​The blue glow from the bank of monitors reflected off the polished mahogany desk, casting long, sharp shadows across the room. My fingers flew over the keyboard, the rapid clicking sound the only noise breaking the heavy silence of the study.

​For two agonizing days, this room had been our entire world. Two days of staring at scrolling data, blinking maps, and endless public registries until our eyes were bloodshot and our heads throbbed from exhaustion. Ever since Thomas flatlined down in the medical bay, the air in this house had been thick with tension. We had been running ourselves into the ground trying to hunt down whatever he was trying to tell us before his heart quit, but every single path had led us straight into a brick wall.

​That was all the old man had given us. Two syllables and a broken breath. And for forty-eight hours, those two syllables had felt like a cruel joke.
