Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: THE WORLD BEYOND THE GATE

The gate closed behind her.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a simple clang.

But to Victoria Loveth…

It sounded like the end of a chapter she could never return to.

She didn't turn back this time.

She couldn't.

Because something inside her told her if she did, she might not be able to leave.

The road outside the school felt unfamiliar.

Strange.

Even though she had walked it many times before.

Today, it felt different.

Quieter.

Like the world was waiting for her to decide who she wanted to become.

Victoria adjusted the strap of her bag and began to walk slowly.

Students passed her in groups laughing, shouting, already making plans.

"Party tonight!"

"Don't forget to call me!"

"We'll meet again, I promise!"

Promises.

So many promises.

Victoria wondered how many of them would actually come true.

"Victoria! Wait!"

She turned.

Tobi ran toward her again, slightly out of breath like always.

"You're just going to disappear like that?" he asked.

She smiled faintly. "I thought we already said goodbye."

"Not like this," he said.

They stood facing each other.

For the first time that day… neither of them knew what to say.

"So…" Tobi started. "What's next for you?"

Victoria looked ahead.

"I don't know yet," she admitted. "Maybe university… maybe something else."

He nodded. "Same here."

Silence.

Awkward.

Heavy.

"Will you forget me?" Tobi suddenly asked.

Victoria looked at him quickly.

"Why would you ask that?"

He shrugged. "People change."

Victoria stepped closer.

"I might change," she said softly. "But I won't forget where I came from… or who was there with me."

Tobi smiled slightly.

"That's good enough for me."

They began walking together.

Slowly.

As if dragging time itself.

"You know," Tobi said, "I used to hate school."

Victoria laughed. "You still hate school."

"True," he admitted. "But… I think I'll miss it."

Victoria nodded.

"Not the classes," he added quickly.

"The people."

She understood.

Because she felt the same way.

When they reached the junction where their paths separated, they stopped.

This was it.

The real goodbye.

Tobi looked at her.

"Call me," he said.

"I will."

"Don't lie."

Victoria smiled. "I won't."

He hesitated.

Then pulled her into a quick hug.

It wasn't long.

But it was enough.

"Take care of yourself, Victoria Loveth," he said.

"You too, Tobi."

And just like that…

They walked in opposite directions.

That evening felt too quiet.

Victoria sat by the window in her room, still wearing part of her uniform.

She hadn't changed yet.

Maybe she didn't want to.

Her phone buzzed.

Messages flooded in.

Class group chats.

Pictures.

Videos.

People already posting:

"Last day with my people!"

"Goodbye secondary school!"

"New chapter begins!"

Victoria scrolled slowly.

Smiling at some.

Pausing at others.

Then she saw a message from Tobi.

Tobi: You better not forget me o.

Victoria smiled and replied:

Victoria: Impossible.

She dropped her phone and leaned back.

The room felt different now.

Like it was no longer a place to rest after school…

But a place where her future would begin.

Night came slowly.

Victoria stood up and walked to her mirror again.

The same mirror she looked into that morning.

But now…

She looked different.

Not physically.

But something in her eyes had changed.

She stared at her reflection for a long moment.

"Who am I now?" she whispered.

The question hung in the air.

Unanswered.

But not empty.

Because for the first time…

She had the chance to decide.

She took off her uniform slowly.

Folding it carefully.

Placing it on the chair.

Not as something she would wear again…

But as something she would remember.

Outside, the world continued.

Cars moved.

People talked.

Life went on.

But inside Victoria Loveth…

A new story had just begun
