Chapter 292 - The Taker

Day 211. 06:34 hours.

The east wall.

The walkway.

Mark Jordan rose.

The Ifrit's Hell Katana rose.

The amber eyes blazing — not the amber of the engineer, the amber of the flame.

The Black Hell Flame erupted from the blade in a wall of black fire that consumed the light around it, sweeping across the golf course in a crescent that hissed and screamed as the snow ceased to exist — not melted, not evaporated, erased.

The black fire rolling toward Bagyo like a wave of erasure.

The wall hit Bagyo.

Bagyo walked through the fire.

The Black Hell Flame parted around him the way water parts around a stone — the fire that consumed light licking along his body and not catching, the body that was not skin and not flesh and was something else, something that the flame could not consume because the flame consumed light and the body was not light, the body was density, the body was mass compressed past the point where fire mattered.

"The fire doesn't work." Mark Jordan reported, his voice flat — the engineer who had watched his flame fail for the first time. "The fire doesn't work on him."

"The flame consumed light, and his body doesn't interact with light the way normal matter does. The enhancement changed his body's fundamental properties. The flame can't consume what isn't there." Jae-min calculated the void surging under his sternum — the dark void, the void that wanted to erase.

"Gravity." Jae-min ordered, turning to his right. "Ji-yoo. Now."

Ji-yoo was not on the walkway.

Ji-yoo was in the hospital with Sera.

Ji-yoo was not here.

[Mei]: "Ji-yoo is in the hospital." Mei reported through the comms, her voice tight. "She is with Sera. She is not on the wall."

"Ji-yoo is not here. The gravity hammer is not here. I'm running the strike team without its primary weapon." Jae-min registered, the math shifting — the captain who was now the hammer.

"Then I hold him." Jae-min declared, raising both Glocks. "Void. Now."

Jae-min fired.

Both Glocks.

The Wormhole Guided Bullets — the bullets that wormholed through space, the bullets that disappeared from the Glocks and appeared inside Bagyo's body.

The bullets are finding the organs.

The organs that were enhanced but were still organs.

The bullets that should have ended — nothing.

The bullets hit.

The bullets entered.

The bullets did not damage.

Bagyo's body absorbed the bullets the way it absorbed the fire and the cold.

The body was a fortress inside and out.

"The void doesn't work." Jae-min reported, his voice flat and cold — the captain who had just watched his primary weapon fail. "The body is sealed. The bullets enter, but they don't damage. The organs are enhanced. The body is —"

Bagyo hit the wall.

The wall — Vasquez's wall, four meters of compressed earth — cracked.

Not broke.

Cracked.

The wall that had held against forty-seven Manusya cracked under the momentum of a high-tier body enhancement.

The wall that was earth and the body that was a battering ram.

The crack running from the impact point upward — a fracture line in the compressed earth, the snow camouflage falling away from the crack in sheets, the real wall visible for the first time through the camouflage.

"Vasquez!" Jae-min ordered, his voice cutting through the impact. "Reinforce! Now!"

[Elena Vasquez]: "Reinforcing!" Vasquez reported from the north wall, her hands already on the earth, her power reaching across the compound to the crack.

The wall thickening.

The crack is closing.

The earth flowing — Vasquez's power shaping the compressed earth the way she had shaped it for two days, the earth-manipulation captain holding the wall she had built.

"Yue." Jae-min ordered, turning to his left. "Flank. Cut the tendons. The joints. The gaps."

"Copy." Yue confirmed, the marble cracking for one second as the blink-teleport took her — the instantaneous displacement that put her behind Bagyo in less than a second.

The marble woman appears in the snow like a ghost.

The jian is swinging for the Achilles tendon.

The dimensional edge — the edge that cuts space — finds the gap behind the ankle.

The edge cutting.

The tendon — the tendon that was enhanced but was still a tendon — parting.

Bagyo's leg is buckling.

Bagyo roared.

The roar of a man whose tendon had been cut, the body that was a fortress having a gap.

The body that could not be burned, could not be voided, and could not be crushed, having a weakness — the joints, the tendons, the places where the enhancement was thinner.

"The joints." Jae-min catalogued, the captain filing the tactical data. "Yue — the joints. The tendons. The dimensional edge cuts them."

Yue cut.

The jian singing through the snow — the dimensional edge finding the other Achilles, the back of the knee, the wrist.

The joints that were gaps in the enhancement.

The tendons that were weaker than the muscle.

Bagyo buckling.

Bagyo falling. The body enhancement was a fortress on the outside, finds that the fortress had doors.

Bagyo fell.

The wall stopped cracking. Vasquez reinforced. The crack closed.

The wall held.

Bagyo was on the ground — the body that was a fortress, the body that could not be burned and could not be voided and could not be crushed, now on the ground with cut tendons and the dimensional edge finding the joints and the fortress having doors.

"Yi." Jae-min ordered, turning to the reserve. "Spears. Pin him. The joints. The shoulders. The hips. Pin him to the ground."

Yi Chen's golden gates opened wider.

Six spears — long, steel, the heads glowing with the golden light of the Weapons Gate — floated forward and accelerated.

The spears hitting Bagyo — the shoulders, the hips, the joints that were gaps. The spears pinning Bagyo to the frozen ground.

The steel is finding the gaps.

The body that was a fortress was pinned through the doors.

Bagyo roared — not pain; the body did not feel pain, but fury. The fury of a man who had walked for fifty days and who had been pinned by spears from a golden gate.

"The spears will not hold." Yi Chen reported, his golden eyes on Bagyo. "He is too strong. The body-type enhancement is regenerating the tendons. The cuts are healing. He will break the spears in —"

"Then we end him." Jae-min declared, the captain running the math — the captain whose void had failed, whose flame had failed, whose dimensional edge had found the gaps, but the gaps were healing.

The captain who was running out of options.

[Ji-yoo]: "Oppa." Ji-yoo's voice came through the comms — the twin, the twin who was in the hospital with Sera, the twin who had heard the battle through the comms. The twin who had heard the void doesn't work, and the fire doesn't work, and the spears will not hold. "Oppa. Use Soulcleaver."

"Soulcleaver." Jae-min repeated, his dark eyes on the comms unit.

[Ji-yoo]: "I am coming." Ji-yoo declared, her voice carrying the urgency of a woman who was leaving a hospital bed and running toward a wall. "Two minutes. Hold him. Two minutes."

"Two minutes." Jae-min measured — the captain who had to hold a high-tier body enhancement for two minutes with void and flame and dimensional edge and spears that were breaking.

"Hold." Jae-min ordered, his voice carrying the register that meant the next two minutes were not negotiable. "Yue — the joints. Keep cutting. The tendons regenerate — cut them again. Yi Chen — spears. Keep pinning. The spears break — replace them. Mark Jordan — blade. The steel works where the flame doesn't. The neck. The throat. The places where the enhancement is thinnest."

"Copy." The strike team echoed — the three-person assault on a high-tier body enhancement who was regenerating and breaking spears and roaring and trying to rise.

Yue cut.

The jian singing — the dimensional edge finding the regenerating tendons and cutting them again.

Bagyo's leg is buckling.

Bagyo's arm reaches for Yue.

Yue blinked — the instantaneous displacement taking her three meters away and back.

The marble woman appears and disappears, and cuts.

The jian finding the gaps.

The edge is opening the doors.

Yi Chen pinned.

The spears breaking — the enhanced body generating force that snapped the steel shafts.

Yi Chen replacing the spears — the golden gates opening, new spears floating forward, the Weapons Gate deploying replacement after replacement.

The mobile reserve was now a munitions supply line.

The golden gates cycling.

The spears pinning. Bagyo is breaking them.

Yi Chen is replacing them.

Mark Jordan engaged.

The Ifrit's Hell Katana — not the flame, the blade.

The steel edge finds the neck.

The neck was where the enhancement was thinnest.

The blade biting — not deep, not enough, but biting.

The first cut that drew blood.

The blood that was dark and thick and that froze in the air. The blood that proved the fortress could bleed.

One minute.

Bagyo roaring.

The spears breaking. The tendons regenerating. Yue cutting. Yi Chen is replacing. Mark Jordan is slashing. The three-person assault is holding the line.

Two minutes.

Ji-yoo landed on the walkway.

The twin who had run from the hospital.

The twin whose dark eyes were on Bagyo.

The twin whose hand went to her chest.

The hand that went into her chest.

The hand that came back holding the scythe.

Soulcleaver manifested.

The eight-foot rifle-scythe.

The forty kilograms of compressed gravitational energy.

The blade — gravity itself, compressed to neutron star density, the blade that was not metal but was the twin's own power made solid.

The shaft — purple crystalline highlights, the violet glow that pulsed with the twin's heartbeat.

The aura — gravitational distortion, space folding inward near the blade, the air bending, the snow falling upward around the weapon.

The weapon that was the twin.

The weapon that was gravity-made solid. The weapon that dissolved into her soul when not in use and came back when called.

The weapon that was Ji-yoo.

The walkway went still.

Not Bagyo — Bagyo was still roaring, still pinned, still regenerating.

Yi and Min-joo — both went still. They had been fighting, and that was now watching the twin hold a weapon that had not been there a second ago. The weapon that had come from her chest.

The weapon was eight feet tall and forty kilograms and was gravity-made solid.

"She pulled a weapon from her soul. The woman — the twin — Jae-min's sister — she reached into her chest and pulled a scythe. A scythe that is gravity. A scythe that was not there and is now there. What — what is that?" Yi Chen registered, his golden eyes widening — the assault captain who classified everything, who ranked everything, who was now looking at a weapon that did not fit any classification he had.

A weapon that was not a weapon.

A weapon that was the woman.

A weapon that was gravity.

"What?" Yi Chen breathed, the word escaping before the classification could catch it. "What is that?"

Min-joo's black eyes went wide from the north garrison window — the Asura captain who had been Ji-yoo's boyfriend, who had been in the compound for three days, and who had not seen this.

The man who had watched Ji-yoo kill with gravity and force and a Glock and who had not known she had this.

The black eyes on Soulcleaver.

The black eyes on the woman he loved held a weapon he had never seen.

"She has a weapon in her soul. Like mine. A weapon I've never seen. A weapon she never told me about." Min-joo reeled, his hand gripping the windowsill.

"Soulcleaver." Jae-min answered, his voice carrying the captain's certainty — the captain who had seen it before, the captain whose voice did not change. "Ji-yoo's weapon. Soulbound. The dimensional edge — the edge that cuts space — was a gift. Passed through me. To her. To Soulcleaver."

"Soulbound." Yi Chen repeated, the word landing on the walkway — the classification the assault captain did not have in his files because the assault captain had not known that soulbound weapons existed.

The golden eyes on the blade.

The golden eyes on the gravity that was the blade.

The golden eyes recalculating everything.

Ji-yoo did not explain.

Ji-yoo did not wait.

Soulcleaver swung.

The scythe — the eight-foot arc, the blade that was gravity-compressed to neutron-star density — swept down toward Bagyo.

The dimensional edge — the edge that cuts space itself — reaches.

The edge that had cut the tendons.

The edge that was now reaching for the neck.

The edge that cut space, finding the space the neck occupied and cutting it.

The edge hit.

The dimensional edge went through Bagyo's neck.

Through the enhanced skin.

Through the enhanced muscle.

Through the enhanced bone.

Through the spine.

The edge that cut space, cutting through the body that was a fortress because the fortress was still in space, and the edge cut space.

Bagyo's head separated.

The body that could not be burned.

The body that could not be voided.

The body that could not be crushed.

The body that had been pinned and cut and speared was now — headless.

The fortress has a final door.

The door that was the neck.

The edge that opened it.

The blood — dark, thick, pressurized by the enhanced cardiovascular system — sprayed from the severed neck in a fountain that arced three meters into the air.

The blood freezing in mid-spray, the red becoming black crystals that hung in the air like rubies suspended in white silk, the crystallized blood catching the gray light and refracting it into a hundred tiny red rainbows before the snow swallowed them.

The head rolling — once, twice — settling in the snow face-up.

The face of the taker.

The face that had spoken about sharing and taking and the strong belonging with the strong.

The face that was now still.

The body — the headless, fortress body — twitched once.

The enhanced muscles are firing their last signals. The tendons that had been regenerating were still going. The spears are still pinning the shoulders and the hips.

The body that had been a battering ram became a corpse.

The three hundred pounds of enhanced muscle and bone settled into the snow.

Dead.

"Primary down." Jae-min reported, his voice flat. "Bagyo is dead."

The six secondaries — the ones who had been standing behind Bagyo, the ones who had been watching their leader charge the wall and get cut down — the six secondaries ran.

All six.

Dropping weapons.

Running south.

Running from the wall and the void and the gravity and the marble woman with the jian and the golden gates with the spears and the twin with the scythe that had just cut through a high-tier body enhancement's neck like it was paper.

"Let them run." Jae-min ordered, his voice carrying the calculation that was not mercy but strategy. "The secondaries were followers. The secondaries will spread the word. The compound is not a resource. The compound is a fortress."

"Casualties." Jae-min addressed, his dark eyes on the headless body in the snow.

"Compound: zero." Mei reported from the console. "Strike team: zero. Wall: cracked but reinforced. Bagyo: dead. Secondaries: fleeing."

"Zero." Jae-min repeated — the captain who had engaged a high-tier body enhancement and six secondaries and who had lost zero.

Ji-yoo dissolved Soulcleaver.

The scythe — the eight-foot rifle-scythe — folding back into her soul.

The seed is returning.

The weapon that was the twin and that was now not.

The twin was standing on the walkway with her hands empty and her dark eyes on the snow where Bagyo's body lay.

"The weapon folded back into her. The scythe that was gravity-compressed into her soul. The weapon that is the woman. I have never — in five months of watching — I have never seen anything like that. The compound has soulbound weapons. Three of them. Ji-yoo's. Mark Jordan's. and —" Yi Chen calculated, his golden eyes moving from Ji-yoo to Jae-min.

"Jae-min." Yi Chen addressed, the golden eyes, finding the captain's dark ones. "Soulcleaver. You said soulbound. Ji-yoo's. Mark Jordan has the Ifrit's Hell Katana." The golden eyes held. "You have one too."

It was not a question.

It was a statement — the assault captain who classified everything had classified three soulbound weapons and was stating the classification.

"Three soulbound weapons." Yi Chen declared, his voice carrying the weight of a man who was filing. "Ji-yoo's. Mark Jordan's. Yours."

"Three." Jae-min confirmed, his voice not changing.

"What is yours called?" Yi Chen pressed, the golden eyes that were not letting this go — the assault captain who needed data and who was finally in a position to ask.

Jae-min's dark eyes held Yi Chen's golden ones.

The captain and the heir.

The void and the weapons gate.

The two men who had fought together for the first time and who were now standing on a walkway above a headless corpse and who were having the conversation that the battle had interrupted.

"Oblivion." Jae-min answered.

The name landed on the walkway.

The name was the weapon. The weapon that was in his soul. The name that meant — oblivion. The state of being forgotten. The state of being erased.

The state of being nothing.

"Oblivion." Yi Chen repeated, the word, settling into his files — the golden eyes on Jae-min, the golden eyes running the implications of a word that meant erasure. "And Oblivion is —"

"Last resort." Jae-min stated, the two words closing the door. The two words that were not an explanation. The two words that ended the conversation. The two words that left the question — what does Oblivion do — hanging on the walkway with the snow and the headless body and the strike team and the weapon that was in Jae-min's soul.

Yi Chen's golden eyes held Jae-min's.

The look — the long look.

The look of a man who was filing.

The look of a man who was not going to press because the captain had closed the door and the door would open when the captain decided.

The look that said: I have the word. I have the name. I have the classification. I have the refusal. I will file it. I will wait. And when Oblivion comes — when the last resort is the resort — I will be there, and I will see.

"Copy." Yi Chen accepted, the single word carrying the soldier's acceptance of a refused door.

Min-joo's black eyes moved from Jae-min to Ji-yoo — the Asura captain at the window, the man who had watched his girlfriend manifest a weapon he had never seen and who had heard her brother name a weapon he had never heard of.

The black eyes that were not going to ask because Min-joo did not ask — Min-joo waited.

Min-joo filed.

Min-joo watched.

Ji-yoo's dark eyes found Min-joo's across the courtyard.

The twin and the boyfriend.

The two who were having a conversation without words — the conversation that said I have things I have not told you. I have a weapon that lives in my soul. I have a brother with a weapon called Oblivion that is the last resort. I will tell you. Later. Not here. Not on this walkway above a headless corpse. Later. When we are alone. When the bed is just the bed and not the bed after a battle. The conversation that said: I will tell you then.

Min-joo's black eyes held Ji-yoo's — the look that said I will wait. I have waited. I will wait longer. You are Ji-yoo. You have a scythe that comes from your soul and a brother with a weapon called Oblivion, and I do not need to know today. I will know when you decide.

"Mei." Jae-min addressed, his voice shifting from combat to aftermath. "Sera. Status."

[Mei]: "Stable." Mei reported from the console. "Core temp rising. Heart rate stabilizing. Alessia has her on IV fluids and calorie paste. Ji-yoo is back in the hospital with Sera. She is —" Mei paused, her violet-blue eyes leaving the monitor for one second. "She is holding Sera's hand."

"Holding her hand." Jae-min repeated — the captain who heard what the data meant. The twin who had found her vocalist and who was not letting go.

"Sera Esquilla." Jae-min declared, his voice carrying the captain's register across the walkway. "Lightning-type Authority. Ji-yoo's bandmate. Fifty-day walker. She will join the compound."

[Rico]: "She will join." Rico confirmed from the north gate, his voice softer than usual — the uncle who had heard the reunion, the uncle whose tactical mind was running the numbers.

Another Enhanced.

An Authority who had survived fifty days alone on her power.

An Authority who had bent lightning into a cocoon that kept her alive in minus seventy.

An Authority who was worth more than her tier.

"The compound's count." Jae-min addressed, turning to Yi Chen. "Update."

"Ten fundamentals. Plus another Authority — Sera." Yi Chen calculated, the golden eyes running the math. "Plus the Heracles frames. Plus the coalition. Plus the Asura garrisons. Plus the divine tier. The math continues to change."

"The math continues to change." Jae-min confirmed, nodding. "The beacon drew the region. The region came. Some came as friends — Sera. Some came as enemies — Bagyo. Some came as something in between — the secondaries who fled. The region will keep coming. The beacon is lit. The beacon does not go out. The region will see the beacon for months. The region will come for months."

"The compound holds." Jae-min declared, his dark eyes sweeping the walkway — the strike team, the heir, the sentinel, the household below. "The compound has met the region. The beacon drew them. The beacon will keep drawing them. The compound prepares. The compound grows. The compound holds."

[All]: "The compound holds." The echo came back — from Rico, from Yi Chen, from the strike team, from the household. The voices overlap through the comms.

The snow fell on the headless body on the ground.

The blood crystals dissolve into the white.

The wall — cracked but reinforced, the snow camouflage already being repaired by Paolo's ice — holding.

The strike team on the walkway.

The heir who had a new word: Oblivion. The Asura captain who had a new file: soulbound.

The twin who was in the hospital holding her vocalist's hand. The captain who had a weapon and a refusal, and a closed door.

And somewhere in Marie's mansion — in the ballroom, in the surgical ward that was now a recovery room — Ji-yoo sat beside a bed and held the hand of a woman with silver eyes and short dark hair and a lightning field that had kept her alive for fifty days.

The guitar player and the vocalist.

Together again.

The band that had been dead and was not dead.

The music that had been silent and was not silent — not yet, not now, but the guitar was in the closet, and the vocalist was in the bed, and the world was frozen and the compound held.

The snow fell.

The compound held.

The beacon was lit.

The region would come.

The compound would hold.

The void and the edge and the steel and the spears and the closed door that was Oblivion and that would stay closed until the day the cost was too high, and the last resort was the resort.

That day was not today.

The compound held.
