Nari would later count the corridor's opening conversation eleven times, hating that her count was accurate.
The stairs ended at a corridor so long that its sixty lamps merged into one orange smear far away. Each door along it was shut, every lamp lit, every tile spotless, nothing out of place anywhere at all.
"Who builds a hallway this long and forgets to put a tavern in it?" Rumi asked, hands behind her head.
"Maybe the tavern's at the end, Pounce, that's where they hide the good ones," Hajin said.
Uncapping her charcoal, Nari whispered, "Let's check first."
"Sixty lamps, Boss, I counted them twice and got two different sixties."
Nose wrinkling, Juna said, "The air smells of lamp oil and nothing else, no scent of fear, nobody has walked here in years."
"Then we're the first guests, how exciting," Cessy murmured, leaning on Ferra's shoulder.
"I prefer to be the last guests, in and out, home by dinner," Didi sniffed.
