portal stayed open.

The children streamed through — a hundred and fifty, two hundred, two hundred and fifty — and the battle for the children of Mindanao had begun.

Jae-min's void held.

Yi Chen's golden portal held.

The children ran.

The frames fought.

And the twin-bond hummed — warm, fierce, full — the bond that had survived everything, the bond that was the first thing and the last thing.

"Oppa." Ji-yoo called, beside him, the twin helping the children through, the dark eyes on the portals, on the frames, on the twelve thousand coming. "How many."

"Thousands." Jae-min replied, his voice tight. "The production line goes on. Block after block. Lab after lab. We extract what we can. We hold the line. We —"

The detection Enhanced pulsed again.

The gamma broadcast.

And the facility — the entire facility, all twelve thousand, the full manufactured army — turned.

Toward the breach. Toward the portals. Toward the children.

Toward the frames. Toward the team.

All twelve thousand. Coming.

At once.

The void flickered.

The golden portal flickered.

The detection Enhanced — the one in the tower, the spatial-detection Enhanced — pulsed again, harder, and the portals wavered, the spatial disruption interfering, the doors to Olympus destabilizing.

"Yi Chen." Jae-min pressed, his voice dropping. "The portals."

"The detection Enhanced." Yi Chen warned, the golden eyes wide. "He's blocking us. Not fully — but enough. If he keeps pulsing — the portals close. The children stop. We're —"

"Cut off." Jae-min finished.

The twelve thousand charged.

And the void —
