Chapter 310 - The Three

Day 373. 05:15 hours.

The field.

South of the wall.

The battle — fifteen minutes in.

The snow had stopped falling.

Not because the sky had cleared — the charcoal sky was still charcoal, still heavy, still dead — but because the heat from four fundamental-tier powers colliding had created a dome of relative warmth that pushed the snow upward, deflecting it, melting it before it reached the ground.

The field was a circle of bare earth surrounded by three-meter snow walls, a bowl carved by power, and in that bowl seven fought seven.

Jae-min held the center.

His void tear was open — three meters of stable aperture that absorbed Wei Chen's gravity field the way a drain absorbs water.

The gravity that crushed, that pinned, that flattened — the void ate it.

But the effort was visible in the set of his jaw, in the veins standing out on his forearms, in the way his dark eyes had narrowed to slits. He was holding one fundamental with the void and countering another with Time, and the strain was real.

Anna fought Ling Chen.

The Right Hand, who was the knife, who was the Preta-trained CQC, who closed the distance with the sister and slashed. Ling Chen's force field repelled — the push that threw, that shattered — but Anna was fast, faster than the force field could track.

She moved the way Rose McDowell had trained her to move — low, quick, unpredictable, the knife flashing in arcs that Ling Chen had to split her attention to block.

Every second Anna drew Ling Chen's focus was a second Jae-min could breathe.

Mark Jordan fought Yu Chen.

The Black Hell Flame against the Heat — black fire against orange fire, two furnaces blazing at each other across twenty meters of steaming ground.

The snow had melted in a ten-meter radius around them, the earth beneath was cracked and dry, and the air between them shimmered with thermal distortion.

Mark Jordan's flame was hotter — the Black Hell Flame burned without fuel, without limit, the forge-fire that had built the Heracles frames — but Yu Chen's heat was broader, wider, a wave rather than a beam, and Mark Jordan had to constantly reposition to keep the heat from reaching the wall behind him.

"Yu Chen is pushing south." Mark Jordan reported through the comms, his voice tight. "He's trying to flank me, get around my left, reach the wall. I'm holding but he's persistent."

"Hold." Jae-min commanded, his voice strained. "Do not let him past you. The wall is the second layer. You are the first."

"Copy." Mark Jordan acknowledged, surging the Black Hell Flame higher. The black fire roared, pushing Yu Chen back three steps. The uncle who was weathered and thick and whose heat incinerated — retreating.

For now.

Min-joo and Hua Chen fought in the shadows.

Two shadows moving through the dark spaces between the combatants — the shadow of the snow walls, the shadow of the field's edge, the shadow of the dead trees.

Min-joo hunted.

The Asura captain, whose Shadow power was the only Shadow in the compound, was the counter to Hua Chen's Shadow.

Two shadows, equal in nature, hunting each other through the dark.

The Asura Hell Katana flashed when they crossed — steel catching the dim light, the soulbound weapon that was Min-joo's, that had manifested from the Trinity of Manifestation.

Hua Chen dodged, retreated, shifted — the aunt whose power was the shadow that assassinated, who was used to being the hunter, not the hunted.

Min-joo had flipped the dynamic.

He was hunting her.

"She's fast." Min-joo reported through the comms, his voice low. "But I'm tracking. She's not reaching the interior. She's not reaching the hospital."

The hospital. Where Ji-yoo was. Where the ninth was. Min-joo fought for the hospital.

The woman in white held the front line.

She stood between the Strike Team and the three unknown — the three who had not moved, who had not engaged, who stood fifty meters behind the four known and watched.

The woman in white's dual katanas were drawn, her regeneration humming passive, her green eyes behind the goggles fixed on the three.

She was the wall that was not the wall.

She was the line that did not break.

Yue stood at the right flank, the jian drawn, the Space power ready. The marble woman whose Blink could extract anyone, anywhere, in an instant. She had not Blinked yet. She had not needed to.

The line was holding.

For now.

Gabriel flew above.

The Solar Wind carrying her, the golden eyes seeing everything from thirty meters up. She was the eyes — the aerial view, the perspective that the ground fighters did not have. She reported every movement, every shift, every change.

"Abby — report." Jae-min commanded, his voice strained as Wei Chen's gravity field surged again.

"The four known are engaged." Gabriel reported from above. "Wei Chen on you. Ling Chen on Anna. Yu Chen on Mark Jordan. Hua Chen — shadow, Min-joo shadow. The three unknown — still holding. Still behind. Still waiting. They haven't moved."

"They're waiting." Jae-min confirmed through gritted teeth. The gravity field pushed, the void tear absorbed, and the effort was visible. "They're waiting for us to tire. They're waiting for the four known to weaken us. Then the three deploy."

"That's the strategy." Anna noted, her voice tight as she dodged another force repel from Ling Chen. She rolled left, came up slashing, the knife catching the edge of Ling Chen's force field and skittering off. "Wear us down with the four. Finish with the three. Classic."

"Classic." Jae-min confirmed. "But we don't tire. We hold. The counters hold. Until they deploy. Then the reserve adapts."

"Copy." The team acknowledged.

The battle continued. Minute by minute. The snow was deflected upward by the heat. The earth cracked. The air screamed. Seven against seven. Even.

Day 373. 05:30 hours.

The field.

Thirty minutes in.

Wei Chen was getting frustrated.

The cousin whose gravity field could crush buildings, could pin armies, could flatten cities — and the void captain was eating it.

The void tear absorbed every push, every crush, every pin.

Wei Chen had never encountered a power that could neutralize his gravity. In the Chen Family's private training, in twenty years of combat drills, no one had ever simply absorbed his power.

The void was not blocking the gravity. The void was not deflecting the gravity. The void was swallowing it. The gravity went in and did not come out. It disappeared.

Into the hole in space.

Into nowhere.

"You cannot hold forever." Wei Chen declared, his voice flat but strained. The cousin who pushed harder. The gravity field intensified — the crushing force doubling, tripling, the air around Jae-min compressing, the ground beneath his feet cracking. "The void has limits. Everything has limits."

"Everything has limits." Jae-min confirmed, his voice steady despite the strain. "Your gravity has limits. My void has limits. The question is — whose limit comes first."

"Mine will not." Wei Chen vowed, pushing harder.

"Mine will not either." Jae-min countered, and opened the void tear wider — four meters.

The aperture that had been three was now four.

The gravity that had been pushing against three meters of void was now pushing against four. The absorption rate doubled.

Wei Chen's gravity field stuttered. The cousin whose face went surprised. For the first time.

"Time." Ling Chen called from her fight with Anna, her voice sharp. The sister who saw the stutter. The sister who understood. "He's using Time. He's reversing the fatigue. He's unwinding the strain. He's refreshing himself."

"He's refreshing himself." Wei Chen confirmed, understanding. The cousin who recalculated. "Then we push before he can refresh. Both of us. Now."

Ling Chen disengaged from Anna — a force repel that threw Anna backward ten meters, the Right Hand tumbling in the snow, the knife flying from her hand. Ling Chen turned to Jae-min and pushed.

The force field — the repel, the throw, the shatter — combined with Wei Chen's gravity. Two fundamentals. One target. Maximum output.

The combined force hit the void tear like a freight train. The aperture — four meters — collapsed to three. To two. To one. The void that had been stable was failing. The void tear that had been absorbing was breaking.

Jae-min's dark eyes went wide. The captain who felt the void tear collapsing. The captain who felt the two fundamentals pushing through.

"The void is collapsing. The aperture — one meter. The gravity and the force — pushing through. I can't — the void can't —" Jae-min realized, the thought cold and sharp and desperate.

The captain used Time.

The Time reversal hummed — not reversing the force, not unwinding the push, but reversing the void tear itself. Reversing the collapse. The aperture that had been collapsing stopped. The two meters that had been one became two again. Three. Four.

The void tear that had been failing held. Because Time could reverse not just the enemy's attack but the void's own failure. Jae-min could rewind his own power's collapse.

"He reversed the void." Ling Chen breathed, her voice stunned. "He reversed the void's own collapse. He used Time on himself."

"On himself." Wei Chen repeated, his face blank. The cousin who had never seen this. The cousin who had never fought a Space and Time user. The cousin who did not know how to counter this.

Because there was no counter.

Space and Time together — the two fundamentals that could not be countered. Space absorbed. Time reversed. Together they held. Against anything. Against two fundamentals. Against gravity and force combined. The void held. The Time held. The captain held.

Jae-min held.

But the effort was devastating. The Time reversal of his own void tear's collapse cost him — essence, focus, strain. The captain whose dark eyes were no longer slits but wide. The captain whose jaw was no longer set but trembling. The captain who held — barely.

"Anna." Jae-min rasped, his voice rough and strained. The captain who needed help. "Status."

Anna was on her feet.

The Right Hand who had been thrown, who had tumbled, who had lost her knife — was standing. She pulled a second knife from her boot. The Preta vice captain who always carried two.

She was bleeding from a cut on her forehead where she'd hit the snow. She was standing.

"I'm up." Anna reported, her voice tight. "Knife two. I'm re-engaging Ling Chen."

"Re-engage." Jae-min confirmed. "Draw her off me. I need space."

"Copy." Anna moved — the Right Hand who closed the distance again, who was the knife. Ling Chen saw her coming and split her force field — half on Jae-min, half on Anna.

The force that was divided was weaker.

Jae-min felt the reduction. The void tear stabilized. The captain breathed.

"Min-joo — status." Jae-min commanded.

"Still hunting." Min-joo reported from the shadows. "Hua Chen is — she's good. She's the best shadow user I've ever seen. But she can't reach the interior. I'm between her and the wall. She knows it. She's frustrated."

"Frustrated is good." Jae-min confirmed. "Keep her frustrated. Keep her away from the wall."

"Copy." Min-joo acknowledged. The Asura captain who hunted. The Asura captain who fought for Ji-yoo. For the baby. For both.

"Mark Jordan — status." Jae-min commanded.

"Holding." Mark Jordan reported, the Black Hell Flame roaring against Yu Chen's heat. "Yu Chen pushed hard, tried to flank. I cut him off. He's back to direct engagement. The wall is untouched. The snow around us is melted but the wall is intact. The wall holds."

"The wall holds." Jae-min confirmed. "Abby — the three."

"The three — they're moving." Gabriel reported from above, her golden eyes wide. "Jae-min — the three are moving. They're advancing. They're deploying."

— • • • —

Day 373. 05:35 hours.

The field.

The three.

The three unknown advanced. The three whose faces were masks, whose powers were unknown, whose capabilities were — now — revealing.

The three who moved forward from the rear, walking through the snow, crossing the fifty meters between their holding position and the front line.

The three who were the reserve, the failsafe, the three that the Chen Family deployed only if the first four failed.

The first four had not failed. Not yet. But the first four had not broken through. The first four had not won. The first four were stalemated. And stalemate was failure for the Chen Family.

Stalemate meant the void captain held. Stalemate meant the wall held. Stalemate meant the cage did not get what it needed. So the three deployed — not because the four failed, but because the four did not succeed fast enough.

The three advanced. The woman in white saw them first. The green eyes behind the goggles. The dual katanas. The regeneration. The front line. The wall that was not the wall.

The woman in white could not speak — but she could signal. She raised her left katana. Pointed at the three. The signal that meant incoming.

"I see them." Jae-min confirmed, his spatial awareness sweeping the three as they advanced. Three signatures. Fundamental-tier. Large. The signatures that Mei had detected on the ship but could not identify.

The signatures that Yi Chen could not brief because the Chen Family had kept them hidden. Even from the heir.

"Mei." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "The three are deploying. Can you read them."

[Mei]: "Scanning." The divine fundamental's fingers moved on the tablet. The sensors that reached across the compound, across the field. "Reading three signatures. Fundamental-tier. The first — large. Expansive. The signature is broad. Not gravity. Not force. Not heat. Not shadow. Something else. I have not seen this before."

She paused, scrolling.

[Mei]: "The second — compact. Dense. Concentrated. The signature is tight. Like a knot." Mei continued, her voice dropping. "The third — I cannot read. The third is masked. Shielded. I cannot get a signature."

"Cannot read." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who filed. The captain who calculated. Two readable. One not. The two readable were unknown powers. The third was hidden — deliberately hidden. The Chen Family had masked the third's signature. Even from Mei's sensors. Even from the divine fundamental.

"Reserve." Jae-min commanded. "The three are deploying. Woman in white — hold the front. Engage the first. Yue — backup. Engage the second if needed. Abby — aerial. Track the third. The masked one. Do not lose the masked one."

"Copy." The reserve acknowledged. Three voices. Three who would adapt.

The three reached the front line. Fifty meters became thirty. Thirty became twenty. Twenty became ten. The three who stopped — ten meters from the woman in white. The three who stood, facing the reserve.

The first was a man. Tall. Broad. The man whose signature was large and expansive — the power that was broad, that was not gravity, not force, not heat, not shadow. The man whose face was young. Younger than the four known. Thirty, maybe.

The man whose power was Light.

The man raised his hands. The light came — not from his hands, not from the sky, not from anywhere. The light came from everywhere. The field that had been gray, that had been charcoal, that had been the color of the dead sky — was suddenly white. Blindingly white.

The light that was not sunlight, not moonlight, not neon — the light that was fundamental-tier Light. The power to create. To generate. To radiate. Light.

The light was blinding. The woman in white's goggles — the goggles that protected her eyes, that let her see in the snow, in the dark — the goggles were not enough. The light was fundamental-tier. The light was absolute.

The woman in white who could not see. The woman in white who was blind.

"Abby — report." Jae-min commanded, his own dark eyes squinting against the light. The void tear could absorb gravity. The void tear could not absorb light. The light was everywhere. There was nothing to absorb. Light was not a force. Light was not a push. Light was light.

"The light user — he's flooding the field." Gabriel reported from above, her voice sharp. "I can see from above — the light is localized. It's a dome. Twenty-meter radius. Everyone inside the dome is blinded. The woman in white is blind. Yue is blind. Anna is blind. Anyone without protection is blind."

She paused.

"I can see." Gabriel continued, her voice steadying. "I'm above the dome. The Solar Wind — my eyes are adapted for solar radiation. The light doesn't blind me from above. I can see everything."

"Then be the eyes." Jae-min commanded. "Call the targets. Guide the reserve."

"Copy." Gabriel acknowledged. The wife who flew. The wife who was the air. The wife who was the eyes. "Woman in white — the light user is ten meters in front of you. Direct center. Advance and engage. He has no defensive power visible — just the light. If you reach him, he's close range. Your katanas. Your regeneration. He cannot hurt you if you reach him."

The woman in white moved.

The woman who was blind but who could hear Gabriel's voice, who could follow the aerial directions. The woman who moved forward, the katanas raised, the regeneration humming.

The woman who could not see but who could fight. The woman who had fought in the dark for five months. The woman who had fought blind before. The woman who did not need eyes. The woman who needed ears. And Gabriel was the eyes.

"Left." Gabriel called. "He's shifting left. Three meters. Adjust."

The woman in white adjusted.

The katanas flashed. The light user panicked — the man whose power was the light that blinded, who had no close-range defense, who had never fought someone who could fight blind. The man who retreated.

"He's retreating." Gabriel reported. "The light user is backing off. The woman in white — keep pushing. He can't fight you close."

The woman in white pushed.

The katanas flashing. The regeneration that kept her standing. The light that was still blinding — but the woman in white did not need the light. The woman in white fought in the dark. Always had.

The second of the three stepped forward.

The woman whose signature was compact, dense, concentrated — the power that was tight, like a knot. The woman whose face was still. Whose body was still.

The woman whose power was Sound.

The sound came — not as noise, not as volume, but as pressure. The sound that was not heard but felt. The sound that was vibration. Fundamental-tier Sound. The power to vibrate. To shake. To shatter. Not with force. With frequency.

The sound that could find the resonant frequency of anything — bone, steel, earth, flesh — and shatter it from within.

The sound hit the woman in white.

The woman who was pushing the light user back. The sound that found her bones. The sound that vibrated her skeleton. The sound that hurt.

The woman in white staggered.

The regeneration fought the damage — the bones that cracked, that healed, that cracked again, that healed again. The regeneration that kept up. Barely.

"Yue." Jae-min commanded. "Engage the sound user. Blink behind her. Close range. The jian."

"Copy." Yue acknowledged. The marble woman who Blinked — the Space power that moved her from the right flank to behind the sound user in an instant. One moment she was thirty meters away. The next she was there. Behind the sound user. The jian drawn. The marble woman who struck.

The sound user reacted.

The woman whose power was the vibration — who felt the spatial displacement behind her, who turned, who released a sound pulse that hit Yue at point-blank range.

The marble woman who cracked.

The marble that was already cracking, that had been cracking since Little Jae-min's birth — the sound pulse hit the marble and the marble shattered. A piece of the marble broke off. Yue's left arm. The marble that had been her skin — cracked. Fell. The arm beneath — bare. Human. Vulnerable.

"Yue — hit!" Gabriel reported from above, her voice tight. "The sound user hit Yue. Yue's marble — compromised. Left arm. The marble cracked off. She's exposed."

"Yue — extract." Jae-min commanded. "Blink out. Now."

"Copy." Yue Blinked — the Space power that moved her from behind the sound user to behind the woman in white. Thirty meters in an instant. The marble woman whose left arm was bare. The marble woman whose left arm was bleeding. The marble woman who was wounded.

"Woman in white — cover Yue." Jae-min commanded. "Yue — can you fight."

"The arm — I can still fight." Yue reported, her voice strained. The marble woman who held the jian in her right hand. The marble woman whose left arm was bare, bleeding, vulnerable. "The marble will regrow. It always does. But it takes time."

"Then hold." Jae-min commanded. "One arm. Hold."

"One arm." Yue confirmed. The marble woman who held with one arm. The marble woman who was still standing. The marble woman who did not fall.

"Abby — the third." Jae-min commanded. "The masked one. Where is the masked one."

Gabriel's golden eyes swept from above.

The Solar Wind carrying her. The aerial view. The field. The six who fought. The light user who retreated from the woman in white. The sound user who had wounded Yue. The four known who still fought. And the third — the masked one.

"The third —" Gabriel started. Her voice changed. Her golden eyes widened. "Jae-min. The third is gone."

"Gone." Jae-min repeated. The captain whose spatial awareness swept the field. The six signatures. The light user. The sound user. Wei Chen. Ling Chen. Yu Chen. Hua Chen. But not the third.

The third whose signature was masked.

The third who was gone. Not gone — not departed, not fled. Gone from detection. Invisible. Undetectable. Even to Jae-min's spatial awareness. Even to the void captain's three-kilometer sweep.

"The third is invisible." Jae-min stated, his voice tight. "Undetectable. My spatial awareness cannot find the third. Mei cannot find the third. The third is here. Somewhere. But we cannot see the third."

"Then the third is the assassin." Anna declared, her voice tight as she fought Ling Chen. The Right Hand who understood. "The light user blinds. The sound user shatters. The third kills. In the dark. While we cannot see."

"The assassin." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who calculated. The invisible fundamental. The one who could not be detected. The one who could be anywhere. Behind any of them. Behind him. Behind Min-joo. Behind Mark Jordan. Behind any of the seven.

"Everyone — watch your backs." Jae-min commanded. "The third is invisible. Undetectable. Could be anywhere. If you feel anything — anything at all — move. Do not stay still."

"Copy." The team acknowledged. Seven voices. Seven who were now fighting six visible enemies and one invisible one.

"Min-joo — can you sense the third." Jae-min pressed. The Asura captain whose Shadow power could detect movement in the dark. The Shadow that saw what light could not.

"Scanning." Min-joo reported from the shadows. The Asura captain who was still hunting Hua Chen — but now also scanning for the third. "I can feel disturbances. In the shadow. Small. Faint. Like something is moving through the shadow without being in the shadow. The third is passing through shadows. Not using shadow power. Just moving through dark spaces. Undetectable to light-based sensing. But not to shadow-based."

"Can you track the third." Jae-min pressed.

"Maybe." Min-joo answered. "If the third passes through a shadow I'm connected to — I can feel the displacement. Like a fish swimming through water. I can feel the ripple. But I cannot see the fish."

"Feel the ripples." Jae-min commanded. "Track the ripples. If the third approaches anyone — warn them."

"Copy." Min-joo acknowledged. The Asura captain who hunted one shadow user and tracked an invisible assassin. The man who fought for Ji-yoo. For the baby. For both. And now — for everyone.

The battle continued. Seven against seven — but one of the seven was invisible. The light user who blinded. The sound user who shattered. The invisible one who waited. For the right moment. For the opening. For the kill.

"Abby." Jae-min commanded. "Stay in the air. Do not come down. The third — if the third can go invisible, the third can also fly. Or climb. Or jump. Stay high. Stay moving. Do not be a stationary target."

"Copy." Gabriel acknowledged from thirty meters up. The wife who flew. The wife who was the eyes. The wife who was high, moving, not stationary.

The field. The snow. The light dome. The sound vibrations. The invisible assassin. The seven who fought. The seven who held. Barely.

"Mei." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "The third is invisible. Undetectable. Fundamental-tier. The third is the assassin. Any ideas."

[Mei]: "Scanning." The divine fundamental's fingers moved on the tablet. "The Mind Control — my Mind Control. If the third is within range — thirty meters — I can attempt to detect the third's mind. The third can hide the signature. The third can hide from spatial awareness. But can the third hide from a mind scan."

She paused.

[Mei]: "The mind is not a signature. The mind is consciousness. If the third is conscious — and the third is within thirty meters — I can find the third." Mei concluded, her voice sharp with certainty.

"Do it." Jae-min commanded. "Mind scan. The field. Thirty-meter radius from the center. Find the third."

[Mei]: "Scanning." The pause. The divine fundamental whose Mind Control swept — not through space, not through shadow, but through minds. Through consciousness. Through the thing that could not be masked because masking a signature was not masking a mind.

"I have the third." Mei reported, her voice dropping. "The third is behind you. Jae-min. Five meters behind you. The third is behind you."

Jae-min moved.

The captain who moved — not forward, not left, not right, but up. The void tear opened beneath his feet and he fell through — the hole in space that deposited him three meters to the left.

The space where he had been standing was empty. And in that empty space — a blade appeared. A blade that had not been there. A blade that materialized from nothing — from the invisible.

The blade that would have gone through Jae-min's spine. The blade that missed. Because Mei had found the mind. And Jae-min had moved.

"The third — behind me." Jae-min confirmed, his dark eyes wide. "Mei found the third. Mind scan. The third cannot hide from the mind scan."

"Copy." The team acknowledged. The invisible assassin who could not hide from the Mind Control. The divine fundamental who was the brain. The divine fundamental who was the counter to the invisible.

"Mei — keep scanning." Jae-min commanded. "Every time the third moves — tell me. Tell the team. The third cannot hide from your mind."

[Mei]: "Scanning. Continuous. The third is moving. Circling. Looking for an opening." Mei reported, her voice clinical. "The third felt the mind scan — the third knows I can see the third. The third is cautious now. The third knows the invisibility is compromised."

"Good." Jae-min confirmed. "Keep the third cautious. Keep the third visible. To me."

The battle shifted.

The invisible assassin was no longer invisible — not to Mei's mind scan. The third who could hide from spatial awareness, from shadow tracking, from every sensor — could not hide from the Mind Control.

The divine fundamental who was the brain. The divine fundamental who was the counter.

The seven who fought.

The seven who held.

The light user who blinded — pushed back by the woman in white. The sound user who shattered — blocked by Yue's one-armed defense. The invisible assassin — tracked by Mei's mind scan. The four known — stalemated by the counters.

Seven against seven.

Even. But the seven were holding. And the Chen Family's seven were not breaking through.

"Jae-min." Gabriel reported from above. "The four known — they're tiring. Wei Chen's gravity field is weakening. Ling Chen's force field is diminishing. Yu Chen's heat is cooling. Hua Chen's shadow is thinning. They're running out of energy."

She paused.

"The fundamental-tier output — it's not sustainable." Gabriel continued, her voice dropping. "Not at this rate. Not against counters."

"They're tiring." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who felt it. Wei Chen's gravity that had been crushing was now pushing. The push that was weaker. The push that the void tear absorbed easily now. The captain who could breathe.

"Push back." Jae-min commanded. "All counters — push back. Mark Jordan — surge the flame. Min-joo — close on Hua Chen. Anna — press Ling Chen. Woman in white — finish the light user. Yue — hold the sound user. Mei — keep tracking the third. Abby — aerial support. Push back. Now."

"Copy." The team acknowledged. Seven voices. Seven who pushed.

Mark Jordan surged.

The Black Hell Flame roaring.

The black fire that was hotter — much hotter — than Yu Chen's heat. The flame that consumed. Yu Chen retreated. The uncle whose heat was cooling, who could not match the Black Hell Flame. The uncle who faltered.

Min-joo closed.

The Shadow that moved fast. The Asura Hell Katana that flashed. Hua Chen cornered. The aunt whose shadow was thinning, who could not escape the only Shadow user in the compound. The aunt who faltered.

Anna pressed. The knife that flashed.

The CQC that was fast. Ling Chen overwhelmed. The sister whose force field was diminishing, who could not keep up with the Preta-trained close-range fighter. The sister who faltered.

The woman in white reached the light user. The katanas that flashed. The regeneration that healed. The light user — who had no close-range defense, who panicked — fell. The first of the seven to fall.

The woman in white's katana through his shoulder. Not dead — but down. The regeneration user who did not kill. Who incapacitated.

"One down." Gabriel reported from above. "The light user is down. The woman in white — holding position over him."

"One down." Jae-min confirmed. Seven against six. The math shifting.

Wei Chen saw the light user fall. The cousin whose face changed. The cousin who calculated. Seven against six. The counters pushing. The four known tiring. The sound user blocked. The invisible assassin tracked. The light user down.

"Fall back." Wei Chen declared, his voice flat. The command that was not a command. The command that was retreat. "Fall back. Regroup. The three — to me. Fall back."

The four known disengaged.

Wei Chen's gravity field dropped. Ling Chen's force field dropped. Yu Chen's heat dropped. Hua Chen's shadow dropped. The four who retreated.

The sound user who retreated. The invisible assassin who became visible. The third who appeared — twenty meters away. The third whose face was revealed. A man. Young. Younger than the four known. Twenty-five, maybe. The man whose power was invisibility. The man whose face was afraid.

The seven retreated. Fifty meters. A hundred. The seven who walked backward, facing the Strike Team, not running, retreating. The seven who regrouped at the south end of the field. Two hundred meters from the wall.

"Abby — status." Jae-min commanded.

"They're regrouping." Gabriel reported from above. "Two hundred meters south. All seven. The light user is mobile. The woman in white's katana went through his shoulder, not his spine. He's wounded but mobile. The seven are regrouping. Talking. Wei Chen is directing."

"Directing." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who watched. The captain whose spatial awareness swept the seven. Two hundred meters. Regrouping. The captain who breathed. The captain who had held.

"Hold positions." Jae-min commanded. "Do not advance. Let them regroup. Let them decide. If they retreat — we let them go. If they advance — we hold again."

"Copy." The team acknowledged. Seven who held. Seven who were tired. But holding.

"Mei — casualties."

[Mei]: "Strike Team — no casualties." Mei reported, her voice clinical. "Yue — wounded. Left arm. Marble compromised. Regenerating. The woman in white — minor cuts. Regenerating. Anna — cut on forehead. Minor. Everyone else — intact."

She paused.

[Mei]: "The seven — the light user wounded. Shoulder. Mobility reduced. Everyone else — intact. But fatigued. All seven are fatigued. The fundamental-tier output is depleted. They need rest. They cannot sustain another engagement at full power."

"They need rest." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who calculated. The seven who were fatigued. The seven who had pushed for thirty-five minutes at fundamental-tier output. The seven who were running out. The seven who could not sustain.

"They'll either retreat or send for reinforcements." Jae-min analyzed. "Mei — Federation communications. Any movement from Taipei."

[Mei]: "Monitoring. No new communications. No ship movement. No aircraft." Mei reported, her voice flat. "The conventional forces — Manusya, Naraka, Tiryagyoni, Preta — are still in Taipei. Still mobilizing. They have not deployed. The seven are alone. Still alone."

"Alone." Jae-min confirmed. The seven who were alone. The seven who were fatigued. The seven who were retreating. Or regrouping. The captain who waited.

The field. The snow. The seven who held. The seven who were tired but holding. The wall behind them. The compound behind the wall. The hospital behind the compound.

Ji-yoo in the hospital. The ninth in Ji-yoo's belly. Min-joo who fought for both.

The seven who held. For the nine. For the next generation. For the compound.

The seven who held. And waited.

Ji-yoo lay on the bed. The twin who was not fighting. The twin who was carrying the ninth. The twin whose hand was on her stomach, on the six-week-old life inside her. The twin who listened.

The comms were open. Jae-min had left the channel open — for Ji-yoo. So she could hear. So she would know. The twin who lay in the hospital bed, beside Marie, beside Little Jae-min, and listened to the battle through the comms.

She had heard everything. The engagement. The counters holding. The light user. The sound user. The invisible assassin. Mei's mind scan. The push back. The light user going down. The seven retreating.

She had heard Min-joo's voice — tight, focused, the Asura captain who hunted Hua Chen and tracked the invisible assassin. The voice that said for Ji-yoo, for the baby, for both. The voice that was still alive. Still fighting. Still here.

"He's okay." Marie murmured, her hand on Ji-yoo's arm. The auntie who knew. The auntie who heard. The auntie whose husband was also out there, on the wall, the Olympus Defense commander who held the perimeter while the Strike Team fought. "Min-joo is okay. He's still fighting. He's still here."

"Still here." Ji-yoo repeated, her voice quiet. The twin whose dark eyes were on the ceiling. The twin whose hand was on her stomach. The twin who waited.

Little Jae-min stirred in the bassinet. Six days old. Making a gurgle, his fists uncurling.

The baby who did not know about the war.

The baby who did not know about the seven.

The baby who did not know that his cousin's twin was lying in a hospital bed, pregnant, listening to a battle through a comms channel, waiting for the voice of the father of her child to come through the speaker again.

"Tell me about the baby." Ji-yoo whispered, her voice quiet. The twin who needed to think about something else. Something other than the battle. Something other than Min-joo. Something other than the war.

"The baby?" Marie asked.

"The ninth. Tell me — what will it be. Boy or girl."

"I don't know." Marie answered, smiling. "Alessia hasn't done an ultrasound yet. Six weeks is early. Too early for the Life Sense to determine gender. The heartbeat is there. Faint. But the gender — another few weeks."

"Another few weeks." Ji-yoo repeated. The twin who calculated. Another few weeks of morning sickness. Of not fighting. Of lying in a hospital bed while Min-joo fought.

"It'll pass." Marie assured her, her voice warm. "The first trimester. The nausea. The dizziness. All of it. By week twelve — you'll feel normal again. By week twenty — you'll feel the baby move. By week thirty — you'll feel like a whale. And by week forty — you'll feel like you're dying."

She paused, her smile widening.

"And then the baby comes." Marie finished. "And you forget everything. Because the baby is here."

"Here." Ji-yoo repeated, her hand on her stomach. The twin who felt. The faint heartbeat. The life inside her.

The ninth.

Through the comms — Min-joo's voice. The Asura captain who reported. "They're regrouping. Two hundred meters south. All seven. The light user is wounded but mobile. The four known are fatigued. The three are cautious. The invisible one is visible now. Mei's mind scan compromised the invisibility. The third is afraid."

"Min-joo." Ji-yoo whispered, hearing his voice through the comms. The twin who heard. The twin whose dark eyes were wet. The twin whose hand was on her stomach. The twin who waited.

"He heard you." Marie murmured, smiling. The auntie whose dark eyes were warm. The auntie who knew that Min-joo could not hear through the comms. That the channel was one-way. That Ji-yoo was talking to a man who could not hear her.

But the auntie who let her talk. Because talking was better than silence. Because hope was better than fear.

"He can't hear me." Ji-yoo breathed, her voice breaking. The twin who knew. "The channel is one-way. He can't hear me."

"He can feel you." Marie countered, her voice certain. "He knows you're here. He knows you're safe. He knows the baby is safe. That's enough for him. That's enough to fight for."

"Enough." Ji-yoo whispered. The twin who held. Her hand on her stomach. Her dark eyes on the ceiling. Her ears on the comms.

The twin who waited. For Min-joo's voice. For the battle to end. For the war to end. For the baby.

The ninth. Six weeks. Due Day five hundred and sixty-nine. Months from now. After the war. After everything.

After everything — the baby.

Day 373. 06:00 hours.

The field.

One hour in.

The seven had not advanced. The seven who were regrouping — two hundred meters south, at the edge of the field, at the tree line. The seven who were talking. Deciding.

The seven whose fatigue was visible even from two hundred meters. The seven whose fundamental-tier output had been depleted by thirty-five minutes of sustained combat against counters.

"Abby — status." Jae-min commanded.

"They're still regrouping." Gabriel reported from above. The wife who flew, whose golden eyes saw everything. "Wei Chen is directing. Talking to the three. The light user is being treated. Someone is bandaging his shoulder. The sound user is sitting. Resting. The invisible one is visible. Standing behind Wei Chen."

She paused.

"The four known are sitting." Gabriel continued, her voice dropping. "On the snow. Resting. They're done. They're not advancing. Not today."

"Not today." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who heard. The captain who processed. The seven who were done. The seven who had pushed for thirty-five minutes at fundamental-tier and had nothing left. The seven who could not break through. The seven who failed.

"They failed." Anna declared, her voice quiet. The Right Hand who stood beside Jae-min. The woman whose knife was in her hand. The woman whose forehead was still bleeding. The woman who had fought Ling Chen to a standstill. "The seven failed. They didn't break the wall. They didn't break the Strike Team. They didn't break anything."

"They failed." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who stood. The captain whose void tear was closed. The captain whose spatial awareness was passive. The captain who was tired. The captain who had held two fundamentals for thirty-five minutes and who was spent.

But standing. Still standing.

"Mei — Federation communications." Jae-min commanded.

[Mei]: "No new communications. No ship movement. No reinforcements." Mei reported, her voice flat. "The conventional forces are still in Taipei. The seven are alone. Still alone. And they are retreating."

"Retreating." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who watched. The seven who were standing up. The seven who were turning. The seven who were walking south. Toward the tree line. Toward the coast. Toward the ship that had brought them.

The seven who were leaving.

"Let them go." Jae-min commanded. "Do not pursue. Let them go."

"Copy." The team acknowledged. Seven who stood. Seven who watched. Seven who let the seven go.

The seven walked south. Through the snow. Through the field. Toward the coast. Toward the ship.

The seven who had come to burn the compound. To kill the void captain. To take Anna. To eliminate the threat. The seven who had failed. The seven who walked away. Wounded. Fatigued. Broken.

The light user — shoulder bandaged, arm limp, walking with help from the sound user. Yu Chen — limping, the heat that had been his power now just residual warmth. Hua Chen — limping, the shadow that had been her power now just residual dark. Ling Chen — walking, the force that had been her power now just residual anger.

Wei Chen — walking last. The cousin whose face was still. The cousin whose gravity had been absorbed by the void. The cousin who had never encountered a power that could absorb his. The cousin who did not know what to do.

The invisible one — walking beside Wei Chen. The man whose face was afraid. The man whose invisibility had been compromised by the Mind Control. The man who had never been seen. The man who was seen now. The man who was afraid.

The seven who walked south. Away from the compound. Away from the wall. Away from the Strike Team. Away from the void captain who had held two fundamentals. The void captain who had Time. The void captain who could not be beaten.

The seven who failed.

Day 373. 06:30 hours.

The compound.

The south wall.

The parapet.

The aftermath.

Jae-min stood on the parapet. The captain who stood. The captain whose dark eyes were on the south. On the field. On the snow. On the seven who were gone.

The ship that had been on the horizon was gone. Sailed south. Back to Taipei. Back to the cage. Back to the dying machine.

The seven had failed. The compound had held. The wall had not been touched. The Strike Team had not been broken. No casualties. Yue — wounded, regenerating. The woman in white — minor cuts, regenerating. Anna — cut on forehead, minor. Everyone else — intact. Tired. Spent. But intact.

"Mei." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "Federation communications. Status."

[Mei]: "The seven have boarded the ship. The ship is departing Manila Bay. Course — north. Back to Taipei." Mei reported, her voice clinical. "The seven are retreating. The conventional forces — Manusya, Naraka, Tiryagyoni, Preta — have been ordered to stand down. The mobilization is cancelled. The Federation is standing down."

"Standing down." Jae-min confirmed. The captain who heard. The captain who processed. The Federation was standing down. The seven had failed. The Federation had retreated.

"The war —" Anna started, her voice quiet. The Right Hand who stood beside Jae-min on the parapet.

"The war is not over." Jae-min declared, his voice quiet and certain. "The seven failed. The Federation retreated. But the Chen Family will not accept failure. The Chen Family will send more. Or the Chen Family will come themselves."

He paused, his dark eyes on the horizon.

"The Chen Family's machine is dying. Three months. Maybe less." Jae-min continued, his voice dropping. "The Chen Family is desperate. Desperate people do desperate things. The seven was the first attempt. It will not be the last."

Anna was quiet for a moment. The Right Hand who knew the Federation. The Right Hand who had been Rose McDowell's vice captain. The Right Hand who knew how the Federation operated — how Rose operated.

"Rose will come." Anna stated, her voice quiet and certain. Not a guess. Not speculation. The voice of a woman who had served under Rose McDowell for years. Who knew the captain. Who knew how Rose thought. How Rose operated. "The seven failed. Rose will not accept that. Rose will not wait for the Chen Family to send another force. Rose will come herself."

"Rose." Jae-min repeated, his dark eyes on Anna.

"Rose is — possessive." Anna continued, her voice steady despite the cut on her forehead, despite the fatigue, despite the battle. "I was her vice captain. Her Right Hand. The compound took me. The void captain took me. Rose does not lose what is hers. Rose will come. Not for the Chen Family. Not for the cage. For me. For — what she considers hers."

"She'll come alone." Jae-min measured, reading Anna's certainty.

"Rose does not trust the Chen Family." Anna confirmed. "Rose does not trust the Federation. Rose trusts Rose. Rose will come alone. With the twenty-three hunters. Maybe. Or alone alone. Rose is — unpredictable. But Rose will come."

"Then we prepare." Jae-min declared, his voice quiet and certain. "The Chen Family will send more. Rose will come. The war is not over. But today — today we held. Today the seven failed. Today the nine are safe."

"The nine." Anna confirmed, her voice quiet. The Right Hand who counted. The Right Hand who added. Ji-yoo's baby. The ninth.

"Today — enough." Jae-min declared, his dark eyes on the horizon. The horizon that was empty. For now.

The snow fell. The charcoal sky. The field. The wall. The compound. The hospital. Ji-yoo. The ninth. Min-joo. The seven who held. The seven who were tired but standing.

The compound held. The wall held. The Strike Team held. The nine were safe. For now.

For now — the compound held.

And Rose McDowell would come.

But not today.

Today — the compound held.

Today — the seven failed.

Today — the nine were safe.

Today — enough.

The snow fell.

The compound held.
