The light came from beneath the altar.
Kael watched as it rose through the water—pale blue, cold, beautiful. It illuminated the cave walls, making the symbols seem to dance.
"What do we do?" Mira asked. She was standing at the cave entrance, her posture tense.
"The voice said we need to restore the bonds," Lyra said. "The first one—the tunnel—was restored when we bound Aurelius. This one..." She looked at Kael. "I think it needs something from us."
"The same thing? Blood?"
"Maybe. But the voice said the bonds were places where vampire and wolf stood as equals. It wasn't just about blood. It was about choice."
Kael understood. He stood and faced Lyra across the glowing pool.
"In the tunnel, we chose to work together. To trust each other. That's what activated the first bond."
"And here?"
"Here we choose something else. Something more."
He reached across the water and took her hands. The glow intensified, rising around them like mist.
"I choose you," Kael said. "Not because of a prophecy. Not because of blood or magic or ancient alliances. Because you're the first person in my life who saw me and didn't look away."
Lyra's silver eyes were bright. "I choose you too. Not because I'm supposed to. Because I want to."
The water surged. Light erupted from the pool, filling the cave. The symbols on the walls blazed. And beneath the surface, the stone altar shifted—not breaking, but opening. A crack appeared, and from it, something rose.
A name.
Aurelius.
The same name they had used to bind the creature. But here, it was different. It glowed with the same pale light, and as it reached the surface, it dissolved into the water.
The pool went dark. The light faded. The cave was silent.
"It's done," Lyra whispered. "The second bond is restored."
Kael pulled her close. "Two down. One to go."
Mira stepped forward. "What was that? The name—Aurelius—I thought that was the creature."
"It was. It is." Lyra frowned. "But here, it was something else. Like a piece of something larger."
Kael looked at the pool. The water was still again. Dark. But beneath the surface, he could see the altar—whole once more, but different. Changed.
"We need to find the third bond," he said. "Before whoever else is searching finds it first."
