By Thursday, things had settled into something that almost felt like a routine.
Not the old routine.
A different one.
Kerem still came late sometimes. Not always. Just enough that it wasn't surprising anymore. Aylin still arrived early, still sat the same way, still kept her notebook hidden like it was something fragile.
But now—
They talked.
Not constantly. Not about anything important.
Just… small things.
And somehow, that made the days go faster.
Last period felt especially slow.
The kind of slow where even the clock seemed tired.
The teacher had given them something to work on individually, which really just meant the classroom was quiet in a loose, unfocused way. Papers flipping, chairs shifting, someone tapping their foot somewhere in the back.
Aylin finished her work ten minutes early.
She read over it once.
Twice.
Then stopped pretending she needed to check it again.
Carefully, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her earphones.
She didn't look at Kerem when she plugged them in.
She just pressed play.
The music was soft.
Not loud enough to block everything out, just enough to make the room feel further away.
Aylin leaned slightly forward, resting her elbow on the desk, listening.
For a few minutes, it was easy to forget where she was.
"What are you listening to?"
She almost jumped.
Aylin pulled one earphone out, turning her head.
Kerem was looking at her.
Not teasing.
Just asking.
"…Nothing," she said automatically.
He raised an eyebrow. "You had earphones in."
"I mean—it's just music."
"Yeah," he said. "That's what I asked."
Aylin hesitated.
Then looked down at the wire in her hand.
"…You wouldn't like it."
"Wow," he said. "You don't even know what I like."
She didn't answer.
Because she didn't.
There was a pause.
Not long.
But long enough that she could've just put the earphone back in and ended it there.
Instead—
She held one out.
Just slightly.
Like she might change her mind.
Kerem looked at it.
Then at her.
"…You sure?"
Aylin nodded once.
He took it.
Their fingers didn't touch.
But it was close enough that she noticed.
They sat like that for a second, not really knowing how to adjust.
Then Kerem leaned a little closer so the wire wouldn't pull.
Their shoulders almost touched.
Almost.
Aylin stared straight ahead.
Very focused on not reacting to anything.
"…This is sad."
She frowned slightly. "It's not sad."
"It sounds sad."
"It's just slow."
"Slow and sad are basically the same thing."
"They're not."
Kerem tilted his head a little, listening more carefully.
"…Okay, maybe not sad. Just… quiet."
Aylin didn't respond.
That was closer.
They stayed like that.
Listening.
Not talking.
The classroom noise faded again, but this time it felt different.
Not just distant.
Smaller.
"It fits you," Kerem said after a while.
Aylin blinked. "What?"
"The music."
"…What does that mean?"
He shrugged slightly. "I don't know. It just does."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"Yeah, I know."
Aylin looked down at her desk.
"…It helps me think," she said, a little quieter than before.
Kerem nodded.
"Yeah," he said. "I get that."
She glanced at him briefly.
"You do?"
"Sometimes," he said. "When it's not loud."
Aylin didn't ask what that meant.
But she thought about it.
A few more seconds passed.
Then a minute.
Then another.
Neither of them said anything about giving the earphone back.
At some point, Kerem shifted slightly.
Not away.
Just enough that their shoulders brushed for a second.
Aylin froze.
Not visibly.
Just… inside.
Kerem didn't move away immediately.
But neither did she.
The bell rang.
Too loud.
Too sudden.
They both pulled back at the same time.
Aylin reached up and took the earphone back quickly, wrapping the wire around her fingers like she needed something to do.
Kerem rubbed the back of his neck slightly.
"…That was better than class," he said.
Aylin nodded.
"…Yeah."
They packed their things in silence.
Not awkward.
Just… quieter than usual.
As they stood up, Kerem glanced at her.
"You should show me more of that stuff," he said.
Aylin looked at him.
"…Maybe."
It wasn't a yes.
But it wasn't a no either.
They walked out of the classroom together again.
Same as the last few days.
Same hallway.
Same slow pace.
But this time—
There was something different in the silence.
Not empty.
Just… full of things neither of them said.
That night, Aylin opened her notebook.
She didn't reread anything.
She just turned to a new page and started writing.
"They sat close enough that it should have felt strange.
But it didn't.
It just felt… quieter."
She paused.
Then added one more line.
"And for some reason, that scared her a little."
Aylin stared at the sentence for a while.
Then closed the notebook.
