Chapter 59 - CHAPTER 60: Pink Moon

One year to the day after they first met, Kael took Lyra back to the record store.

Vinyl Resting Place looked the same. The faded gold lettering. The bell above the door. Leonard behind the counter, cleaning a record that was already spotless.

"Kael!" Leonard's face lit up. "And you brought the young lady. The one who asked about Nick Drake."

"She's more than that now," Kael said.

Leonard looked between them. "I can see that."

They browsed the bins together. Kael showed her albums he loved. She showed him covers that caught her eye. They left with three records—Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and a new Nick Drake pressing Leonard had set aside.

Outside, the rain had started. Kael opened his umbrella and held it over both of them. Lyra leaned into his warmth.

"One year," she said.

"One year."

"A lot has changed."

"A lot hasn't."

She looked up at him. "What happens next?"

He thought about the gatherings. The tentative alliances. The young vampire who wanted to learn about wolf culture. The old wolf who had accepted Lyra into the pack. The bridge beneath the mountain, healing slowly.

"We keep going," he said. "One day at a time. We keep choosing each other. We keep choosing forgiveness over hatred. We keep building whatever this is."

"That's not a plan."

"It's the only plan I have."

She smiled. "It's enough."

They walked through the rain together, past the closed bakery where they'd first seen each other. The corner of 23rd and Flanders. The awning that had sheltered her from the storm.

Kael stopped. "This is where it started."

"I remember."

"You were standing right there. I saw you across the street. I thought you were the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. And the most dangerous."

"I thought you smelled like a storm over the ocean. I didn't know whether to run or stay."

"You stayed."

"So did you."

He kissed her. In the rain, on the corner where everything began, Kael Shadowban

e kissed Lyra Silvanus.

And the song continued.
