Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 16 — The Way It Continues

The next day felt the same.

That was what made it different.

Liora noticed it the moment she woke up—not because anything had changed, but because nothing had. The light through her window fell at the same angle. The quiet hum of the morning settled in the same way. Even the small, meaningless details aligned too neatly.

It wasn't natural.

It wasn't wrong either.

It just—

Continued.

She sat up slowly, letting the feeling pass through her without resisting it. There was no point anymore. Not in trying to convince herself it was normal. Not in pretending she didn't see it.

She saw it now.

That wasn't going away.

---

Classes moved the same way they always did.

Liora found her seat, her bag resting lightly at her side as voices filled the room in overlapping layers of conversation and movement. She didn't look for him.

Not directly.

But she noticed when he wasn't there.

That was new.

Before, she would have assumed coincidence. Different schedules. Different timing.

Now—

Now it felt intentional.

Not his absence.

Her awareness of it.

---

"…You're staring at the door."

Liora blinked, glancing away quickly as her friend leaned slightly closer.

"…Am I?"

"Yes."

"…I didn't realize."

"That's usually how that works."

Liora gave a faint smile, but it didn't fully reach her expression. "…Just distracted."

"You've been like that all week."

"…I know."

Her friend studied her for a moment longer, like she wanted to say something else, but didn't.

"…You'll tell me if something's wrong?"

A pause.

"…Yeah," Liora said.

Not a lie.

Not entirely the truth either.

---

The lecture continued.

Words passed.

Time moved.

And then—

A shift.

Small.

Subtle.

But there.

---

The clock on the wall skipped.

Not visibly.

Not in a way anyone else would notice.

But Liora saw it.

One second stretched—

Then snapped forward.

---

Her pen stilled.

"…Okay."

The word stayed in her head this time.

She didn't react.

Didn't look around.

Didn't draw attention.

---

But she felt it.

---

That wasn't him.

---

The realization came easily now.

Too easily.

---

Because his changes—

They didn't feel like that.

---

A chair scraped too sharply against the floor across the room, the sound cutting through the quiet in a way that felt slightly… delayed.

Like it had happened twice.

---

Liora exhaled slowly.

"…It's getting worse."

Not dangerous.

Not yet.

But noticeable.

---

And that meant—

They weren't being careful anymore.

---

Or they couldn't be.

---

Her gaze shifted again, almost unconsciously.

Toward the empty seat near the window.

---

"…Where are you?"

---

She didn't mean to think it.

But she did.

---

The rest of the class passed without anything else breaking.

That didn't make it better.

It just meant the moments were spaced out.

More deliberate.

More controlled.

---

Or less.

---

By the time she left, the air outside felt… clearer.

Not safer.

Just less compressed.

---

Liora didn't go to the park.

Not right away.

---

She walked.

---

The city moved around her in its usual rhythm—cars, voices, movement—but now she could feel the layers beneath it. The slight hesitation in motion. The almost-imperceptible delays. The way events lined up too perfectly—or not perfectly enough.

---

A man bumped into her shoulder.

Lightly.

Normal.

---

Except—

For a fraction of a second—

He didn't.

---

Two outcomes.

One real.

One not.

---

She didn't react.

---

"…Right."

---

It wasn't just him anymore.

---

That thought should have scared her.

It didn't.

Not the way it should have.

---

Because she knew—

---

If it mattered—

---

He would fix it.

---

The realization settled in deeper than anything else.

Not comforting.

Not entirely.

---

But steady.

---

By the time she reached the park, the sun had already begun to dip lower, casting longer shadows across the ground. The bench waited where it always did.

And this time—

He was already there.

---

Liora slowed slightly, something in her chest tightening before she could stop it.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

Something softer.

Something worse.

---

"…You're early."

---

Adrian glanced at her as she approached.

"…No."

---

She almost smiled.

---

"…Of course not."

---

She sat beside him without asking.

Without thinking about it too much.

---

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

---

"…It's getting worse," she said quietly.

---

"Yes."

---

No denial.

No hesitation.

---

"…You knew."

---

"Yes."

---

Liora leaned back slightly, her gaze drifting upward.

"…That's not reassuring."

---

"I know."

---

Silence settled again.

---

"…It wasn't you," she continued.

---

"No."

---

"…I can tell now."

---

A pause.

---

"…Yes."

---

That was new.

---

She glanced at him briefly.

"…That's not good, is it?"

---

"No."

---

At least he was honest.

---

"…Are you going to do something about it?"

---

"Yes."

---

"…You already are."

---

"Yes."

---

Liora let out a quiet breath.

"…That's also not reassuring."

---

"No."

---

Another pause.

---

"…You're still calm."

---

"Yes."

---

"…Why?"

---

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

---

"…Because it doesn't change anything."

---

"For you."

---

"Yes."

---

There it was again.

---

Liora shook her head faintly.

"…You're impossible."

---

"I've been told that."

---

That almost made her laugh.

Almost.

---

"…It felt different today," she said after a moment.

---

"How?"

---

"…Messier."

---

A pause.

---

"…Less precise."

---

"Yes."

---

"…Like something was pushing instead of… removing."

---

Adrian didn't correct her this time.

---

"…That's close enough."

---

She studied him again.

"…You're not worried about them."

---

"No."

---

"…At all."

---

"No."

---

That certainty hadn't changed.

Not even slightly.

---

"…You really think you can just keep doing this."

---

"Yes."

---

The answer came without hesitation.

---

"…Forever?"

---

A pause.

---

"…As long as I need to."

---

That wasn't the same thing.

---

Liora noticed.

---

"…That's not an answer."

---

"It is."

---

"…It's not a complete one."

---

"It doesn't need to be."

---

She exhaled softly.

"…You're doing it again."

---

"Doing what?"

---

"…Only answering the part that matters to you."

---

"Yes."

---

Of course he was.

---

Liora leaned back slightly, her shoulder brushing his without meaning to.

She didn't move away.

---

"…I saw something else today."

---

Adrian didn't react.

Not visibly.

---

"A clock skipped," she said. "Not wrong. Just… off. And a sound repeated. Like it didn't land the first time."

---

A pause.

---

"…They're adjusting too aggressively."

---

"They?"

---

The word slipped out before she could stop it.

---

Liora froze slightly.

Then exhaled.

"…I don't know."

---

Not really.

---

But—

---

"…It doesn't feel like just you anymore."

---

Adrian didn't confirm it.

Didn't deny it.

---

"…It isn't always just me."

---

That was enough.

---

Not clarity.

Not certainty.

---

But something.

---

Liora closed her eyes briefly.

"…I don't like that."

---

"I know."

---

"…I don't like any of this."

---

"I know."

---

Another pause.

---

"…But I still came here."

---

"Yes."

---

"…You knew I would."

---

"Yes."

---

She let out a small breath.

"…I don't know if that's a good thing."

---

"It is."

---

"…For you."

---

"Yes."

---

At least he wasn't pretending.

---

Liora turned her head slightly, her gaze settling on him again.

"…You're not going to stop."

---

"No."

---

"…Even if it gets worse."

---

"No."

---

"…Even if I tell you to."

---

A pause.

---

"…No."

---

There it was again.

---

That line.

---

Unmoving.

---

Unbreakable.

---

Liora looked at him for a long moment.

Then—

She leaned just slightly closer.

Not much.

Just enough that the space between them changed.

---

"…You're really selfish."

---

"Yes."

---

"…And you're okay with that."

---

"Yes."

---

"…I'm starting to understand that."

---

A pause.

---

"…Is that a problem?"

---

Liora didn't answer right away.

---

"…I don't know yet."

---

That was honest.

---

And somehow—

That was enough.

---

The world shifted again.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

---

But she felt it.

---

A small distortion.

A slight delay.

Something pressing at the edges.

---

And for the first time—

---

She didn't look away from him.

---

Because she already knew—

---

He wouldn't let it reach her.

---

"…Stay," she said quietly.

---

It wasn't a command.

Not really.

---

But it wasn't nothing either.

---

Adrian didn't hesitate.

---

"I am."

---

And for now—

---

That was enough.
