Chapter 15 - Chapter Fifteen: The Truth No One Wants

By the fifteenth day, Ebirien looked peaceful again.

Too peaceful.

The market was lively.

Children played in the streets.

Neighbors laughed like nothing had ever happened.

If a stranger walked into the town, they would see nothing wrong.

But beneath that calm…

something was waiting.

Not growing wildly like before.

Not breaking things loudly.

But settling.

Deep.

Like roots spreading underground where no one could see.

Tare stood at the edge of the square, watching everything.

"They've chosen comfort," he said quietly.

Beside him, Kola folded his arms.

"Can you blame them?" he replied.

"They went through too much."

Tare didn't answer immediately.

Because he understood.

Pain changes people.

But so does relief.

And sometimes…

relief makes people forget faster than pain ever could.

"They think it's over," Tare said finally.

Kola sighed.

"I think they want it to be over."

That was the truth.

And it was more dangerous than fear.

Later that day, the town held another gathering.

Not because something forced them to.

But because Tare insisted.

People came reluctantly.

Some curious.

Some annoyed.

Some uninterested.

"We're fine," a man said before Tare could even speak.

"Yes," a woman added. "Nothing has happened."

Murmurs of agreement followed.

Tare stepped forward slowly.

"That's not true," he said.

Silence.

"You just haven't noticed it yet."

A few people frowned.

Kola stepped beside him again.

"We've seen the cracks," he said.

"Small ones," someone replied dismissively.

"Small things become big things," Tare said.

The crowd shifted.

But this time…

they didn't react with fear.

They reacted with resistance.

"We can't keep doing this," a woman said firmly.

"Talking about every feeling, every thought…"

"It's too much," another added.

A man stepped forward.

"Sometimes it's better to just move on."

That word echoed.

Move on.

Tare's expression changed slightly.

"That's not moving on," he said quietly.

"That's ignoring."

Silence fell again.

But this silence was different.

Defensive.

Because the truth…

had touched something real.

Kola looked around the crowd.

"Let me ask you something," he said.

"If everything is fine…"

He pointed toward a wall nearby.

"…then why is that still cracking?"

All eyes turned.

A thin line stretched across the wall.

Small.

But spreading.

No one spoke.

Tare stepped forward again.

"This is what it looks like now," he said.

"Not loud. Not violent."

"But still growing."

A young woman crossed her arms.

"So what do you expect us to do?" she asked.

"Live like this forever?"

Tare didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

The answer shocked them.

"Not in fear," he continued quickly.

"But in awareness."

"Always checking ourselves."

"Always speaking the truth."

"Always choosing not to hide."

The crowd reacted immediately.

"That's unrealistic!"

"No one can live like that!"

"It's too much!"

And there it was.

The real problem.

Not fear.

Not anger.

But refusal.

Tare felt it instantly.

The shift in the air.

The presence stirring again.

Stronger this time.

Because this anger…

was different.

It wasn't pain.

It was rejection.

They refuse… the voice whispered faintly.

Tare clenched his fists.

"No…"

But he could feel it.

The cracks in the ground growing slightly.

The air tightening again.

Not explosive.

But steady.

Kola stepped forward suddenly.

"Fine," he said loudly.

"If you won't do it for yourselves…"

He pointed toward Tare.

"Do it because you've seen what happens if you don't."

Silence.

The memory returned.

The destruction.

The fear.

The chaos.

But even that…

was starting to fade.

Because memory weakens over time.

And comfort replaces it.

Tare looked around slowly.

"If you won't choose truth…"

He paused.

"…then something else will choose for you."

The wind rose suddenly.

Stronger than before.

A loud crack echoed from the far end of the town.

CRACK.

People turned in fear.

This time…

it was louder.

Clearer.

Closer.

Tare closed his eyes briefly.

"It's not waiting anymore," he said.

Because now

the force had changed again.

It no longer needed silence.

It no longer needed fear.

It had learned something new.

How to grow…

even when people knew better.

Kola stepped closer to Tare.

"What do we do now?" he asked.

For the first time…

Tare hesitated.

Because this was different.

Before, people didn't understand.

Now…

they did.

And they still refused.

Tare opened his eyes slowly.

"We show them," he said.

Kola frowned.

"Show them what?"

Tare's voice dropped.

"The truth they don't want to face."

Because sometimes…

words are not enough.

Sometimes…

truth has to be seen.

And as the wind moved through Ebirien once again

something deeper began to rise.

Not just anger.

But consequence.

The kind that cannot be ignored.

And this time…

no one would be able to pretend it wasn't happening.
