Chapter 320 - The Second Child

Day 388. 04:00 hours.

The hospital.

Marie's former mansion.

The master suite — converted into the delivery room.

The contractions started at 02:00 hours. Hua woke Jae-min with a grip on his wrist that could have crushed steel—or at least it felt like it. The chef who had cooked for 388 days was done. The baby was coming. Eun-hae. The second child.

"GET ALESSIA." Hua roared, her violet-blue eyes blazing in the darkness, her crimson hair wild across the pillow. Her belly heavy and low. The contractions three minutes apart. "GET HER NOW. BEFORE I GET UP AND COOK SOMEONE."

Jae-min moved. The Void Captain. The man who had wielded two Fundamentals. Who had stopped time. Who had punched Rose McDowell naked in the snow. The man who could not handle this. The panic was real. The captain was gone. The husband remained. And he was panicking.

"Alessia." Jae-min strangled into the comms, his voice cracking. "Alessia. Now. The baby. Hua. Now."

Alessia was already moving. Her glow shifted to clinical white. Nearly six months pregnant with Jin, yet still mobile. Focused. Her belly heavy. Her steps steady. The doctor who had delivered Little Jae-min. The doctor who would deliver Eun-hae.

"Hua." Alessia addressed, entering the room, her voice clinical and steady. "Breathe. The contractions are three minutes apart. The baby is coming. Breathe."

"FUCK BREATHE." Hua screamed, her crimson hair wild, her violet-blue eyes blazing with a fury that could have melted the frost outside. "THIS HURTS. THIS HURTS LIKE—LIKE WORSE THAN THE TIME I BURNED THE LECHE FLAN. LIKE WORSE THAN THE TIME THE RICE STUCK TO THE POT. LIKE—AHHHHH."

The contraction peaked. Hua screamed—not a scream of fear, but a scream of fury. The chef furious at the pain. At the baby. At everything. The profanity. The woman who refused to lose.

"Jae-min." Hua snarled, her voice lethal. "If you don't hold my hand right now, I swear to God I will get up from this bed and I will—"

Jae-min took her hand. The hand that wielded the Void. The hand that held the rifle. The hand Hua crushed with a grip beyond anything the Void Captain had ever endured—including two Fundamentals and reversing his own collapsing Void Tear.

"YOU DID THIS TO ME." Hua roared, her fingers crushing his knuckles. "YOU. WITH YOUR VOID. AND YOUR—AHHHH—YOUR STUPID HANDSOME FACE. AND YOUR STUPID CAPTAIN'S VOICE. AND YOUR STUPID—AHHHHH."

"I'm here." Jae-min managed, his voice cracking. The panic. The husband. "I'm here, Hua. I'm—"

"YOU'RE USELESS." Hua fired back, her violet-blue eyes blazing. "YOU'RE STANDING THERE PANICKING LIKE A MAN WHO NEVER HELD A WEAPON. YOU FACED THE FEDERATION'S SEVEN. AND YOU CAN'T HOLD—AHHHH—YOUR WIFE'S HAND WITHOUT FLINCHING."

"She is crushing my hand. The hand that held the Void against Wei Chen and Ling Chen. The hand that punched Rose McDowell during stopped time. And Hua is crushing it. The chef. The wife. The woman who cooked for 388 days. My wife. And I am... flinching." Jae-min realized, the thought panicked and absurd and absolutely real.

"Push." Alessia ordered, her voice clinical. "Hua. Push. The baby is coming."

"PUSH." Hua repeated, her voice lethal. "YOU WANT ME TO PUSH. I'VE BEEN PUSHING FOR TWO HOURS. THIS BABY—AHHHH—THIS BABY IS STUCK. LIKE RICE STUCK TO THE POT. AND I'M GOING TO—AHHHHH."

"Language." Jae-min reminded, the husband who regretted it the instant the words left his mouth.

"LANGUAGE." Hua echoed, her violet-blue eyes blazing. "YOU WANT LANGUAGE. FINE. HERE'S YOUR FUCKING LANGUAGE. THIS BABY—AHHHH—IS TEARING ME APART. AND YOU—AHHHH—YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT MY LANGUAGE. FUCK. YOUR. LANGUAGE. AHHHHHH."

"THIS IS WORSE THAN DINNER SERVICE." Hua screamed, her grip tightening around Jae-min's hand. "WORSE THAN—AHHHH—THE NIGHT THE FREEZE HIT. WORSE THAN—AHHHH—EVERY FUCKING DINNER RUSH. I WOULD RATHER COOK FOR A THOUSAND PEOPLE. WITH ONE STOVE. AND NO RICE. THAN—AHHHHH—DO THIS."

"You're doing great." Alessia encouraged, her voice steady.

"GREAT." Hua roared. "I'M NOT—AHHHH—GREAT. I'M—AHHHH—LITERALLY DYING. AND YOU—AHHHH—YOU CALL THIS GREAT. FUCK—AHHHH—GREAT."

"Hua." Jae-min tried again, his voice cracking. "You're not dying. You're—"

"DON'T—AHHHH—DON'T TELL ME—AHHHH—WHAT I'M FEELING." Hua roared, her crimson hair wild, her grip crushing Jae-min's hand. "I'M THE ONE—AHHHH—ON THIS BED. I'M THE ONE—AHHHH—PUSHING THIS BABY OUT. AND I'M—AHHHH—DYING. AHHHHHH."

Jae-min shut up. The captain who commanded. The husband who could not. The wisdom of silence when the wife was in labor and cursing in English.

The labor continued. Two hours became three. Three became four. The contractions closer. The pushing harder. The profanity escalating through every English curse word Hua knew—and she knew many. The chef making sure everyone knew exactly how she felt.

The household gathered in the corridor, listening through the walls.

"Does she always—" Gabriel started, her golden eyes wide.

"Always." Jennifer confirmed, her blue eyes knowing. The Synchronizer who had felt Hua's emotions for months. "In the kitchen. When the rice burns. When the fish sticks. When everything goes wrong."

"FUUUUUUCK." Hua's voice shook the walls. The contraction. The peak.

Central Mansion.

The Kitchen.

"More ramyeon?" Ji-yoo offered from the corridor bench, her voice Del Rosario dry. Unfazed. Eight weeks pregnant. A bowl of Jin Ramyeon in her hands. Jae-min's spatial storage had become her personal pantry. The craving. The addiction. The solution to every crisis.

"More ramyeon." Rico accepted, his voice flat. The uncle eating instant noodles while his niece-in-law screamed profanity through the walls. Somehow. It paired well.

Day 388. 06:00 hours.

The central mansion.

The kitchen.

While Hua labored, the household starved. The chef was in the delivery room. The kitchen stood empty. Breakfast was not served.

Ji-yoo took command.

"The kitchen." Ji-yoo declared, her voice carrying the authority of a Del Rosario—not Jae-min's captain voice, but Ji-yoo's. The boss. "I'll cook."

The household froze. The twin who could not cook. The twin who had never cooked. The twin whose greatest culinary achievement before the Freeze was ordering delivery.

"You can't cook." Min-joo countered, his voice flat. The Asura Captain. The boyfriend. The man who would regret speaking.

"I can cook ramyeon." Ji-yoo fired back, her dark eyes sharp. "Ramyeon is cooking. You boil water. You add the noodles. You add the seasoning. You cook. It's cooking."

"That's not cooking." Min-joo corrected, his jaw tight. "That's boiling. Boiling isn't cooking."

"Boiling is cooking." Ji-yoo insisted, already reaching for the noodle packets. "Hua boils rice. Hua boils soup. Therefore, boiling is cooking. I am boiling ramyeon for the household. Therefore... I am cooking."

"She is going to cook. The twin who has never cooked. The twin whose greatest achievement in the kitchen was ordering delivery before the Freeze. The twin who is eight weeks pregnant and addicted to ramyeon. She is going to feed the household. While Hua gives birth. This is a disaster." Min-joo realized, the thought cold and resigned and absolutely certain.

Min-joo looked at Rico. The uncle was watching. The uncle who could not cook either.

"Let her cook." Rico surrendered, his voice flat. "The household will eat. The household will survive. Ramyeon is food. Technically."

"Technically." Min-joo echoed, his black eyes closing.

"MIN-JOO." Ji-yoo commanded, her voice leaving no room for argument. "Get the water. Boil it. Now."

"You are ordering me to boil water." Min-joo measured, his voice hollow. The Asura Captain. The shadow user. The man who hunted assassins. The man being ordered to boil water by his pregnant girlfriend. "I obey."

"Good." Ji-yoo nodded, already tearing open a packet of noodles. "Now get the eggs. And the kimchi. From the storage. Jae-min keeps kimchi in the Void. Get it."

"From the Void." Min-joo repeated, his voice flat. "You want me to ask Jae-min. Who is in the delivery room. Panicking. While his wife gives birth. You want me to interrupt him. For kimchi."

"Yes." Ji-yoo confirmed, without looking up. "Jae-min can multitask. He's the Void Captain. He can open spatial storage while his wife screams."

"I am going to interrupt the void captain. Who is in the delivery room..." Min-joo realized, the thought resigned and absurd.

Min-joo went. To get the kimchi. From the void. From Jae-min. Who was in the delivery room. Panicking. The mission.

The kitchen became Ji-yoo's. The water boiled. The noodles went in. The seasoning went in. The eggs went in. The kimchi went in. Jin Ramyeon. Korean instant noodles. For the household. For breakfast. While Hua gave birth.

The household ate. Ramyeon. At the narra table. Bowls covered. The household eating instant noodles because there was nothing else.

Gabriel ate. Her golden eyes wide. "This is — ramyeon."

"This is breakfast." Ji-yoo countered. Her voice Del Rosario dry. "Eat. It's food. Technically."

"Technically." Gabriel repeated. The wife who ate the ramyeon because there was nothing else.

Rico ate. The uncle who had eaten MREs for thirty years in the AFP. The man who could eat ramyeon. The man who still face-palmed when he saw the ramyeon.

"Ji-yoo." Rico measured. His hand on his face. "You're feeding the household Jin Ramyeon for breakfast. While Hua gives birth."

"Ramyeon is food." Ji-yoo answered. Already preparing the next batch. "Technically."

"Technically." Rico repeated. His hand still on his face. "The household adapts."

"Adapts." Ji-yoo confirmed. "More ramyeon?"

"More ramyeon." Rico surrendered.

"MIN-JOO." Ji-yoo commanded from the kitchen. "More eggs. And more gochu garu. The chili flakes. The ramyeon needs more chili."

"More chili." Min-joo echoed. The Asura captain who boiled and fetched and served.

"And get the cheese." Ji-yoo added. Not looking up from the pot. "Jae-min has cheese in storage. The sliced cheddar. The ramyeon needs cheese on top. Melted. The garnish."

"Garnish." Min-joo stated. His voice hollow. "I am garnishing ramyeon."

"You are garnishing." Ji-yoo confirmed. "With cheese. Because the ramyeon needs cheese. Because — AHHH. The cravings. The baby wants cheese on the ramyeon. NOW."

"I am the Asura captain. The shadow user. The man who hunted Hua Chen in the dark. And I am garnishing ramyeon. With cheese. For my pregnant girlfriend. Who is cooking for the household. While the chef gives birth." Min-joo realized. The thought resigned. Warm. Utterly ridiculous. Completely true.

Min-joo went. To get the cheese. From the void. From Jae-min. Who was in the delivery room. Where his wife was in labor. The mission.

The household ate. Ramyeon with cheese, chili, eggs, and kimchi. The Ji-yoo Special. The ramyeon that would become legendary in the compound. The emergency ramyeon. The crisis ramyeon. The ramyeon the household endured because there was nothing else.

Rico face-palmed again when he saw the cheese. The second face-palm in one morning. The uncle who had accepted his fate.

Day 388. 08:00 hours.

The hospital.

The delivery room.

Six hours of labor. Hua pushed. Screamed. Cursed. The profanity legendary. The kitchen vocabulary deployed in the delivery room. The chef giving birth and making certain everyone knew about it. In every language she spoke.

The baby was stuck. The shoulders. The complication.

Alessia worked. The glow bright. The Life Sense sweeping. The baby's heartbeat fluctuating. Hua's heartbeat spiking. The crisis.

"The shoulders." Alessia announced. Her voice tight. "Shoulder dystocia. The baby's shoulders are stuck. Hua. Stop pushing. I need to rotate."

"FUCK STOP PUSHING." Hua roared. Her violet-blue eyes blazing. "YOU WANT ME TO STOP. THE BABY IS — AHHHH — THE BABY IS COMING. AND YOU WANT ME TO STOP. LIKE STOPPING THE SOUP MID-BOIL. YOU DON'T STOP THE SOUP MID-BOIL. YOU — AHHHHH."

"Hua." Alessia commanded. Her voice clinical. The doctor overriding the wife. "Stop pushing. I need to rotate the baby. Or —"

"OR WHAT." Hua demanded. Her voice lethal. "OR WHAT. ALESSIA. TELL ME. OR WHAT."

Alessia did not answer.

The doctor who was worried.

The Life Sense reading the baby's heartbeat. Fluctuating.

Hua's heartbeat. Spiking.

The crisis.

"Jae-min." Alessia addressed. Her voice quiet. The doctor speaking to the husband. "I need you out. Now."

"Out." Jae-min stammered. The panic spiking. "I'm not leaving. Hua —"

"OUT." Alessia ordered. The glow flaring. The Life fundamental. The doctor. Not the wife. "I need to work. I need space. Wait outside. I will handle this."

"She said handle this. She said out. The doctor. Not the wife. The doctor who knows what she is doing. The doctor who delivered Little Jae-min. I trust her. Even now. Even with the screaming. Even with the baby stuck. I trust Alessia." Jae-min realized. The thought terrified. Certain.

Jae-min went out. Into the corridor. The panic full. The Void captain. The man who could stop time. Could not stop this. The waiting.

— • • • —

Day 388. 08:17 hours.

The hospital.

The corridor.

The wait.

Jae-min paced. The Void captain. The man who had held the Void against two Fundamentals. The man who had put satellites into orbit. The man who could not hold this. The waiting. The not knowing. The silence behind the door.

Rico arrived. The uncle who had eaten the ramyeon. Who had face-palmed. Who was now here with the nephew. In the corridor. The wait.

"Jae-min." Rico murmured. His voice steady. "Alessia is the best. She delivered Little Jae-min. She will deliver Eun-hae. She will handle it."

"Handle it." Jae-min repeated. His voice hollow. Not the captain. The husband. "Hua is — the baby is — Alessia said —"

"Alessia said she needs space." Rico countered. His hand on his nephew's shoulder. "Alessia is the doctor. Alessia is the Life Fundamental. Alessia can heal if something goes wrong. Trust Alessia."

"Trust." Jae-min breathed. The word hard. When the wife was inside. And the doctor was inside. And the captain was outside.

Mei's voice cut through the comms. The Divine Fundamental. The ARTEMIS feed.

"North Luzon. The garrison. Movement. Significant. The garrison is moving south. The invasion has begun."

The captain returned. The husband suppressed. The captain needed.

"The invasion." Jae-min declared. His dark eyes snapping sharp. "The north. Moving. Now. While Hua —"

"While Hua labors." Rico cut in. His voice steady. "The north moves. The compound holds. The captain stays here. With Hua. Olympus Defense handles the north."

[LINDA comms]: "The garrison. Three thousand strong." Mei reported. Her voice clinical. "Moving south. On the highway. Toward Manila. Toward us. ETA forty-eight hours. Maybe less. The invasion from the north that we predicted. It is here."

"Forty-eight hours." Jae-min measured. The captain calculating. The wife laboring. The baby coming. The north invading. "Rico. Defense. The wall. The three-layer defense. The Strike Team. Prepare. The compound holds."

"The compound holds." Rico confirmed. Turning toward the corridor. The uncle who went to prepare the defense. The wall. The war.

While the nephew waited.

For the baby.

— • • • —

Day 388. 08:32 hours.

The hospital.

The delivery room.

The silence.

The screaming stopped. Hua's screaming. The profanity. The noise. Stopped. The silence was wrong. The silence that was not peace. The silence that was the other thing.

Jae-min felt it. The spatial awareness. Hua's heartbeat. Which had been spiking. Strong. Furious. Profane. Faltered. Slowed. Stopped.

"No." Jae-min breathed. His voice breaking. The corridor. The captain gone. The husband full. "No. No. No."

He moved. The void. The door opened. The delivery room revealed.

Hua on the bed. The crimson hair still. The violet-blue eyes closed. The chest not moving.

Alessia at the bed. Her hands on Hua's chest. Compressions. The CPR. The desperation.

The baby remained in Alessia's other arm. Delivered. Eun-hae. The second child. Crying. Healthy. Alive.

Hua was not. The heartbeat stopped. The monitor flatlined. Clinical death. The hemorrhage. The blood loss.

"Hua." Jae-min choked, at the door. The husband who saw. The wife gone. "Hua. No. HUA."

"I'm working." Alessia answered. Her voice clinical. The doctor. Not the wife. Not the cousin. "She's clinically dead. The hemorrhage. The blood loss. Cardiac arrest. I'm doing CPR. Chest compressions. The same thing any doctor in any hospital would do."

"Bring her back." Jae-min commanded. His voice breaking. The captain. The husband. "Bring her back. Alessia. Now."

"I'm trying." Alessia answered. Her voice strained. Her hands on Hua's chest. The compressions. The rhythm. "Four minutes. The brain can survive about six minutes without oxygen. I have two minutes to restart her heart. Before the damage. Before it's permanent."

"Two minutes. The countdown. The wife who cooked for 388 days. The wife who screamed profanity. The wife who crushed my hand. The wife who is dead. And I am watching. Through the door. The Void Captain. Who can stop time. Who can reverse wounds. Who can open holes in space. And cannot save his wife." Jae-min realized, the thought tearing through him. Raw. Cold. Helpless.

The compressions continued. One minute. Two. The monitor flatlined. Hua still. Alessia still compressing. The refusal. The denial. The refusal to let go.

"Come on." Alessia whispered, her arms burning. The doctor. The cousin. "Come on, Hua. Come back. Come back."

Three minutes. Four. Five. The brain beyond the window. The damage beginning. Alessia never stopped.

Six. Seven. Eight. Her arms burned. The fatigue. The exhaustion. Every compression harder than the last.

Nine. Ten. Eleven. Jae-min stood in the doorway. The silence. The flatline. The death that refused to end.

"Alessia." Jae-min breathed, his voice broken. The husband who had lost. "Alessia. Stop. She's gone. Fifteen minutes. Please..."

"NO." Alessia snarled, her voice fierce. The doctor. The cousin. The refusal. "She's not gone. Something's there. Faint. In her chest. The cells... stirring. The biological threshold. The body is still fighting. Keep compressing. Don't stop. Don't—"

"I will not stop. I brought back Little Jae-min. I will bring back Hua. The Life Sense... something. Faint. Barely there. The cells stirring. The threshold. Biology deciding. There is still a chance. I will not stop. Come back. Come back." Alessia realized, the thought fierce and desperate and absolutely refusing.

Twelve minutes. Thirteen. Fourteen. Fifteen.

Hua's heart stuttered. One beat. The flicker. The restart.

Hua's chest rose. One breath. The return.

Hua's chest rose again. The heart beat. Two. The rhythm. The life.

Hua's chest continued to rise. The heartbeat steadied. The rhythm. The return. The revival. The impossible. Alessia never stopped. The CPR. The compressions. The doctor. The cousin. The love. The body choosing life.

The monitor beeped. The heartbeat steady. Hua alive. Fifteen minutes after clinical death. The impossible.

"Hua." Jae-min breathed, at the bed. His hands on her face. The relief. The horror. The everything. "Hua. Hua. Hua."

Hua's violet-blue eyes opened. The life. The return. The confusion.

"Jae-min." Hua whispered, her voice hoarse. The wife who had died and returned. "What — where — the baby —"

"The baby is fine." Alessia answered, her voice exhausted. The baby in her arms. Eun-hae. Crying. Healthy. Alive. "Eun-hae. Girl. Three point three kilograms. Healthy. Perfect."

"The baby." Hua breathed, her arms reaching. The mother. The instinct. The reach for Eun-hae. For her daughter.

Alessia placed the baby in Hua's arms. The second of the nine. Eun-hae. The daughter. The reason for all of it.

"Eun-hae." Hua whispered, the mother who had died and returned. The mother who came back for her daughter. "Eun-hae."

The baby cried. The healthy cry. The life. The new. The second of the nine.

"Alessia." Jae-min addressed, his dark eyes on the first wife. The doctor. The healer. The savior. "You brought her back. Fifteen minutes. You brought her back."

"I brought her back." Alessia confirmed, her voice exhausted, her arms spent. "But something happened. During the death. Something changed in Hua. The biology. The threshold. Something—"

Hua's hand tightened around Jae-min's.

The grip was different. Not the crushing grip of labor. Stronger. Much stronger.

"Jae-min." Hua murmured, her voice different. Not hoarse. Strong. The wife who had died and returned. "My hand. I feel —"

Crack.

The bed shuddered.

Hua's fingers tightened around the steel frame. The metal groaned. Bent. Twisted beneath her grip.

Hua stared at her hand. The wife. The mother. The chef. The strength that should not have been there. The awakening.

"Alessia." Jae-min pressed, his dark eyes fixed on the bent steel. The impossible. "What... what happened?"

"The death and the return." Alessia answered, her voice quiet. The doctor who understood. "The biological trauma. Hua crossed the threshold between baseline and Enhanced. Death became the trigger. The natural trigger. The body shutting down. The awakening happened on its own."

She paused, her glow pulsing.

"The Life did not do this." Alessia continued, her voice careful. "The Life kept her body fighting. CPR. Chest compressions. The normal. The medical. The same thing any doctor would have done. But the dead cannot be revived. Not by medicine. Not by the Life. That is the rule. Hua crossed the threshold herself. Her body awakened on its own. I only refused to stop."

"The threshold. The awakening. Cannot be forced. Cannot be triggered by powers. By Life. By Creation. By anything. It is crossed naturally. Death. Near-death. The body makes the choice. Biology makes the choice. No one else. The awakening is beyond our control." Alessia realized, the thought cold and certain and awed.

"Natural." Jae-min repeated, the word landing heavy.

"Natural." Alessia confirmed. "Superhuman strength. Like Uncle. Group 3. Body enhancement. The near-death triggered the threshold. Hua crossed naturally. The awakening is natural."

"Enhanced." Hua breathed, the word new. The chef who had been baseline for 388 days. The chef who had died and returned. Different. Stronger. "Enhanced."

"Enhanced." Jae-min confirmed, his dark eyes on his wife. On the bent steel. On the baby. On the everything. "Superhuman strength. Like Rico."

Hua looked at her hand. At the bent steel. At the strength. The violet-blue eyes wide. The crimson hair wild. The baby in her other arm. Eun-hae. Crying. Healthy. The daughter.

"I died." Hua whispered, the realization landing. "I died. And came back. And — this."

"You died." Jae-min confirmed, his hand on her face. "And came back. And — this. Superhuman strength. Enhanced. The awakening."

Hua was quiet for a moment. The baby in her arms. The bent steel under her hand. The strength humming through her body — new, raw, uncontrolled.

"I'm going to crush so many garlic cloves." Hua declared, her voice certain.

Jae-min laughed. The laugh that was relief and horror and love and everything. The laugh that broke the tension and the fear and the everything. The captain laughed. The husband laughed. The man laughed. At the garlic. At the Hua. At the impossible made real.

"She died. For fifteen minutes. And came back. Stronger. And the first thing she says — garlic cloves. The chef. Even after death. Even after awakening. My wife. My Hua." Jae-min realized, the thought warm and tearing and blazing and absolutely certain.

"Eun-hae." Hua murmured, looking at the baby. The daughter. The second of the nine. "Your mother died. And came back. Stronger. To cook for you. Always. With superhuman strength."

"There's my Hua." Jae-min chuckled, his dark eyes wet. The husband. The relief. The woman who had crossed death itself. And still thought about cooking.

"Always." Hua whispered, her violet-blue eyes shimmering with tears. The chef. The mother. The wife.

Hua cradled Eun-hae against her chest. The daughter. The second of the nine. The reason she fought. The reason she returned.

The steel beneath Hua's hand remained bent inward. The grip. The strength. The awakening. The chef. The mother. The wife. The Enhanced.

Day 388. 10:00 hours.

The central mansion.

The Atrium.

The narra table.

The household gathered. The news had spread — Hua alive. The baby born. Eun-hae. The Second Child. And the awakening. Hua Enhanced. Superhuman strength. The impossible that had happened while the household ate ramyeon.

Ji-yoo sat at the table, still cooking. Ramyeon. For the household. Because Hua was in the hospital and the kitchen was Ji-yoo's. The crisis that continued even after the baby. Even after the death. Even after the awakening. The household was still hungry. And the ramyeon was still flowing.

"Hua's Enhanced." Ji-yoo announced, her voice Del Rosario dry, eating her own ramyeon. She had fed the household while Hua died and returned. Stronger. "Superhuman strength. Like Uncle. The chef who can now crush steel. And garlic. And everything."

"Everything." Rico confirmed, leaning forward. The uncle who shared the power. Superhuman strength. Group 3. The Olympus Defense commander who understood what Hua was now. What Hua could do. "She'll need training. The strength is not automatic. The control. The precision. The limit. She'll need to learn not to crush everything she touches."

"Training." Jae-min confirmed, the captain back. The husband suppressed. The captain needed. "Uncle. You train her. The superhuman strength. The control. After she recovers. After the baby. After everything."

"I'll train her." Rico confirmed. The uncle who would teach. The cousin who would learn. The strength shared. Olympus growing.

"And the baby." Alessia reported, her voice exhausted. The doctor. The healer. The savior. Her arms spent. The cost written on her face. "Eun-hae. Girl. Three point three kilograms. Healthy. Perfect. The Second Child. Born Day 388."

"The baby." The table echoed. The household. The nine growing. The Second Child. The reason.

"And the north." Mei interjected, her violet-blue eyes lifting from the tablet. The divine fundamental. The monitor. "The garrison. Moving south. The invasion continuing. ETA forty-eight hours. The north. While the baby was born. While Hua died and returned. The north moving."

"The north." Jae-min addressed, his dark eyes hardening. The captain. Fully back. The priority shifting. The wife alive. The baby healthy. The north coming. "Rico. Defense. The wall. The three-layer defense. The Strike Team. The north comes in forty-eight hours. The compound holds."

"The compound holds." Rico confirmed, his voice rough and certain. The uncle who would hold the wall against the north while the household recovered from the birth. From the death. From the awakening. The war and the life. At the same time.

"And Hua." Jae-min continued, his dark eyes on the corridor leading to the hospital. Where Hua rested with Eun-hae. With the strength. "Hua rests. Recovers. From the death. From the revival. From the awakening. Hua does not cook. Hua does not fight. Hua rests. With the baby. With Eun-hae."

"Rests." Alessia confirmed, her voice clinical. "Hua rests for two weeks minimum. The body recovering from death. From revival. From the awakening. The cells regenerating. The strength stabilizing. Two weeks. Then training with Uncle."

"Two weeks." Jae-min confirmed. "Hua rests. Two weeks. Then trains. Then cooks. With superhuman strength."

"And the ramyeon." Ji-yoo added, her voice Del Rosario dry. Still cooking. "The household eats ramyeon for two weeks. While Hua rests. The Ji-yoo kitchen. The crisis continuing."

"Two weeks of ramyeon." Rico measured, his hand finding his face. The face-palm. The third in one morning. The uncle who face-palmed at two weeks of ramyeon.

"Two weeks." Ji-yoo confirmed. "More ramyeon?"

"More ramyeon." Rico surrendered, the uncle who accepted his fate.

The household laughed. The laugh that was relief — after the death, after the revival, after the awakening. The household laughed at the ramyeon and the face-palm and the Ji-yoo. Because that was what Olympus did. Laughed in the crisis. And held in the crisis. And grew in the crisis.

The snow fell against the skylights. The narra table. The Steinway. The household. The ramyeon. The baby. The nine. The Second Child. The awakening. The war coming from the north. Everything at once.

For the nine.

Always.

Forever.

— • • • —

Day 388. 12:00 hours.

The hospital.

Hua's room.

The visitors.

Hua lay in the bed. The baby in her arms. Eun-hae. The Second Child. The daughter. The mother who had died and returned. Stronger. Enhanced. The chef who could now crush steel — holding the baby gently. Carefully. With the superhuman strength controlled. Barely. The new.

Jae-min sat beside the bed. The husband. The captain. The man who had watched his wife die and return. The relief and the horror and the love all on his face at once.

The household filed in. One by one. To see the baby. The mother. The miracle.

Rico came first. The uncle. The Olympus Defense commander. The man who shared the power. Superhuman strength. The man who would train Hua. He looked at Hua. At the baby. At the bent steel frame. And nodded. The nod that meant welcome. To the Enhanced.

"Welcome." Rico murmured, his voice simple and warm. The uncle. The strength shared.

"Welcome." Hua answered, her violet-blue eyes bright. The chef who was Enhanced. The new.

Ji-yoo came next. With ramyeon. A bowl. For Hua. Because Ji-yoo was still cooking and because Hua needed to eat — even after death, even after revival, even after awakening.

"Ramyeon." Ji-yoo offered, extending the bowl. "For the mother. The post-death meal. The Ji-yoo Special."

"Post-death meal." Hua repeated, her voice incredulous. The chef who had died and returned to Jin Ramyeon. "I died. And came back. To Jin Ramyeon."

"Jin Ramyeon." Ji-yoo confirmed, her voice Del Rosario dry. "With cheese. And egg. And kimchi. The full special. For the woman who died and came back stronger."

Hua looked at the ramyeon. The bowl. The noodles she had not cooked. That Ji-yoo had cooked for her. The ramyeon that was not Hua's. But was food. Technically.

"This is terrible." Hua assessed, eating the ramyeon. The chef who evaluated even after death. "The noodles are overcooked. The broth has too much water. The egg is overboiled. The cheese is wrong cheese. This is not food. This is emergency ration."

"Emergency ration." Ji-yoo confirmed, her voice steady. "For the emergency that was your death and revival. The Ji-yoo kitchen. The crisis solution."

"She died for fifteen minutes. Came back with superhuman strength. And the first thing she does — critique my ramyeon. The chef. Even after death. The Hua. I fed the household. While she died. And she — critiques. The ramyeon. The Hua." Ji-yoo realized, the thought wry and warm and absolutely Hua.

"I'll cook." Hua declared, eating the terrible ramyeon anyway — because she had been dead for fifteen minutes and the ramyeon was warm and the baby was in her arms and the household was around her and everything was okay despite the ramyeon. "When I recover. Real food. Not this. The household will eat real food again. When Hua returns to the kitchen. With superhuman strength."

"The Hua." The household echoed from the doorway. The chef who had died and returned. Stronger. With opinions about the ramyeon.

Gabriel came next, her golden eyes on the baby. "Eun-hae. She's beautiful."

"Beautiful." Hua confirmed, the mother's pride surfacing through the exhaustion. "She has Jae-min's eyes."

"Thank god." Gabriel blurted, her golden eyes bright. "Not the violet-blue. The Del Rosario dark eyes. The good eyes."

"Hey." Hua fired back, her violet-blue eyes narrowing. The chef who was offended. For her eyes. "My eyes are beautiful."

"Your eyes are terrifying." Gabriel countered, her bounce returning. "Especially when you're screaming in labor."

"The labor." Hua murmured, the memory surfacing. "The profanity."

"The profanity." Gabriel confirmed, her golden eyes wide. "The household learned new words. The education."

"The education." Hua echoed, the chef who had educated the household in profanity while giving birth.

"She cursed while pushing out a baby. Died for fifteen minutes. Came back with superhuman strength. And now she's being teased about her eyes. By Gabriel. Who lip-locks me at the narra table. This is — Olympus. This is what we do. We tease. We laugh. We hold. After everything." Jae-min realized, the thought warm and fierce and aching and absolutely certain.

Mei came next. The wheelchair. Chocho. The violet-blue eyes on the baby. On Hua. The divine fundamental who had monitored the birth, the death, the revival, the awakening — everything. From the command deck. While eating ramyeon.

"The awakening." Mei reported, her voice clinical. "Superhuman strength. Group 3. Body enhancement. The near-death triggered the threshold. The revival completed. The cells stabilized. The strength manifesting. Hua is the second Enhanced in the household. After Rico."

"Growing." Hua confirmed, her hand on Eun-hae. The Enhanced growing. Olympus growing.

"The north." Mei continued, her violet-blue eyes lifting from the tablet. "The garrison. Moving south. Forty-eight hours. The war coming. While the baby was born. While the mother revived. The timing."

"Timing." Jae-min measured, his dark eyes hardening. The captain. "The north. Forty-eight hours. The compound holds. While Hua recovers. While Eun-hae grows. Everything at once."

"Uncle." Jae-min addressed, his voice shifting to the captain's register. "The wall. The defense. The north comes in forty-eight hours. Prepare everything. The Strike Team. The three-layer defense. The 9th Infantry remnants. The volunteers. The compound holds while the household recovers."

"The compound holds." Rico confirmed, his voice rough and certain. The uncle who would prepare the defense. The wall. The war. While the household recovered from the miracle. Olympus at war and at life. At the same time.

"At once." The household echoed from the doorway. The word that meant everything. The birth. The death. The revival. The awakening. The war. The north. The baby. The ramyeon. The profanity. The face-palms. Everything at once. Olympus.

The baby cried. Eun-hae. The Second Child. The daughter. The reason. The baby who had been born while the mother died and returned. Stronger. The miracle. The nine growing. Olympus stronger.

The snow fell against the windows. The hospital. The room. The mother. The baby. The household. The nine growing. The war coming. Everything at once. And Olympus — holding. Through all of it.

For the nine. The Second Child. The mother returned. Stronger.
