The control chamber sat sunk into the cliff above the freed road, its rusted door furred with thick gray lichen. Hajin held Olan's seized rubbing flat against the stone, matching its scratched route lines to the grooves beside the frame.
"Okay, the paper says door, the cliff says door, and the door says piss off," he announced, slapping the rust.
Four road custodians waited back from the threshold, keys on cords around their necks, and none reached for them.
Mott, the eldest of them, scratched his stubble, "We greased those hinges every spring for forty years, sir."
"Then the fort took the road, and the door started asking questions."
"Doors don't ask questions, old man, they just open or they don't."
Mott pointed one crooked finger at the lintel, "Touch the plate and listen."
