Chapter 295 - The Harvest

Day 214. 07:00 hours.

The south field.

The bodies were still there.

Twenty-two of them were cooling in the snow — the warband that had charged the south gate yesterday.

The blood had frozen black. The center group lay headless where Min-joo's blade had passed.

The others scattered where the strike team had broken them apart.

The compound had not collected the bodies yesterday. The compound had stood down, eaten, and slept. The bodies had waited.

Jae-min stood at the south gate with the spatial awareness reaching into the field.

He was looking for essence — the gold wisps that pulled free from dead Enhanced at the moment of death.

The Snake Woman's essence had been gold. The sixty-seven raiders had been gold. All essence was gold, regardless of tier or type.

The vault that held them had been depleted by three bestowals on Day 197 — Gabriel, Jennifer, Mei.

The vault needed refilling.

Twenty-two dead Enhanced.

Twenty-two essences.

Twenty-two gold wisps.

Jae-min opened the gate and walked into the field.

The spatial awareness searched body after body.

The first corpse — a sinner from the center group, headless, killed by the Asura Hell Katana.

Jae-min reached for the essence the way he always reached — the spatial storage opening, the pull engaging.

Nothing.

No gold.

No wisp.

No essence.

The body was empty.

Not empty of blood or flesh — empty of power. The Enhanced signature that should have lingered in the dead tissue was gone.

Dissipated.

Scattered into the atmosphere and dissolved.

Jae-min moved to the second body.

Nothing. The third. Nothing. The fourth, the fifth, the sixth — body after body, the same result.

Empty.

The essences that should have been here were gone.

Twenty-two dead Enhanced.

Zero essences remaining.

"I missed them. During the battle, I was watching Min-joo manifest the Asura Hell Katana. The weapon came from his chest. The Wraiths deployed. The resonance hit and I — I stopped collecting. I was watching the fourth soulbound weapon appear, and the essences rose and found nothing pulling, and they scattered. Twenty-two essences gone because I was watching instead of working." Jae-min realized, his hands gripping the gate frame.

"Uncle." Jae-min addressed into the comms, his voice flat. "South field. The essences are gone."

[Rico]: "Gone?" Rico's voice came back. "What do you mean gone?"

"Dissipated." Jae-min answered, his jaw tightening. "Essence has to be collected at the moment of death. The moment. Not after. I didn't collect during the battle. The Asura Hell Katana manifestation caught my attention. Twenty-two essences dissipated overnight. Lost."

[Rico]: "How?" Rico pressed.

"I was watching Min-joo." Jae-min admitted that the words were rough. "The Asura Hell Katana manifested. The weapon, the Wraiths, and the Trinity are complete. I was watching the fourth soulbound weapon appear, and I wasn't collecting. The essences rose, and nothing was pulling, and they scattered."

[Rico]: "You were distracted." Rico stated — not judging, just stating. Thirty years of military service had taught him that distraction happened and distraction cost.

"I was distracted." Jae-min confirmed. "The mistake is mine. I knew the rule. Essence at the moment of death. I didn't follow the rule. Twenty-two essences. Lost."

[Rico]: "You couldn't have done both." Rico countered, practical as always. "The Asura Hell Katana was the first soulbound weapon manifestation you'd witnessed from outside. You needed to see it. The filing was necessary."

"The filing cost twenty-two essences." Jae-min answered, his dark eyes on the empty field. "Next time — the void collects at the moment. No watching. No filing during combat. The Asura Hell Katana and the spatial storage work together. Min-joo takes the souls. I take the essences. Both at the moment. Together."

[Rico]: "Together." Rico confirmed. "The complete harvest."

"The complete harvest." Jae-min agreed, turning back toward the gate. "The narra table. Tonight. The household needs to know."

— • • • —

Day 214. 19:00 hours.

The Peacock.

The Atrium.

The narra table.

The household was assembled.

Jae-min was at the head with Alessia on his lap. Rico was on his right. Jennifer with the Omni-Mind. Yue was at the far end. Gabriel is beside Yue. Hua was at the edge with her hand on the four-month belly. Elaine. Marie with the six-month belly. Paolo at the door with the ice spear and the Sailor Moon doll. Aiko with the loupe. Mark Jordan against the wall. Mei is in her wheelchair with Chocho.

Haitao at the opposite end. James is beside him. Chen Wei and Ji-hoon Park are behind. Min-joo and Ji-yoo are together. Yi Chen. Sera. Yoona.

Paolo's four — Carmen, Esperanza, Sofia, Lina — at the far end. Four Baseline women. Four pregnant bellies. Four children are coming.

Eight pregnant women total at the table. Hua. Marie. Alessia. Elaine. Carmen. Esperanza. Sofia. Lina.

"The harvest." Jae-min opened, his voice carrying across the narra table. "This morning. The south field. Twenty-two bodies. The essences were gone."

"Gone." The household echoed.

"The essences dissipated." Jae-min explained, leaning forward. "Essence must be collected at the moment of death — the moment the spirit half separates from the body. The essences were not collected during the battle. They dissipated overnight. Twenty-two essences. Lost."

"Why were they not collected?" Yi Chen questioned, his golden eyes sharpening.

"The Asura Hell Katana." Jae-min answered, his dark eyes finding Min-joo's. "The manifestation. During the battle, I was watching the fourth soulbound weapon appear. I wasn't collecting. The essences rose and found nothing pulling, and they scattered."

"The void was distracted by the soulbound weapon." Yi Chen measured.

"I was distracted." Jae-min corrected, his voice firm. "Not the void. Me. I was watching Min-joo's weapon manifest, and I wasn't doing my job. Twenty-two essences were lost because I was watching instead of working."

Min-joo's black eyes held Jae-min's. The Asura captain heard that his weapon's manifestation had cost the compound twenty-two essences. "The scar is mine. The essences were the captain's."

"The cost was mine." Jae-min stated, his jaw set. "Next time — the spatial storage and the Asura Hell Katana work together. Min-joo takes the souls. I take the essences. Both at the moment. The complete harvest."

"The complete harvest." Min-joo confirmed, nodding.

"The rule." Yi Chen addressed, his golden eyes moving to the system. "Essence at the moment of death. The spirit half separates from the body at death. If collected — stored. If not collected — dissipated. Lost."

"Lost." Jae-min confirmed. "The essence is the other half of the soul. The spirit half — the power. The soul — the base self — departs on death or is trapped, as with the Asura Hell Katana. The essence must be collected at the moment. Not after."

"The soul and the essence are separate." Yi Chen parsed, his golden eyes narrowing. "The soul is the self. The essence is the power. Two halves. The soulbound weapon is the third."

"Three parts." Jae-min confirmed, raising three fingers. "Soul. Essence. Soulbound weapon. The three together — the complete soul. The Enhanced who has a soulbound weapon has a complete soul. The Enhanced who does not — two of three."

"The soulbound weapon completes the soul." Yi Chen declared. "That is the Trinity."

"Four soulbound weapons. Four complete souls." Jae-min stated. "Soulcleaver — Ji-yoo. Ifrit's Hell Katana — Mark Jordan. Oblivion — mine. Asura Hell Katana — Min-joo. Four. The rest — two of three. The third may come. Or not."

"The bestowal." Jae-min continued, shifting to the next system. "The vault holds essences. The essences can be used for bestowal — the spatial storage gives essence to a living recipient. The recipient's body decides what to become. Day 197. Gabriel — wind to Solar Wind. Jennifer — telepathy to Omni-Mind. Mei — Baseline to divine. Three bestowals. The vault was emptied."

"And the twenty-two from the warband would have replenished the vault." Yi Chen noted. "But they were lost."

"They were lost." Jae-min confirmed. "The vault holds what it held before Day 197. The Snake Woman. The raiders. The deep-snow things. Not replenished. The next battle — I collect at the moment. The vault fills."

"The bestowal has rules." Jae-min continued, his voice carrying the weight of the system. "The bestowal can upgrade an existing Enhanced — if the power has a universal-scale equivalent. Wind to Solar Wind. Life to Creation. Telepathy to Omni-Mind. The powers that have universal-scale equivalents can be upgraded. The powers that do not — cannot."

"Fire. Water. Earth. Metal. Heat. Lightning." Jae-min listed. "The elemental powers. No universal-scale equivalent. The elements stay elemental. The bestowal cannot help them."

"Lightning." Sera addressed, her silver eyes finding Jae-min's. "My power. I cannot be upgraded."

"You cannot be upgraded." Jae-min confirmed, his voice carrying the truth without decoration. "Lightning has no universal-scale equivalent. Your power is complete."

"Complete." Sera repeated, the word settling. Not adequate. Not enough. Complete. The power that had kept her alive for fifty days. The power that had brought her home.

"And Space. Time. Gravity. Force." Jae-min added. "Already at the ceiling. Nothing above them. I can absorb a thousand essences, and I will not be upgraded. Space and Time are the ceiling."

"The essences in the vault are for others." Jae-min continued. "For the powers that can be upgraded. Or for Baselines who can become Enhanced. The 3rd Generation. Mei is the first. The bestowal can create Enhanced from Baselines."

"But." Jae-min declared, the word landing on the table. "The bestowal has a cost. The cost is fertility."

The table went still.

The eight pregnant women — Hua, Marie, Alessia, Elaine, Carmen, Esperanza, Sofia, Lina — were the women who were carrying children.

"The fertility system." Alessia addressed from Jae-min's lap, her glow pulsing as she shifted to the doctor's register. "The compatibility system. The match rate between two Enhanced individuals. Required for conception — ninety to one hundred percent match. Same species. Below ninety percent — cross-species — cannot conceive."

"Baseline to Enhanced — immediate pregnancy." Alessia continued, her voice clinical. "No threshold. No compatibility requirement. The Baseline body has no Enhanced signature to conflict. Always fertile."

"Paolo and his four wives." Jae-min noted, gesturing toward the far end. "Paolo is Enhanced. Carmen, Esperanza, Sofia, Lina — Baseline. Four Baseline wives. Four immediate pregnancies. No threshold."

Paolo's hand tightened on Carmen's knee.

"Me and Hua. Enhanced and Baseline. Eun-hae. Immediate." Jae-min continued. "Uncle and Auntie. Enhanced and Baseline. Little Jae-min. Immediate."

"And Alessia." Jae-min addressed, his dark eyes finding his wife's. "Alessia was Enhanced. Body Enhancement. Group Three. I am Enhanced. Fundamental. Group One. Cross-species. Five percent compatibility. Infertile."

"The bestowal changed my signature." Alessia declared, her hand finding her belly. "From Group Three to Group One. From five percent to one hundred percent. Same species. Fertile. The bestowal made me fertile."

"The bestowal made Alessia fertile." Jae-min confirmed. "The bestowal changed her species. Raised her compatibility. Gave her the child." Jae-min's dark eyes found Alessia's. "The fundamental baby."

"But." Jae-min stated, the word landing hard. "The bestowal has a cost for Baselines."

The table went still again.

The Baseline women — Hua, Marie, Carmen, Esperanza, Sofia, Lina — the women who were pregnant now, who were fertile now.

"If a Baseline woman receives the bestowal, she becomes Enhanced." Jae-min laid out, his voice steady. "Once Enhanced, she needs a ninety to one hundred percent match with her partner to conceive. If the match is below ninety percent — infertile. The bestowal could make a fertile Baseline woman infertile. The bestowal could take her fertility."

"I cannot force the bestowal." Jae-min declared, his voice firm. "The bestowal is a choice. The recipient's. Always. The recipient must understand the cost. The recipient must consent. The recipient must choose — power or fertility. Or both, if the match is there. But the match is rare."

"The trade." Alessia addressed, her voice shifting from doctor to wife. "For an Enhanced woman who is cross-species, the bestowal can make her same-species. Fertile. The bestowal cured my infertility." Alessia's hand on her belly. "But for a Baseline woman who is already fertile — Baseline to Enhanced is always fertile. No threshold. The Baseline woman does not need the bestowal to conceive. The bestowal could take that fertility away."

"I am Baseline." Hua addressed from the edge, her violet-blue eyes steady. "I am Baseline, and I am pregnant, and I am fertile. If I received the bestowal, I would become Enhanced. If I became Enhanced, I might not be able to have more children. Unless the match is there."

"I will not ask you to risk Eun-hae's siblings." Jae-min declared, his dark eyes finding Hua's. "You stay Baseline. You stay fertile."

"I stay Baseline." Hua confirmed, her hand on her belly.

"Marie. Carmen. Esperanza. Sofia. Lina." Jae-min addressed. "Baseline. Pregnant. The same. You stay Baseline. The bestowal is not for you."

Paolo's four wives nodded — the four who chose fertility, the four who chose their children.

"The pregnant women are not candidates." Jae-min stated, his voice clear. "The eight. The bestowal is a physical transformation. The bestowal could harm the fetus. The eight are protected."

"Protected." Hua confirmed.

"Protected." Marie confirmed.

"Protected." Alessia confirmed.

"The choice is the recipient's." Alessia declared, her voice carrying the weight of a woman who had chosen. "Always. The captain gives. The recipient decides. The choice is sacred."

"The bestowal candidates," Jae-min continued, shifting to operational. "Corporal Reyes. Baseline. Lost her arm in the raiders war. The bestowal would alter her. Corporal Reyes is Baseline. Her fertility depends on the match. I must ask her. I must explain. She must choose.

"And the other seven rescued women." Jae-min added. "Seven Baseline women. Seven candidates. Each one — I must ask. Each one — the fertility risk. Each one — the choice. The bestowal is not forced. The bestowal is offered. With full knowledge. With consent."

Yi Chen's golden eyes were on the table.

The heir who had been filing for three days — the Trinity, the soulbound weapons, the Asura Hell Katana, the bestowal, the fertility, the choice.

The heir whose golden eyes were, for the first time, not filing.

Processing.

"The Chen Family," Yi Chen addressed, his voice quiet — not the assault captain's voice, the heir's voice. "The Chen Family does not ask. The Chen Family orders. The Chen Family does not explain. The Chen Family takes. The Chen Family does not seek consent. The Chen Family conscripts. The Chen Family forces."

The table was silent.

"You ask," Yi Chen declared, his golden eyes on Jae-min. "You explain the cost. You seek consent. You do not force. The bestowal — the power to make Enhanced from Baselines — and you ask. The Chen Family would not ask. The Chen Family would take. The Chen Family would breed soldiers without consent. The Chen Family would not care about fertility."

"The Chen Family does not care about the children," Yi Chen continued, his golden eyes moving to the pregnant women — the eight, the next generation, the protected. "The Chen Family does not protect the pregnant. The Chen Family uses everyone."

"You ask," Yi Chen repeated, his golden eyes holding Jae-min's. "You protect the pregnant. You let the Baseline women choose. You explain the cost. You seek consent."

"The compound asks," Jae-min confirmed, his dark eyes holding the golden ones. "The compound does not force. The compound does not take. The compound explains. The compound seeks consent. The compound holds — because holding is not taking. Holding is asking. And receiving. And choosing. Together."

"The vault needs replenishment," Jae-min stated, shifting to the operational. "Next battle. I collect at the moment. The vault fills. The bestowal follows — for those who choose. Corporal Reyes. The rescued women. Future candidates. The vault is the resource. The bestowal is the spending. The choice belongs to the recipient."

"Day 214," Jae-min declared, his voice carrying the captain's register. "The fourth day. Six remain. The essences were lost. The lesson was learned. I collect at the moment. The vault will replenish at the next battle. The bestowal candidates are identified. The candidates will be asked. The candidates will choose. The compound holds. The compound prepares. The compound grows."

"The compound holds." The household echoed — the voices overlapping, one voice.

Jae-min's dark eyes swept the table. Every face.

Rico — the uncle, here since Day 1.

Alessia — the fundamental, bestowed, pregnant.

Jennifer — the Omni-Mind.

Yue — the marble.

Gabriel — the flyer.

Hua — the chef, with Eun-hae 4 months.

Elaine — the spy, twelve weeks' pregnant.

Marie — the retired actress- with Little Jae-min.

Paolo — the ice, four wives, four children.

Carmen. Esperanza. Sofia. Lina — the four pregnant women who chose fertility.

Aiko — the weapons specialist.

Mark Jordan — the engineer, Ifrit's Hell Katana.

Mei — the divine fundamental.

Haitao — the restored captain.

James — the vice captain.

Min-joo — the Asura, Asura Hell Katana.

Ji-yoo — the twin, Soulcleaver.

Yoona — the vice captain.

Yi Chen — the adequate heir, the heir who was understanding.

Sera — lightning elemental, power complete.

Chen Wei and Ji-hoon Park are behind.

This is the benediction. Tightened for weight, image, and that last-line echo. No "said."

Tightened — The Compound Holds

"The people are the reason," Rico echoed, his voice carrying something that was not tactical — the uncle, the man who had watched the compound grow from one to many.

"The people are the reason." The household echoed — one voice.

The snow fell against the skylights. The narra table. The Steinway in the corner. The household. The eight pregnant women. The four soulbound weapons. The ten fundamentals. The divine tier.

And in the spatial storage — the essences from before Day 197.

Not replenished. Not full. But there. The resource is waiting to be spent.

The gift waiting to be given. The dead's essence waiting to become the living's power — for those who choose. For those who consented. For those who understood the cost.

The snow fell. The compound held. Six days.

The compound held.
