Chapter 298 - The Federation

Day 218. 04:30 hours.

The compound.

The charcoal sky.

Jae-min was on the wall when the Federation came.

Not the advance party. Not the twelve. Not the scouts or the warband or the regionals. The Federation. The full response. The thing that Yi Chen had predicted and that the twelve had accelerated and that the compound had been building toward for eight days.

The spatial awareness swept — three kilometers south. Signatures. Not twelve. Not forty-seven. Not thirty-four.

Hundreds.

"Mei." Jae-min addressed into the comms, his hand finding the parapet. "Count."

[Mei]: "Active sweep." Mei's voice came back in two seconds — the data genius, the violet-blue eyes on the monitors, Chocho's tail tight. "Captain. Count — one hundred and eight. One hundred and eight Enhanced signatures. Moving north. South to north. Formation — military. Column. Three files. ETA at current pace — ninety minutes."

"One hundred and eight." Jae-min repeated, his dark eyes on the south horizon. "Composition."

[Mei]: "Three groups." Mei reported, her fingers moving on the keyboard. "First group — thirty-six signatures. Signature B and C. Disciplined formation. Military. This is Deva — the main force. The ones who did not defect."

[Mei]: "Second group — thirty-six signatures. Mixed. Signature B, Signature C. Female signatures dominant. This is Preta. Rose McDowell's hunters."

[Mei]: "Third group — thirty-six signatures. Signature B and C. Interrogation formation. This is Naraka. Vishnu Aashish's group."

[Mei]: "Plus." Mei paused, her violet-blue eyes narrowing. "One signature at the center of the column. Signature A. Fundamental. Large. I cannot identify. The signature is broad. Expansive. Not space. Not gravity. Not shadow. Something else."

"Ching-te Xu." Yi Chen's voice came through the comms from the Atrium — the heir, the golden eyes filing. "The fundamental at the center is Ching-te Xu. The puppet. The Chen Family's figurehead. His power is Authority. Command enforcement. He can give orders that Enhanced feel compelled to obey. Not mind control — authority. The power to make others follow."

"Authority." Jae-min measured, his jaw tightening. The fundamental who could make others obey. The puppet who was the Chen Family's weapon.

"The twelve who returned — the ones who reported." Yi Chen continued. "They told the Chen Family. The Chen Family accelerated. Ching-te Xu is here. The full response is here. Day 8."

"Day 8." Jae-min confirmed. Eight days. Not ten. Eight.

"Battle stations." Jae-min ordered, his voice carrying the register that ended the countdown and started the war. "All hands. Battle stations. The compound holds."

The compound moved — the household that had been sleeping becoming a war machine in ninety seconds.

Rico is at the north gate with the M4. Marie was beside him for one second — her hand finding his, nearly seven months pregnant, before the uncle went to the wall and the wife went to the hospital.

Alessia to Marie's mansion — the hospital, the ballroom, the surgical ward. Just over two weeks pregnant, the glow shifting to trauma white. The doctor who was ready.

Hua to the kitchen — nearly six months pregnant with Eun-hae, the belly rounding under the apron. The chef who would feed the war. The kitchen did not stop.

Elaine — nearly fourteen weeks pregnant — to the Command Deck with Mei. The Gedo operative, the fundamental, the woman whose cosmic plasma would burn.

Paolo at the east gate — the ice spear, the Sailor Moon doll, his four wives who were nearly three months pregnant moved to the hospital wing. Paolo, who held the door.

Aiko in the armory. Mark Jordan in the Heracles frame — the amber eyes glowing behind the visor, the Ifrit's Hell Katana at his side, the Black Hell Flame ready. Mei is in her wheelchair with Chocho. Haitao. James. Chen Wei and Ji-hoon Park.

Min-joo at the Asura garrison — the Asura Hell Katana, the shadow constructs deploying, the eleven Wraiths from the warband ready.

Ji-yoo at the east wall — the twin, the gravity and force, Soulcleaver in her chest. Min-joo's hand found hers for one second before they separated to their positions.

One second.

The promise. Be careful.I will be careful.

Gabriel at altitude — the solar wind igniting, the golden light rising into the charcoal sky. The flyer who was permanent now. The sixth.

Jennifer at the courtyard's edge — the Omni-Mind, the synchronizer, the blue eyes reaching. Touching Gabriel's mind. Touching Ji-yoo's mind. The woman who would say now.

Yi Chen at the south gate — the Weapons Gate open, the golden gates shimmering, the floating weapons. The mobile reserve. Sakura at his right. The twelve Deva defectors who would face their former comrades.

Sera in the courtyard — the lightning elemental, the silver eyes, the electrical cocoon crackling. The woman whose power was complete.

The woman in white at the east wall — her post, both katanas drawn, the regeneration humming, the green eyes on the south. The sentinel who had held the east wall for five months.

Vasquez on the wall — her hands on the earth, the wall that was hers. And on that wall — Corporal Reyes at the north watchtower. One arm. The magazine she had reloaded with one hand. The corporal who held.

"Strike team." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "Deployment. South wall. South gate is the contact point. Me, Ji-yoo, Yue, Mark Jordan, the woman in white. Yi Chen — mobile reserve. Abby — air. Jennifer — synchronizer. Min-joo — Asura garrison holds north and south flanks."

"Copy." The strike team echoed.

"The spatial storage collects at the moment." Jae-min declared, his voice hard. "Every kill. Every essence. Every gold wisp. No watching. No filing during combat. The Asura Hell Katana and the spatial storage together. Min-joo takes the souls. I take the essences. Both. At the moment. The complete harvest."

"The complete harvest." Min-joo confirmed, his black eyes steady.

"The combination." Jae-min addressed Gabriel, Ji-yoo, and Jennifer. "Abby dives. Ji-yoo pushes. Jennifer synchronizes. Now means now."

"The three." Gabriel confirmed from altitude.

"The three." Ji-yoo confirmed from the east wall.

"The three." Jennifer confirmed from the courtyard.

"One hundred and eight." Jae-min addressed the compound. "One hundred and eight Enhanced. The Federation's full response. Deva. Preta. Naraka. Ching-te Xu. The puppet with the Authority. The soldiers who will fight because they are compelled. The hunters who will kill because Rose orders. The interrogators who will try."

"They will try." Jae-min continued, his dark eyes sweeping the south. "And they will fail. Because the compound holds. Four soulbound weapons. Ten fundamentals. A divine tier. A combination. A spatial storage that collects. And the compound has the people. The people are the reason. The people hold."

"The people hold." The compound echoed through the comms — the household, the Deva defectors, the coalition, the Asura garrison, the Vanguard Six. One voice.

[Mei]: "One hour." Mei reported. "ETA one hour."

"One hour." Jae-min confirmed. "Prepare."

— • • • —

Day 218. 05:30 hours.

The south wall.

The Federation appeared on the south horizon — one hundred and eight Enhanced signatures moving in military column. Three files. Deva on the left. Preta on the right. Naraka in the center. And at the center of the Naraka — Ching-te Xu. The puppet. The fundamental whose signature was Authority.

The column stopped at five hundred meters. The formation spreading — Deva deploying left, Preta deploying right, Naraka holding center. The military precision of a force that had trained together for years.

Ching-te Xu stepped forward — short, thin, the face of a bureaucrat who had never fought. The face of a man whose power was not combat but obedience.

"Compound." Ching-te Xu's voice carried across the five hundred meters, amplified, projected — the voice of a man who spoke and expected the world to listen.

The voice that pressed.

Jae-min felt it. The compulsion. The urge to listen. To obey. The Authority that was not mind control but was heavier — the weight of a command that the body wanted to follow.

The compound felt it. The Baseline soldiers on the wall — the coalition — whose bodies wanted to kneel. To obey. To put down their weapons and listen.

"Resist." Jae-min ordered through the comms, his jaw set against the pressure. "Ching-te Xu — his power is compulsion. Feel it. Acknowledge it. Do not obey it. The spatial storage anchors me. The Authority is pressure. Hold against the pressure."

"Hold." The compound echoed — the soldiers on the wall whose bodies wanted to kneel, holding. The coalition whose hands shook on their rifles, holding.

"Compound." Ching-te Xu called again. "Surrender. The Chen Family orders the surrender of the compound. All Enhanced. All assets. All weapons. Surrender and be integrated. Resist and be destroyed."

"The compound does not surrender." Jae-min answered from the wall, his dark eyes on Ching-te Xu, his body steady against the Authority because the spatial storage — the space and time — anchored him. The Authority was pressure. The space was ground. The ground did not kneel.

"Then be destroyed." Ching-te Xu declared — the command rippling through the Federation's column, the Authority compelling the one hundred and eight to fight. Not because they chose.

Because the Authority made them.

The Federation charged.

One hundred and eight Enhanced moving as one.

The Authority compelling.

Deva on the left — thirty-six soldiers with weapons and powers. Preta on the right — thirty-six hunters, all female. Naraka in the center — thirty-six interrogators. Ching-te Xu behind them all.

"Strike team. Engage." Jae-min ordered.

Mark Jordan rose in the Heracles frame — the amber eyes behind the visor, the Ifrit's Hell Katana drawn, the Black Hell Flame erupting in a wall of black fire that swept across the south approach.

The fire consuming the front of the column — ten Enhanced screaming, burning, the fire that consumed light consuming them, the ten falling, the ten erased.

But the Federation was not the warband. The Federation was trained. The column split — Deva going left, Preta going right, Naraka pushing through the center.

The Naraka whose bodies were hardened against damage. The Naraka who walked through the Black Hell Flame the way Bagyo had walked through it.

"The Naraka are resistant to the flame." Mark Jordan reported, his amber eyes widening behind the visor. "The conditioning. The interrogation training. Their bodies are hardened."

"Yue. The Naraka. The dimensional edge. The joints." Jae-min ordered.

Yue blinked into the Naraka center — the marble, the jian, the instantaneous displacement.

Yue appearing among the Naraka, the jian singing, the dimensional edge finding the joints and tendons and gaps that the fire couldn't reach. The Naraka who were resistant to fire but not resistant to the edge that cut space.

The first Naraka's neck parting — the dimensional edge severing the spine, the head separating, the body dropping. The blood spraying in a red arc that froze in midair, the crystals hanging like rubies before the snow swallowed them.

And the gold. The first gold wisp — rising from the dead Naraka. Jae-min felt it. The spatial storage opening. The pull engaging. The gold wisp drifting toward Jae-min, entering the space between spaces, joining the vault. One. The vault that had been empty — no longer empty.

"One. The lesson works. Collect at the moment. No watching. No filing. Pull. Every kill. Every gold wisp." Jae-min registered, already moving to the next kill.

"Now." Jennifer breathed — the Omni-Mind, the synchronizer, the fourth tag touching Gabriel's mind and Ji-yoo's mind simultaneously.

Ji-yoo pushed. The gravity inversion hit the Deva left flank — twelve Enhanced launched upward at twelve Gs, rocketing into the charcoal sky, the snow trailing, the bodies spinning.

Gabriel dove. Mach 1. Mach 1.2. Mach 1.5. The solar wind accelerating the descent. The flyer coming down at the twelve Deva who were rising.

The closing speed. The combination. The impact — twelve Deva soldiers disintegrating in a shockwave that cracked the earth. The solar wind and the gravity meeting. The two opposites combining. The thing that neither could do alone.

Twelve gold wisps rising from the scattered remains. Jae-min pulling. Twelve essences entering the vault. Thirteen total. The vault filling.

"Yi Chen. The Deva right flank." Jae-min ordered.

Yi Chen deployed — the Weapons Gate open, the golden gates shimmering, thirty spears floating forward and accelerating into the Deva right flank. The spears pinning. The mobile reserve creating a gap instead of filling one.

Sera struck — the lightning elemental, the electrical cocoon weaponized, the lightning arcing from her fingers into the Preta hunters.

The assassins who were fast and silent but not resistant to lightning.

The Preta falling, the electrical discharge cooking their nervous systems from the inside, the bodies convulsing, the eyes bursting, the skin blackening where the lightning entered and exited. The gold rising.

Jae-min pulling. The vault filling.

Twenty. Twenty-five. Thirty.

Min-joo — the Asura Hell Katana cutting through the Naraka center. The edge that cut flesh and soul.

The first Wraith of the battle — a Deva sergeant.

The soul pulled into the katana, the man's eyes going wide as the blade severed not just his neck but his essence, the soul tearing free from the dying body with a scream that was not audible but felt — the scream of a sinner being trapped.

The twelfth Wraith. The katana stronger. The damage greater. The scaling. The weapon that grew with every kill.

And the gold — the Deva sergeant's essence rising from the headless body. Jae-min pulling. The soul going to the katana. The essence going to the vault. The two halves collected. The complete harvest.

"Count." Jae-min addressed between kills.

[Mei]: "Forty-seven down." Mei reported. "Sixty-one remaining. The Federation is breaking. The Deva left flank routed. The Preta right flank scattered. The Naraka center holding but falling."

"The Authority." Yi Chen reported through the comms. "Ching-te Xu. He is pressing. The Authority is compelling the remaining soldiers to fight. They don't want to fight — they are compelled. The soldiers who would break — the Authority holds them."

"Ching-te Xu." Jae-min measured, his dark eyes on the center of the column where the puppet stood. "I need to reach him. If I get close enough — the spatial storage can disrupt the Authority. Space and command. The two forces. The storage anchors me. The Authority presses. If I reach Ching-te Xu — I break the Authority."

"Through the Naraka." Rico noted from the north gate. "Through thirty-six interrogators."

"Through." Jae-min confirmed. "Strike team — with me. Yue. Mark Jordan. The woman in white. We push through the Naraka center. We reach Ching-te Xu. Ji-yoo — hold the left. Abby — air support. Jennifer — synchronize. Yi Chen — hold the right. Min-joo — the center with me."

"Copy." The strike team echoed.

Jae-min moved — over the wall, into the snow, into the Federation. The Glocks drawn. The Wormhole Guided Bullets loaded. The spatial storage collecting every gold wisp from every kill.

Min-joo beside him — the Asura Hell Katana drawn, the shadow blade cutting, the Wraiths deploying.

The twelve Shadow Wraiths tearing through the Naraka.

The shadow army growing with every kill. Every sinner killed. Every soul trapped. Every Wraith adding to the katana's damage. The Nevermore. The scaling.

The two together — the gold rising from the dead, the souls pulled into the blade, the two halves collected. The vault filling. The katana growing.

The woman in white at Jae-min's flank — both katanas, the regeneration, the green eyes. The sentinel who had held the east wall for five months and was now in the field. The blades finding the joints. The regeneration healing the wounds the Naraka inflicted. The walking wall.

Yue blinking through the Naraka — the jian, the dimensional edge, the marble woman appearing and disappearing and cutting.

Mark Jordan in the Heracles frame — the blade, not the flame, the steel that worked where the fire didn't. The frame's enhanced strength and armor absorbing the Naraka's strikes.

They pushed through. The Naraka center breaking. The interrogators falling — heads separating, spines severing, the blood spraying and freezing, the gold rising, the vault filling. Forty-eight. Forty-nine. Fifty. The katana growing. Thirteen Wraiths. Fourteen. Fifteen.

And then — Ching-te Xu.

The puppet stood behind the Naraka. The thin man. The bureaucrat's face. The fundamental whose power was Authority. The man who had never fought. The man whose power was the command that kept the Federation fighting.

Jae-min reached him.

The spatial storage and the Authority met. The space and time humming under Jae-min's sternum. The command pressing from Ching-te Xu. The two forces. The two fundamentals. Space and Authority.

The Authority pressed — the compulsion, the urge to stop, to kneel, to obey. The weight of a command that the body wanted to follow.

The space pushed back. The space that held. The time that held. The ground that did not kneel.

The Authority cracked.

"The ground doesn't kneel. The Authority is wind. The wind doesn't move the ground." Jae-min anchored, his dark eyes on Ching-te Xu's face — the puppet's eyes widening, the bureaucrat who had never been resisted, the man whose face went white.

"No." Jae-min declared — one word, the captain, the man who said no to the Authority.

Ching-te Xu stumbled. The Authority cracking wider. The Federation soldiers who had been compelled — feeling the crack. The compulsion weakening. The soldiers who had been fighting because the Authority made them — the soldiers who were now stopping.

"Stop." Jae-min addressed the Federation — not Authority, not compulsion, the captain's voice. A choice. "The Authority is broken. The puppet is done. Stop. Choose. Fight or stop."

The Federation stopped. Not all. Not at once. But the soldiers who had been compelled — the ones who had been fighting because Ching-te Xu's Authority made them — those stopped. The Deva soldiers who stopped. The Preta hunters who stopped. The Naraka interrogators who stopped.

Not all. Some — the loyal ones, the believers, the ones who fought by choice — those kept fighting. But the ones who had been compelled — those stopped. And the stopping was the beginning of the end.

Ching-te Xu stumbled again. The Authority broken. The puppet who had never been resisted. The thin man turned. Ran. The bureaucrat who ran from the captain who had said no.

Jae-min let him run — the captain who had learned from Wang Li. Let the messenger run. Let the puppet carry the story. The story that the compound could not be compelled. The story that the Federation broke.

"Count." Jae-min addressed.

[Mei]: "Sixty-two down." Mei reported. "Forty-six remaining. Thirty-two have stopped fighting. Fourteen still fighting. The loyal ones."

"The fourteen." Jae-min ordered. "Strike team."

The strike team moved — the fourteen, the loyal ones, the believers, the ones who fought by choice.

The last.

Yue cutting. Mark Jordan in the frame. The woman in white. Ji-yoo pushing. Gabriel diving.

The combination.

The fourteen falling — the dimensional edge severing spines, the Black Hell Flame consuming the ones the flame could reach, the gravity push launching the ones Ji-yoo caught, the solar wind diving on the ones Gabriel struck. The gold rising. The vault filling. Every kill. Every essence. The complete harvest.

[Mei]: "Fourteen down." Mei reported. "Zero remaining. The Federation broken."

"Casualties." Jae-min addressed.

[Mei]: "Compound: three wounded. Zero killed." Mei reported. "Coalition: two wounded. Zero killed. Asura garrison: one wounded. Zero killed. Deva defectors: one wounded. Zero killed. Federation: sixty-two killed. Forty-six surrendered. Ching-te Xu fled."

"Zero killed." Jae-min repeated, his dark eyes closing for one second. One hundred and eight engaged. Zero lost. Three wounded. The compound that held.

"The vault." Jae-min addressed, his voice shifting. "Mei. The vault."

[Mei]: "Captain. The vault. Sixty-two essences collected. Sixty-two gold. The vault is replenished."Mei's violet-blue eyes left the monitor. Chocho's tail loosening.

"Replenished." Jae-min repeated, something loosening in his chest. The vault that had been empty for eight days. The lesson learned from the warband — collect at the moment, no watching, no filing. The lesson executed. Sixty-two essences. Sixty-two gold wisps pulled from sixty-two dead. The spatial storage that had failed at the warband now working. The complete harvest — Min-joo taking the souls, Jae-min taking the essences. Both. At the moment. Together.

"The vault is replenished." Jae-min confirmed to the compound through the comms. "Sixty-two essences. The spatial storage collected. At the moment. Every kill. The lesson worked."

[Mei]: "The lesson worked." Mei echoed from the Command Deck, her violet-blue eyes on the monitors. "Sixty-two essences. Zero lost. Zero dissipated. The spatial storage was at every kill. The lesson from the warband — executed."

"Uncle." Jae-min addressed through the comms. "The wounded."

"Three wounded. Stable. Alessia is treating." Rico confirmed. "Zero critical. The compound held. Zero killed."

"Zero killed." Jae-min repeated, his dark eyes opening. The south field. The bodies. Sixty-two Federation soldiers. Sixty-two essences — already collected. The bodies that were empty. The flesh that held nothing now. The spirit halves gone — in the vault. The gold that was the compound's.

"The compound holds." Jae-min declared, his voice carrying the captain's register. "The Federation is broken. One hundred and eight. Engaged. Broken. Sixty-two killed. Forty-six surrendered. Zero compound killed. The compound holds."

"The compound holds." The compound echoed — the voices overlapping through the comms. The household. The Deva defectors. The coalition. The Asura garrison. The Vanguard Six. The twelve. One voice.

The snow fell. The compound held. The Federation was broken. The vault was replenished. Sixty-two essences. Gold. The compound's resource. The dead's gift. The harvest that had worked — the lesson learned, the lesson executed, the void at the kills, the gold rising, the vault filling.

Eight pregnant women in the compound.

Hua nearly six months pregnant with Eun-hae.

Marie nearly seven months pregnant with Little Jae-min.

Alessia just over two weeks pregnant with the fundamental baby.

Elaine nearly fourteen weeks pregnant.

Carmen, Esperanza, Sofia, Lina — all nearly three months pregnant.

Eight bellies. Eight children. The next generation that the compound held. The next generation that the Federation could not take.

And on the north wall — in the watchtower — a corporal held a magazine in one hand. The left hand. The only hand. The corporal who had heard the battle.

The corporal who had held the watchtower while the compound fought.

The corporal who did not know what the vault held. The corporal who did not know what was coming.

The snow fell. The compound held. The Federation was broken. The vault was replenished.

The compound held.
