Chapter 44 : The Network Rebuilds
Ten hands. Ten threads.
The expansion happened over ten days—careful, methodical recruitment that moved through Alma's channels before reaching my direct involvement. Three Marthas first: one at the district laundry facility with access to Commander household gossip, one at the administrative building cafeteria where Winslow's staff ate, and one at the medical center where Eyes officers received their health screenings.
Strategic positioning. Each new node placed for maximum intelligence value.
Then three Handmaids: one in the Lawrence household where Emily had been posted before her exposure, one in the Pryce household where the district's senior Commander lived, and one in a mid-level household that connected to three others through Ceremony rotation schedules.
Network topology. Redundant pathways. Information flow optimization.
Each recruitment required a Knowledge Share initialization—the first transfer that established the mental link, that gave the new node access to basic coordination protocols. In the early days, five such transfers would have left me bleeding and barely functional. Now, with the Active Router phase of the power fully developed, I could handle ten without the crushing migraines that had limited my operations before.
The power is growing. Adapting. Learning from use.
I can feel all ten links now—not as individual connections, but as a system. A network that hums at the edge of my awareness like background noise.
The tenth node came online at fourteen hundred on the tenth day. A Martha named Sarah, recruited through Alma's personal recommendation, initialized with protocols that included emergency evacuation routes and dead-drop timing.
Ten active nodes. More than I've ever maintained. More than I lost during the crackdown.
The network is rebuilt. Better than before.
---
The Eyes patrol appeared at sixteen hundred.
I was at checkpoint seven, processing the afternoon's shopping traffic, when Discovery fired with the cold signature of institutional surveillance. Three black vehicles, moving through the district with the purposeful coordination of an organized sweep.
Unexpected. This patrol wasn't on any schedule I've seen.
Winslow's randomization. He's deploying sweeps without warning to test response patterns.
The shopping district was active—dozens of Handmaids and Marthas moving through the market stalls, several of them nodes in my newly rebuilt network. If the Eyes patrol reached the market during the coordination window, dead-drops would be exposed, contact patterns would be visible, and Winslow would have exactly the evidence he was hunting for.
Three minutes until the patrol enters the market. Not enough time for traditional warning.
But maybe enough time for something else.
I reached for Knowledge Share—not the targeted transfer I'd been practicing for months, but something broader. A pulse. A single signal pushed to all ten nodes simultaneously.
Danger.
The word wasn't words. It was sensation—the gut-level awareness of threat, the instinctive freeze response that predators triggered in prey. I pushed it outward like a wave, feeling the network light up as the signal propagated.
Three nodes responded instantly.
I watched through my checkpoint position as a Martha at the bread vendor's stall froze mid-transaction, her hand still extended for change. Her head turned slightly—not toward the approaching patrol, but toward nothing in particular—and then she smoothly abandoned her dead-drop approach and walked in the opposite direction.
A Handmaid near the vegetable stalls did the same thing. And a third Martha, visible at the edge of the market, reversed course without any visible trigger.
They felt it. The pulse reached them and they responded.
Four more nodes responded within minutes—slower reactions, less instinctive, but effective. They adjusted their routes, delayed their contacts, moved away from the dead-drops they'd been approaching.
Three nodes didn't react at all. They continued their normal patterns, oblivious to the warning I'd sent.
Untrained. They received the pulse but didn't know how to interpret it.
Mark them for pulse recognition training. The capability only works if everyone knows how to respond.
The Eyes patrol swept through the market without finding anything suspicious. The dead-drops remained untouched. The contact patterns stayed invisible. And somewhere in his administrative office, Winslow probably noted the negative result and adjusted his next randomized deployment.
The pulse works. At scale. With ten nodes.
This is what the Active Router phase was building toward.
---
The evening's dead-drop held the network's response to the pulse.
Most nodes reported the sensation—"felt something strange," "sudden unease," "instinct to move"—without understanding what had caused it. The three who'd responded instantly described it more precisely: "knew something was wrong," "felt the warning in my chest," "like someone grabbed my shoulder."
The untrained nodes felt it but didn't act. The trained ones acted immediately.
I need to train all ten on pulse recognition. Make the response automatic.
One message stood out from the others. A new Handmaid node, recruited three days earlier, had written:
I don't know who you are but I haven't felt safe in three years until today.
I read the words twice, letting them settle into my memory.
Three years. Since Gilead consolidated control. Since the world she knew ended.
And a single pulse—a moment of coordinated protection—made her feel safe for the first time since.
That's what the network is for. Not intelligence gathering. Not resistance operations.
Safety. For people who've forgotten what it feels like.
I burned the messages and walked back to the barracks with the pulse capability sitting new in my awareness.
Ten nodes. Network Pulse operational. Active Router phase confirmed.
Twice the network I lost. Rebuilt in half the time. Growing faster under pressure.
The question I won't ask myself: is growing faster under pressure growing smarter, or just growing reckless?
The question didn't need answering. Not yet. Winslow's investigation was ongoing, his methodology was tightening the district, and I had six months—maybe less—to build something that could survive whatever he threw at it.
The network is rebuilt. The pulse works. The capability is proven.
Now I need to know what Winslow's planning next.
And Serena's intelligence channel is about to produce its highest-value take.
