Chapter 82 - The pack that chose each other

The claw never reached Nancy.

Kai intercepted it first.

Not physically.

Through the bond.

Silver-gold light exploded from him so violently the entire clearing shook. The corruption inside his body collided with the Guardian energy—

and instead of consuming him—

it changed.

The darkness fractured apart like glass flooded with sunlight.

Kai screamed, dropping to one knee as power surged through him too fast to control.

Nancy grabbed him instantly.

"Kai!"

But his eyes—

his eyes were glowing gold and silver now too.

The Watcher froze.

Impossible.

The First Alpha stared in shock.

The bond accepted him.

Nyra sounded equally stunned.

It's sharing itself.

Not transferring.

Not replacing.

Becoming many instead of one.

The realization spread through the clearing instantly.

Nancy looked toward the pack.

Toward Leo.

Toward the wolves still struggling to stand.

And suddenly she understood what Elyra missed.

Connection was never meant to be carried alone.

"Open the bond," Nancy said.

Leo blinked.

"…What?"

"Trust me."

That sentence alone would've sounded insane an hour ago.

Now?

Leo stepped forward immediately.

"So do it."

One by one—

the wolves joined willingly.

Not obedience.

Choice.

The bond spread between them like living starlight.

Nancy felt each connection settle into place carefully this time—

balanced.

Shared.

The unbearable weight inside her chest eased for the first time since awakening as Guardian.

The Watcher recoiled.

YOU DIVIDE THE BURDEN.

Nancy smiled despite the exhaustion.

"Yeah. That's kind of what families do."

The claw struck again.

This time the entire pack answered.

Gold and silver light erupted upward together, slamming into the Watcher's limb hard enough to crack reality around it.

For the first time—

the Watcher made a sound.

Pain.

The clearing went dead silent afterward.

Leo stared upward in disbelief.

"…We just hurt it."

The Veil looked equally shocked.

The Watcher slowly withdrew its damaged claw back toward the fracture.

Its gaze swept across the connected pack now.

Not curious.

Cautious.

The First Alpha stepped beside Nancy proudly.

At last.

The true bond.

Not ruler and followers.

Not power and obedience.

A network.

Alive.

The Watcher's voice darkened dangerously.

THIS CHANGES NOTHING.

But there was hesitation now.

Tiny.

Yet real.

Nancy felt it immediately.

"You're scared."

The eye narrowed.

YOU CANNOT DEFEAT ME.

"Maybe not forever," Nancy admitted.

The bond around her glowed brighter.

"But forever isn't today."

The Veil suddenly moved too.

Not against them.

With them.

Darkness wrapped around the fracture from the inside while the bond pulled from the outside.

The Watcher realized their plan instantly.

The fracture began closing.

Its massive eye widened slightly for the first time.

NO.

The forest exploded with energy.

Every wolf pushed harder.

Nancy felt Kai beside her anchoring the bond steadily now.

Not dying.

Not fading.

Here.

With her.

The fracture shrank inch by inch.

The Watcher lunged forward furiously—

but the Veil blocked it completely.

For the first time in existence—

the ancient darkness chose something other than survival.

It chose defiance.

Nancy felt tears sting her eyes again.

The Watcher roared loud enough to shake worlds.

YOU WILL ALL END EVENTUALLY.

"Probably," Nancy shouted back.

The fracture became smaller.

Smaller.

"But not alone."

And with one final surge—

the bond ignited across the entire forest.

Silver.

Gold.

Darkness.

Light.

Together.

The fracture sealed shut.

The Watcher vanished.

Silence crashed down over the clearing instantly.

Then—

everything collapsed.

Nancy barely had time to breathe before exhaustion dragged her down completely.

The last thing she felt—

was Kai catching her before she hit the ground.
