Chapter 325 - The Mountain

Day 391. 04:30 hours.

The highway. Two point five kilometers south of the wall. Behind the garrison, behind the four hundred, behind the war.

The snow fell between them.

Jae-min in the GENESIS, hovering twenty meters above the frozen highway, the black-and-gold frame's particle cannon tracking the woman below.

And the commander standing on the road in the dark, her gray hair dusted with snow, her dark eyes looking up at the frame with the calm of someone who had been waiting for this moment longer than the march itself.

"I am the mountain." She had declared. "And the mountain has come."

Jae-min did not fire the particle cannon.

The void hummed inside the frame, amplified to ten kilometers, reading the woman's signature with a clarity that was almost painful.

The gamma radiated from her body like heat from a furnace.

Dark, heavy, dense, the kind of power that felt like it had been growing in the earth for centuries.

Not thermal, not spatial, not gravitational, not force. Something else. Something the void recognized but could not name, because the void had never felt anything like it.

She knew his name. She had expected him. She had planned for this.

"Who are you?" Jae-min demanded through the frame's external speakers, his voice carrying across the frozen highway.

The captain's voice that did not waver even when the void was screaming that this signature was stronger than anything he had faced.

Stronger than Wei Chen's gravity. Stronger than Ling Chen's force. Stronger than the sound user who had torn Yue's arm open.

The woman did not answer immediately.

She stood on the highway, in the snow, in the dark, looking up at the GENESIS with the patience of stone.

The snow landed on her shoulders and did not melt. Not because of the cold, but because the gamma radiating from her body was not thermal.

It was dense.

The snow landed and stayed, accumulating, because her body was not warm. Her body was heavy. Dense. Like the earth itself. Like the mountain she claimed to be.

"My name is Magdalena." The woman answered, her voice carrying across the frozen highway with the weight of someone who had spent a long time alone in the mountains with three thousand people who depended on her. "Magdalena Aguilar. I brought three thousand people from Baguio. I brought them south. And I knew, before I marched, that you would come to me. That you would make a door in the air and appear behind my people, alone, in your machine. Because that is what you do. That is who you are."

"You planned for this." Jae-min stated, not a question.

"I planned for everything I could see." Magdalena confirmed. "I sent my watchers to your walls. For three weeks. They sat on the ridgelines with binoculars, and they watched. They watched your wall. Your mansions. Your hospital. They watched your metal warriors in the courtyard. The ones that fly. The ones that change shape. They watched your people eat together at a long table. They watched children being carried. They watched smoke from your kitchens. They watched the warmth rising from your corridors. And they came back to me, and they said, Magdalena, that place has children. That place has food. That place has warmth. That place lives."

"Her watchers. Mountain people with binoculars. On the ridgelines. For three weeks. They saw the frames. The wall. The children. The kitchens. The heated corridor. They described what they saw in plain language. She pieced it together. She did not have intelligence. She had observers." Jae-min calculated, the thought cold and sharp.

"You scouted us." Jae-min measured.

"I watched you." Magdalena corrected, her voice carrying no apology. "I watched you because I needed to know what Olympus is. And I have seen. Your metal warriors that fly and change shape and burn with fire that swallows light. Your door in the air. You, hovering above everything, seeing everything. I have seen what Olympus is."

"And you marched three thousand soldiers against us anyway." Jae-min pressed.

"I marched because the Federation fell." Magdalena answered, her voice carrying the weight of someone who had made a decision and would not unmake it. "The ones from the island failed. The cage is dying. The world opened up. And in the open, the strong take. That is the way. Before the burning sky. After the burning sky. The strong take. The weak follow. Or die."

"Olympus is not weak." Jae-min countered.

"Olympus is the strongest place I have seen." Magdalena agreed. "I watched you hold the seven from the island. I watched your metal warriors rise and burn and cut. I watched you put something in the sky with a door in the air. And I felt it. Something heavy. Above the clouds. Metal. Sitting in the sky. I do not know what it is. But I feel it. The earth feels everything that touches the ground, Captain. And what sits above the clouds touches the ground through its weight. I feel it. Charged. Waiting."

"She feels ARTEMIS. Through the earth. The High-Elemental of earth feeling the weight of metal in orbit. She does not know what it is. She does not know it is a weapon. She feels its weight. Through the ground. Through the earth she is. The sensitivity of the mountain. The earth feels what touches it. Even from orbit." Jae-min realized, the thought cold and awed.

"And I was afraid." Magdalena continued. "And I was certain. That I had to come. Now. While the island people are dying. While the world is open. Because if I did not come now, someone else would. Someone worse. Someone who would not stand on a frozen road and talk."

"Talk." Jae-min repeated. The word that changed everything.

"Talk." Magdalena confirmed. "The ones I sent against your wall. The strong ones. The ones who burn. The ones who shape the ground. The soldiers with rifles. I sent them not to break your wall. I knew they could not break your wall. I sent them to see. To see your metal warriors. To see your door in the air. To see what Olympus is. So I could decide."

"Decide what." Jae-min pressed.

"Decide whether to fight or to talk." Magdalena answered. "And I have decided. To talk. Because fighting you would kill my people. All of them. In your wall. In your metal warriors. In the heavy thing that sits above the clouds. I would lose. Not because you are stronger than me. You are not. But because you have the machine. And the door. And the heavy thing in the sky. And the things I cannot match. I would lose. And my people would die. And I did not bring three thousand people three hundred kilometers to kill them. I brought them south to save them."

"You came to talk." Jae-min measured. "Not to fight."

"I came to talk." Magdalena confirmed. "The attack was a test. I needed you to see my people. To commit your metal warriors. To leave your wall. And to come to me. Alone. Through the door in the air. Because this conversation, between you and me, between the one who makes doors and the mountain, cannot happen on the wall. Cannot happen in front of your people. This conversation needs to be alone."

"Alone." Jae-min repeated. The void captain, in the GENESIS, on the frozen highway, facing the High-Elemental of earth. Alone. As she had planned.

"She planned this. The entire attack. The brutes. The fire. The earth. The conventional. All of it. A test. A demonstration. To draw the frames out. To draw me out. Through the portal. Behind her lines. Alone. She planned the whole thing. The commander who waited. Who came last. Who knew I would come." Jae-min realized, the thought cold and certain.

"I am not your enemy." Magdalena declared. The words that changed everything. Again. "I marched south. I attacked your wall. I sent my people to die, testing you. And I am sorry. For the dead. For the ones who burned under your black fire. For the ones who fell. For the ones who were cut. They were mine. They followed me. And I sent them to die because I needed to know. What Olympus is. And now I know."

She paused. The snow fell. The highway was dark. The war raged north, behind them, but here, on the highway, two people faced each other in the dark, and the war was secondary.

"I am not your enemy." Magdalena repeated. "I am the mountain. And the mountain does not want to fight the one who makes doors in the air. The mountain wants to join it."

"Join." Jae-min measured. The word he had not expected.

"I have three thousand people." Magdalena said, her voice shifting from commander to something else. Something softer. Something that sounded like a woman who had kept three thousand people alive for three hundred and ninety days and was tired. "Survivors. Families. Old people. Young people. People who followed me south because the mountain protected them. In the caves. In the geothermal vents. I kept them alive. For three hundred and ninety days. Since the sky burned."

"Since the sky burned." Jae-min repeated. The freeze. Day 1. The Alpha Centauri gamma wave. She was saying she had kept them alive since the freeze.

"Since the sky burned." Magdalena confirmed. "The sky burned. And the world died. And the mountain took us in. The caves. The vents. The heat from the earth. I am the earth, Captain. The earth kept us warm when the sky killed everything else. Three thousand people. In the mountain. Alive. Because the mountain would not let them die."

"And you brought them south." Jae-min pressed. "Not to conquer."

"Not to conquer." Magdalena confirmed. "To find. A home. A wall. A place where three thousand people can live. Not survive. Live. The mountain heard. That Olympus holds. That Olympus has food. That Olympus has a place where people get better. That Olympus has children being born. Growing. And the mountain said, that is where we go. That is where we take our people. To the place that holds. To the place that lives."

"And the four hundred." Jae-min said. "The ones you held back. The ones who never engaged."

"They are not fighters." Magdalena answered, her voice carrying the weight of someone defending her people. "They are farmers. Builders. Healers. Teachers. People who changed when the sky burned. People who became different. I trained them to defend the community. But they are not warriors. Not like your metal warriors. Not like the ones who cut and burn and reap. The four hundred are my people. And I would not send them to die against your machines. So I held them. And I sent the hundred. The ones who volunteered. To see. What Olympus is. So I could decide."

"And you decided to talk." Jae-min measured.

"I decided to talk." Magdalena confirmed. "Because fighting you would kill my people. All of them. And I did not bring them three hundred kilometers to kill them. I brought them to save them."

The void hummed. The void could not detect lies.

That was Jennifer's Omni-Mind, not the void. But the void could read signatures, could read the body, could read the gamma fluctuations that accompanied emotion.

And Magdalena's gamma was steady. Calm. Honest. The gamma of someone who was telling the truth.

[LINDA comms]: "She's telling the truth." Mei's voice came through the comms, barely, the signal weak at this distance. The divine fundamental on the command deck, monitoring through ARTEMIS. "I'm reading her through the ARTEMIS feed. The gamma fluctuations are consistent with truth-telling. No deception signature. She means it."

[GENESIS comms]: "Mei. The mind scan. Can you reach." Jae-min pressed.

[LINDA comms]: "Negative." Mei answered. "Two point five kilometers. My range is thirty meters. I can read through ARTEMIS passively. But the active scan cannot reach."

[GENESIS comms]: "Passive confirms." Jae-min acknowledged. The passive read confirmed truth. But the active scan could not reach. Not at this distance.

"The four hundred." Jae-min addressed Magdalena. "You held them back. Not to release them. To keep them safe. To keep them out of the fight."

"The four hundred are my people." Magdalena confirmed. "Not warriors. Farmers who can grow things faster. Builders who can shape things with their hands. Healers who can help the sick. People who became different when the sky burned. People I trained to defend. But not to fight. Not like your machines."

"And the three thousand." Jae-min continued. "The soldiers who fired at my wall. The ones who attacked my volunteers."

"Refugees." Magdalena corrected, her voice heavy. "They were soldiers before the sky burned. Army. Military. But most of them are people who picked up rifles because the world ended and survival demanded it. Farmers. Fishermen. Office workers. Students. People who became soldiers because the sky burned and the cold came, and there was no other choice. They do not want to fight, Captain. They want to live. Behind a wall. With food. With warmth. With the children."

"The children." Magdalena repeated. Her dark eyes were wet. The High-Elemental of earth, the mountain, the woman who had kept three thousand people alive, her eyes were wet. "I have none. In Baguio. Three thousand people. And no children. The cold took them. The hunger took them. We could not keep them alive. In the mountain. Three thousand survivors. And not one child. Not one baby. Not one future."

Her voice broke. The mountain. The earth. The woman who had kept three thousand people alive could not keep the children alive. And the children were the future. The reason. The everything.

"That is why I marched south." Magdalena declared, her voice raw, the tears freezing on her cheeks. "Not to conquer. Not to take. To find the children. The place that keeps children alive. The place that grows. Olympus. The place with ten children. The place with the wall and the metal warriors and the one who makes doors in the air. The place that lives while the rest of the world dies."

"She has no children. Three thousand people. No children. The cold took them. The hunger took them. The mountain could not keep them alive. And she marched three hundred kilometers to find the place that keeps children alive. Olympus. The place with ten children behind the wall. She came for the children. The mountain came for the children. The — reason. The same reason. The same word. The children." Jae-min realized, the thought fierce and aching and absolutely certain.

[GENESIS comms]: "Mei. ARTEMIS. Any movement from the four hundred." Jae-min commanded.

[LINDA comms]: "Negative." Mei reported. "The four hundred holding. Not engaging. Waiting."

[GENESIS comms]: "Uncle. The wall. Status." Jae-min pressed.

[FORWARD comms]: "Holding." Rico reported. "The conventional breaking. Leaderless. The frames devastating. The Enhanced nearly eliminated. The wall intact. No breaches. Jae-min, the commander. Did you engage."

[GENESIS comms]: "I engaged." Jae-min answered. "We're talking."

Silence on the comms. Then:

[FORWARD comms]: "Talking." Rico repeated. "With the commander. Who marched three thousand soldiers against our wall."

[GENESIS comms]: "Talking." Jae-min confirmed. "The commander wants to join. Olympus. Three thousand refugees. Five hundred of the changed ones. The High-Elemental of earth. They want to join."

Silence.

[FORWARD comms]: "Join." Rico measured. The word that changed everything.

[GENESIS comms]: "Join." Jae-min confirmed.

[FORWARD comms]: "Then Olympus grows." Rico declared. "Again. By three thousand. By five hundred. By the mountain."

[GENESIS comms]: "Olympus grows." Jae-min confirmed.

[GENESIS comms]: "Magdalena." Jae-min addressed, his voice shifting. Not the captain. The man. "The mountain. The High-Elemental of Earth. You want to join Olympus. Three thousand refugees. Five hundred of the changed ones. The four hundred as citizens, not soldiers. The three thousand as refugees, not conquerors. And the mountain builds. Shapes stone. Taps geothermal vents. Moves earth. Builds foundations. Expands the compound from seven mansions to a city. For the children. For the ten. For the three thousand. For the future."

"The future." Magdalena confirmed.

[GENESIS comms]: "Then call off your people." Jae-min ordered. "The soldiers, retreating. The four hundred, standing down. The war, over. Today. Now. On this highway. Between the one who makes doors and the mountain. The war, over."

"The war, over." Magdalena declared. The words that a commander spoke to end a conflict. The words that saved three thousand lives. And Olympus's. And the ten children behind the wall.

She raised her hand.

The earth responded.

The ground beneath her feet trembled, and the tremor traveled outward through the bedrock like a heartbeat through a body, spreading south through the frozen earth toward the garrison, toward the four hundred, toward the conventional soldiers, toward the brutes and the fire users and the earth users.

The signal was not violent. Not forceful.

It was the mountain speaking through the earth itself, sending one word through the rock and the soil and the frozen ground to every person who stood on the earth that she was.

The signal was simple. One word. Spoken through the earth.

Stop.

The garrison stopped. The conventional stopped retreating, stopped firing, stopped dying. The four hundred stopped holding, stopped waiting, stopped preparing. The brutes stopped fighting. The fire users stopped burning.

The earth users stopped shaping.

The entire garrison, three thousand soldiers and five hundred of the changed ones, stopped simultaneously, as if the ground itself had reached up and held their feet in place. Because it had. The mountain was the earth, and the earth obeyed the mountain, and the mountain said stop.

And they stopped. All of them. At once. The firing ceased. The fighting ceased. The dying ceased. The war ceased.

On a frozen highway, in the dark, in the snow, because the mountain said one word through the earth itself and three thousand five hundred people obeyed.

"The war is over." Magdalena announced, lowering her hand, the earth settling, the trembling ceasing. "My people stand down. All of them. Because the mountain said stop."

[GENESIS comms]: "Mei. ARTEMIS. Stand down." Jae-min ordered.

[LINDA comms]: "ARTEMIS standing down." Mei confirmed. "The garrison is standing down. All signatures de-escalating. The four hundred not engaging. The war, over. ARTEMIS standing down. The heavy thing in the sky, de-charged. The last resort, not needed."

[GENESIS comms]: "Mark Jordan. Frames. Stand down. Return to base." Jae-min commanded.

[SAMURAI comms]: "Copy." Mark Jordan confirmed. "Frames standing down. Returning."

[GENESIS comms]: "Anna. The wall. Stand down." Jae-min continued.

[WALL comms]: "Copy." Anna confirmed. "The wall standing down. The volunteers standing down. The war, over."

[GENESIS comms]: "Uncle. The 9th Infantry. Stand down." Jae-min finished.

[FORWARD comms]: "Copy." Rico confirmed. "9th Infantry standing down. The forward line standing down. The war, over. The Del Rosario holds. Without firing the last shot. Because the captain talked."

[GENESIS comms]: "Talked." Jae-min confirmed.

Jae-min opened the GENESIS cockpit. The chest plate splitting, the gauntlets releasing, the HUD fading. The captain, out. Standing on the frame's shoulder. In the snow. In the dark.

On the frozen highway. Looking down at the High-Elemental of earth who had come to fight and found a home.

"Magdalena." Jae-min called, his voice carrying across the frozen highway. "The mountain. Welcome to Olympus."

He extended his hand. From the frame's shoulder. Ten meters up. The hand that held the void. The hand that had bestowed essences.

The hand that had punched Rose McDowell naked in the snow. The hand that offered.

Magdalena looked up at the hand. The dark eyes wet. The tears freezing on her cheeks.

The face of someone who had marched three thousand people three hundred kilometers south to find a wall they could live behind, and found it.

Found the one who makes doors offering his hand instead of his weapon. Found Olympus.

She raised her hand. The earth trembled. A pillar of stone rose from the highway, lifting Magdalena up, up, to the frame's shoulder, to Jae-min's hand, to the offer.

The High-Elemental of earth, lifted by the earth itself, to meet the void captain's hand.

Their hands met. The void and the earth. The sky and the ground. The captain and the mountain.

"Welcome to Olympus." Jae-min repeated.

"Welcome home." Magdalena answered.

The snow fell. The highway was dark. The war was over. And Olympus grew. By three thousand. By five hundred. By the High-Elemental of earth. The mountain joined the void.

Day 391. 05:00 hours.

The compound.

The courtyard.

The frames returned.

Five HERACLES descending into the courtyard, the ionic plasma thrusters venting, the PROMETHEUS cores cooling.

The transformation from jet to knight, then the cockpit's opening, the pilots climbing out.

Mark Jordan stepped out of the SAMURAI, his amber eyes steady, the katana at his side cooling in the frozen air. The titanium copy of the Ifrit's Hell Katana, sized for the frame, the blade that had cut through the brutes with the Black Hell Flame.

The engineer who had built the frames and flown them and fought in them and now stood down. The Gundam otaku whose dream was real, whose frames were proven, whose war was over. Not through the last shot. Through words.

The woman in white climbed out of the SPECTER, silent as always, the twin katanas sheathed.

Her green eyes scanned the compound one last time.

The regeneration humming through her body, healing the burns the fire users had managed to inflict before her katanas found them.

She moved with the fast, fluid grace that was hers alone, just speed and regeneration and the silent, relentless movement that had made her the walking wall.

The sentinel.

The protector.

The woman who had held the east wall and then the sky. And now, in the courtyard, her green eyes found the south parapet.

The south field. The highway. The direction the captain had gone. The direction the captain still was.

"Jae-min is still on the highway. With the mountain. With the commander. The war is over. But the captain is still out there. Still alone. Jae-min said he was coming back. Jae-min keeps his promises. But the mountain is strong. And Jae-min is — alone." The woman in white registered, her green eyes steady on the south.

The woman who loved Jae-min deeply, who could not speak, who protected the wall because Jae-min asked, who would stand in the courtyard and wait.

Because Jae-min said he was coming back. And Jae-min kept his promises.

Gabby climbed out of the REAPER, the gravity settling in her body like a tide going out.

The titanium Rifle-Scythe folding into the frame's back, the weapon that gave the REAPER its name.

The proxy's first battle. Complete. She had fought in Ji-yoo's frame with Ji-yoo's power, the Ji-yoo style flowing through the REAPER, and Gabby had held. The proxy had held.

Yue climbed out of the ASSASSIN, the marble eyes calm, the jian at her hip cooling.

The titanium copy of her jian, sized for the frame, the blade that had cut the conventional command structure to pieces. The premier close-range assassin who had appeared and vanished and cut.

Calm. As always. As if the battle had been routine.

Rico stood on the parapet, the M4 in his hands, his superhuman body unmarked.

The uncle who had held the forward line and the wall.

The Del Rosario who held.

Anna stood beside him, the Right Hand who had commanded fifty-two civilians on a wall against three thousand.

The 9th Infantry, forty-three soldiers, broken in Bicol, rebuilt at Olympus, blooded on the wall, stood down.

Rifles lowered.

Breathing hard.

Some wounded.

None dead.

The volunteers, fifty-two civilians who had picked up rifles and defended their home, stood down. Hands shaking. Faces pale.

The adrenaline is crashing. They had held. Against three thousand. Against five hundred of the changed ones. Against the north. They had held.

And on the frozen highway, the captain stood on the GENESIS shoulder, his hand clasping Magdalena's hand.

The void and the earth.

The captain and the mountain.

Joined.

"The mountain joins Olympus." Jae-min declared, his voice carrying across the highway. "Three thousand refugees. Five hundred of the changed ones. The High-Elemental of Earth. They come not as conquerors. As builders. As citizens. As family."

"Family." Magdalena repeated, her dark eyes wet, her tears freezing, her voice carrying the weight of someone who had walked three hundred kilometers to find this. "Three thousand people. Looking for a home. And finding it."

"Uncle." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "The wall. The volunteers. The 9th Infantry. All stood down. The war is over. The garrison is standing down. The four hundred are not engaging. Because the mountain said stop."

[FORWARD comms]: "Copy." Rico confirmed. "The wall stood down. The 9th stood down. The volunteers stood down. The war is over. The captain talked. The Del Rosario holds."

"The Del Rosario holds." Jae-min confirmed. "And the mountain joins. The garrison, three thousand, will approach the wall. Not as attackers. As refugees. The mountain will lead them. They will approach slowly. Unarmed. Hands visible. The four hundred will stand down. The conventional will lower weapons. The mountain will bring them to the gate. And Olympus will open it."

"Open the gate." Rico measured, his voice rough. The uncle who understood. The Del Rosario who held. "Open the gate for three thousand refugees. The High-Elemental of Earth. The mountain. The joining."

"The gate opens." Jae-min confirmed. "For the mountain. For the three thousand. For the future."

The void hummed. The snow fell. And the mountain began to walk south. Toward the wall. Toward Olympus. Toward the gate.

Three thousand following.

Five hundred Enhanced among them. The garrison. Coming home.

Jae-min in the GENESIS rose from the highway. The portal opened beside the frame. The void tear connecting the frozen highway to the courtyard. The GENESIS stepped through.

The portal closed.

And Jae-min was home. In the courtyard. In the compound. Behind the wall. With his family. With his household. With the ten children. The reason. The everything.

The frame landed in the courtyard. The massive feet settling into the frozen ground. Snow drifting around the armor.

The cockpit opened.

The captain stepped out. Standing on the frozen ground. In the snow. In the dark. In the compound. Home.

The household watched. From the parapet, from the corridor, from the doorway. The household that had fought, that had held, that had won.

Not through force.

Through words. Through the captain who had portaled behind enemy lines and talked.

Rico was the first to reach him. The uncle. The Olympus Defense commander. The Del Rosario.

The man who had fired the first shot, ordered the retreat, held the wall, stood down, and trusted the impossible. The man who had heard one word.

Talking.

"Uncle." Jae-min murmured, his voice quiet. Not the captain. The nephew. The cousin. The man who had come back. "The war is over."

"The war is over." Rico confirmed, his rough voice heavy. The uncle who had fought. The uncle who had held. The uncle who understood. "The captain talked. The war is over. The Del Rosario holds."

"The Del Rosario holds." Jae-min confirmed. "And the mountain joins. Three thousand. Five hundred. The High-Elemental of earth. The joining."

"The joining." Rico measured. The uncle who understood. "Three thousand into Olympus. The expansion."

"The expansion." Jae-min confirmed. "The mountain builds. Shapes stone. Taps geothermal vents. Moves earth. The mountain expands Olympus from seven mansions to a city. For the children. For the ten. For the three thousand. For the future."

"The future." Rico echoed. The uncle. The Del Rosario. The man who had fought. The man who held. The man who understood. "The children. The ten. The reason."

"The reason." Jae-min confirmed. "The ten. And now three thousand more. To build. To protect. To live. For the children."

"The children." Rico confirmed. The uncle. The Del Rosario. The reason.

Jae-min looked at the compound. At the wall. At the parapet. At the volunteers standing down, hands still shaking. At the 9th Infantry, rifles lowered.

At Anna, the Right Hand. At the frames cooling in their berths. At the courtyard. At the hospital. At the corridor. At home.

And then the hospital. The door. The room. Hua. Eun-hae. The wife. The daughter. The family.

"Hua." Jae-min breathed, his voice quiet. The husband. Not the captain. "I need to see Hua."

"Go." Rico ordered, his voice rough. The uncle who understood. "Go to Hua. To Eun-hae. To the children. Go. The captain has earned the family."

"The family." Jae-min confirmed. The husband. The father. The man who had come back. The man who had talked. The man who had kept the promise.

Jae-min walked. Through the courtyard. Through the heated corridor. Through the hospital door. Through the corridor. To Hua's room. The door closed. The light off. The quiet.

Jae-min opened the door quietly.

The room was dark, snow falling against the window while the geothermal heat pulsed beneath the floor.

The bed.

Hua was sleeping with her crimson hair spread across the pillow, her violet-blue eyes closed. Eun-hae beside her.

Three days old. The tiny fist curled.

The daughter. The reason.

"I'm back." Jae-min whispered, his voice breaking. Not the captain. The husband. The father. The man who had come back. "I'm back, Hua. I'm back."

Hua's violet-blue eyes opened. The mother. The wife. The Enhanced. The woman who had died and returned. The promise. Kept.

"You're back." Hua whispered, her voice soft. The mother. The wife. The woman who had waited. "You're back."

"I'm back." Jae-min confirmed, his hand on her hair. The crimson. The tangled. The Hua. "I promised. I came back."

"You promised." Hua whispered, her fingers finding his. The grip gentle. The superhuman strength controlled. The mother who held without breaking. The instinct. "You came back."

"Eun-hae." Jae-min murmured, his dark eyes on the baby. On the daughter. On the tiny fist. On the dark eyes closed. On the face. His face. Hua's face. The combination. The reason. "Eun-hae. I'm back."

"You're back." Hua whispered, her violet-blue eyes wet. The tears not frozen. The mother. The wife. The woman who had died and returned. For this. For the moment. "You're back."

Jae-min lay down. Beside Hua. Beside Eun-hae. The captain. The husband. The father. The man who had fought. The man who had talked. The man who had come back. To the family. To the reason. To the everything.

"The war is over." Hua whispered, her violet-blue eyes on Jae-min. The mother. The wife. The woman who had waited. "The war is over."

"The war is over." Jae-min confirmed, his hand on her hair. The crimson. The Hua. "The mountain joins. Three thousand. The High-Elemental of earth. The joining."

"The mountain." Hua whispered, her violet-blue eyes closing. The sleep. The recovery. The peace. "The mountain joins."

"The mountain joins." Jae-min confirmed, his hand on her hair. The baby sleeping. The wife sleeping. The father watching. In the dark. In the quiet. In the peace.

The war was over. The mountain was joined. The captain was home. The children were sleeping. The ten. The reason. The everything.

And the mountain was coming. Three thousand. Walking north. Toward the wall. Toward the gate. Toward the home.

For the children. All of them. The ten behind the wall. And the three thousand coming. To build. To protect. To live.

Always. And forever.

The snow fell. The compound settled. The war was over. The peace was beginning. And Olympus grew. For the children. The ten. The three thousand. The everything.

And in the hospital, the captain slept. Beside his wife. Beside his daughter. The void quiet. The war over. The mountain coming. The children sleeping. The ten. The reason. The everything.
