Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 13 : The Rules That Don’t Save You

No one moved.

Not after Elara spoke.

"What if… it's not someone outside?"

The question didn't sound new.

That was the problem.

It sounded—

familiar.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He just stood there.

Looking at her.

Not like someone surprised.

Like someone who had been waiting—

for her to say exactly that.

"You're closer than before," Daniel said.

His voice was quiet.

Not cold.

Not urgent.

Tired.

That was what made it worse.

Elara swallowed.

"I don't want to be closer."

Her voice cracked.

"I don't even know what I'm getting closer to."

Daniel nodded once.

"You don't," he said.

"You never do."

The words settled heavily.

Never.

"How many times?" Liam asked.

His voice wasn't calm anymore.

It sounded controlled—

but strained underneath.

Daniel looked at him longer this time.

"As many as it takes for you to stop asking that question," he said.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one that doesn't break you faster."

Silence.

Elara let out a small, shaky breath.

"I think I'm already breaking."

No one disagreed.

Daniel looked at her.

"You are," he said.

"But not in the way you think."

Her hands trembled.

"Then explain it in a way I can understand."

Daniel hesitated.

For the first time.

And that—

was more terrifying than anything else he had said.

"…There are rules," he said finally.

The word made the air feel tighter.

"Rules?" Aaron repeated.

Daniel nodded.

"They don't protect you."

A pause.

"But they're all you have."

Elara closed her eyes briefly.

"Then start talking."

Daniel exhaled.

Slow.

Heavy.

"Rule one," he said.

"You don't feel the reset."

Elara's eyes opened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means it happens between moments."

A pause.

"You blink. You breathe. You look away—"

"And everything shifts."

Her chest tightened.

"That's impossible."

Daniel didn't argue.

"Rule two," he continued.

"You don't remember what you've already said."

Elara felt something inside her drop.

"That's why you repeat yourself."

"That's why you question yourself."

"That's why you think something's wrong with you."

Her breathing became uneven.

"Because there is something wrong," she whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"There's something wrong with the structure."

The word didn't help.

It made things worse.

"Rule three," Daniel said.

"The more you remember—"

He stopped.

Like he didn't want to finish it.

"Say it," Liam said.

Daniel looked at him.

"The more unstable everything becomes."

Silence.

The room felt heavier.

Elara stepped back.

"That's why this feels worse," Liam murmured.

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And the last one?" Elara asked.

Her voice barely held together.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He looked at all of them.

Then—

at her.

"There's always one person who gets closer."

Elara's chest tightened.

"No."

But she already knew.

"This time—" Daniel said softly.

"It's you."

Her breath stopped.

"No."

But something inside her—

recognized it.

And that was the worst part.

Her head throbbed again.

Harder.

Sharper.

Memories—or fragments—pushed through.

Not complete.

Never complete.

She saw herself—

standing in the same room.

Saying something.

Crying.

Arguing.

"Stop," she whispered.

But it didn't stop.

"…don't let me start again…"

Her eyes snapped open.

Her breathing broke.

"I said that," she whispered.

Daniel didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

"I said that," she repeated.

This time—

she wasn't asking.

Liam looked away.

Aaron didn't move.

That silence—

felt wrong.

"Say something," Elara said.

No one did.

Her voice cracked.

"Say something!"

Aaron finally spoke.

"…We can still fix this."

The moment the words left his mouth—

everything shifted.

Subtly.

But enough.

Elara frowned.

Fix?

That didn't belong here.

"That's not what you said before," she said.

Aaron blinked.

"What?"

"You said something else."

"I didn't."

"You did."

Liam turned slightly.

"Yeah," he said.

"You did."

Aaron frowned.

"I don't remember that."

Of course.

Elara felt something collapse inside her.

"None of us remember anything," she whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

"That's not true."

Liam looked at him.

"You remember," Daniel said.

Liam didn't deny it.

"That's not helping," he muttered.

"No," Daniel said.

"It isn't."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then Elara spoke again.

Quiet.

Breaking.

"If we know the rules…"

She swallowed.

"…then how do we get out?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Not right away.

And that hesitation—

said everything.

"…You don't," he said.

Her world tilted.

"What?"

"You don't get out," Daniel repeated.

"You endure."

The word felt wrong.

Cruel.

"That's not an answer," she said.

"It's the only one that's honest."

Her breath shook.

"That's not enough."

Daniel's voice softened.

"It has to be."

Silence swallowed the room.

Elara's hands trembled.

Her thoughts slipped again.

Everything felt like it had already happened.

Everything felt—

used.

Worn.

Like they were repeating something they never finished.

"Why?" she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

Long.

Carefully.

Then—

quietly—

"Because you're the one who keeps asking."

Her breath stopped.

"What?"

"You don't let it end."

Her vision blurred.

"That's not—"

"You keep trying to understand it," Daniel said.

"And every time you get closer—"

He stopped.

Like he didn't want to finish.

"Say it," she said.

Her voice breaking.

"You make it start again."

Silence.

Complete.

Irreversible.

Something inside her gave way.

Not suddenly.

But completely.

Her breath trembled.

And then—

quietly—

like she was afraid of hearing her own voice—

she whispered:

"What if…"

She stopped.

Her thoughts slipping even as she tried to hold onto them.

Her chest rising, uneven.

Her voice barely there.

"What if the truth…"

A pause.

Her eyes unfocused.

"…isn't something we're supposed to survive?"
