Chapter 331 - A Wilderness Rush

Chapter 331: A Wilderness Rush

The suffocating tension stretched thin, a wire pulled taut and ready to snap. Bloodlust hung heavy in the stagnant air.

"Bang! Bang! Bang—!"

A rapid volley of crisp gunshots shattered the deathly standoff without a sliver of warning. Copper-jacketed bullets tore through the space between the two factions. Yet, their trajectory wasn't aimed at the Cunning Hares. The lethal crossfire zeroed in straight toward Perlman, who was currently cowering behind the elite operatives of Hollow Special Operations Section 6.

"Clang—!"

A blinding flash of cold steel streaked across the battlefield like a thunderbolt. Hoshimi Miyabi moved. Her reflexes defied human limits; the very millisecond the gunpowder ignited, her katana had already cleared its scabbard.

With terrifying precision, she painted a series of flawless, silver arcs through the empty air. Crisp, metallic shrieks echoed as her blade intercepted the supersonic projectiles. Sparks erupted in brilliant orange showers as the sliced bullets clattered uselessly against the concrete.

Miyabi planted her boots firmly in front of a wide-eyed, trembling Perlman. Her fox ears twitched. When her gaze locked onto Nicole, her eyes were as sharp and unforgiving as the edge of her drawn katana.

"Nicole," Miyabi's voice dripped with absolute frost. "I did not expect you to stoop to colluding with mercenaries. To set up an ambush with assassins... how low."

"What?!" Nicole shrieked, her body twisting into an agile backhandspring to narrowly dodge a stray bullet that chipped the ground where she just stood. "You're slandering me!"

Landing in a crouch, Nicole glared back. "You martial arts fanatic fox, you've even learned how to shift the blame! Weren't you the ones who arranged this armed ambush in advance?!"

A beat passed. Another hail of bullets chewed through the barricades.

Nicole's emerald eyes widened. The realization hit her like a physical blow. "Wait... no!" She spun toward the treeline. "There's a third party! Someone else set their sights on this place!"

The gunfire escalated into a deafening roar. The standoff instantly disintegrated into absolute chaos.

Dozens of masked figures poured from the perimeter. Clad in unified, unmarked black combat fatigues, these unknown assailants wielded heavy, standard-issue assault rifles. They didn't fight like disorganized thugs; they advanced in tight, systematic tactical formations, laying down a withering barrage of suppressive fire. Their objective was glaringly obvious. Every muzzle flash pointed directly toward Section 6—and the cowering Perlman behind them.

Just as the crossfire threatened to shred the area to ribbons, the deafening roar of a heavy engine drowned out the gunfire. A heavily modified, battered, yet monstrously sturdy rig smashed straight through the perimeter fencing. Its massive tires screeched violently against the asphalt, kicking up a blinding smokescreen of dust and debris.

Behind the reinforced windshield, gripping the oversized steering wheel, sat the petite figure of Piper Wheel.

"Get in the rig!" Piper hollered over the engine's mechanical growl, her eyes locked onto Wise and Anby.

Every microsecond counted. Anby's combat instincts flared. She grabbed the collar of a slightly dazed Wise, yanking him forward with surprising strength, while flashing a quick tactical hand signal to the little Bangboo, Eous.

The trio sprinted through the hail of stray bullets toward the roaring vehicle.

Reading their trajectory, Piper slammed the brakes and cranked the wheel. The massive truck executed a brutal, sliding tail-whip, the heavy rear cargo doors swinging open to align perfectly with their path. Anby didn't hesitate. She shoved Wise bodily into the dark cargo hold, vaulted up off the bumper, and rolled inside just as Eous bounded in after them, its metallic feet clanking against the floorboards.

In the chaos, a desperate Perlman had scrambled away from Section 6's defensive line, diving blindly toward the closest escape route. A stray boot—likely Anby's—kicked the whimpering executive the rest of the way into the truck bed.

Almost simultaneously, Piper slammed her boot down on the accelerator. The heavy rig roared like a wounded beast, smashing straight through a concrete barricade on the opposite side of the lot. Carrying Wise, Anby, Eous, and a blubbering Perlman, the truck shot out of the kill zone like an arrow released from a heavy bow.

Across the chaotic lot, Billy Kid wasn't idle. Taking full advantage of the distraction, the cyborg gunslinger hotwired an abandoned military jeep parked near the perimeter.

"Hop in, boss!" Billy yelled, revving the engine.

Nicole and Nekomata didn't need to be told twice. The feline demi-human vaulted over the roll cage with acrobatic grace, while Nicole vaulted into the passenger seat, her briefcase clutched tightly to her chest. The jeep's tires spun, biting into the dirt as Billy floored it. They tailed closely behind Piper's heavy rig, tearing away from the impromptu battlefield and leaving the furious crossfire—and the bewildered operatives of Section 6—far behind in the dust.

But the crisis was far from neutralized. The unknown assailants had executed a careful, multi-layered tactical plan.

Barely a minute after Piper's rig tore onto the rugged dirt road leading out into the desolate wilderness, the menacing, collective roar of high-octane engines echoed from the rear.

Glancing into the cracked side mirror, Wise's jaw tightened. A massive convoy of hostiles was closing the gap. Heavily modified motorcycles, rugged off-road buggies, and armored military jeeps—all plastered with jagged rebel insignias—tore across the wasteland. They swarmed over the uneven terrain, pursuing the fleeing targets like a pack of starved hyenas that had caught the scent of fresh blood.

"Tsk, they're sticking to us like glue!" Piper grumbled. Her small hands gripped the oversized steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. Her face was drawn taut with concentration, her eyes burning with an intense, unyielding focus.

She violently jerked the wheel left and right, throwing the heavy truck across the uneven dirt tracks. She used every dip, every jagged boulder, and every treacherous ridge the wilderness offered as cover, desperately attempting to break the pursuers' line of sight.

The rebel vehicles, however, boasted terrifying off-road performance, and their drivers were no amateurs. They matched Piper's erratic maneuvers turn for turn, maintaining a lethal proximity.

Heavy machine-gun fire rained down upon the fleeing rig. Armor-piercing rounds hammered against the truck's reinforced rear plating, producing a deafening, metallic staccato that rattled the teeth of everyone inside. Even with Piper pushing her miraculous driving skills to the absolute limit, she could only manage to maintain a razor-thin, dangerously fragile gap between them and the pursuing convoy.

using their superior acceleration, three of the rebel jeeps broke from the pack, clinging to the truck's blind spots like a festering plague. Gunners mounted in the rear beds unleashed continuous, sweeping bursts of automatic fire, their tracers glowing hot as they aimed specifically for the truck's massive rear tires.

A high-speed, visceral chase erupted across the barren expanse. The heavy rig and the pursuing jeeps caught air as they launched over the deeply rutted dirt roads, slamming back down with bone-jarring force. Choking clouds of yellow dust plumed into the sky. The mechanical scream of redlining engines and the relentless chatter of gunfire bled together into a chaotic, deafening roar of survival.

Four rebel vehicles suddenly fanned out, accelerating hard to box the truck in from all sides.

A sharp, decisive glint flashed in Piper's eyes.

She slammed the clutch, yanked the heavy emergency brake lever, and cranked the steering wheel all the way to the right in one fluid, impossibly synchronized motion.

"Screech—!!!"

The agonizing shriek of burning rubber tore through the wasteland air. Under Piper's masterful, borderline insane control, the multi-ton truck initiated a violent, high-speed J-turn. The massive chassis swung out, executing a lethally tight tail-whip drift that defied the laws of physics.

The sheer centrifugal force threatened to flip the colossal vehicle entirely. The left tires lifted dangerously off the dirt, the truck tilting sideways. Yet, at the absolute final microsecond, Piper feathered the accelerator and slammed the wheel back. The heavy tires slammed back down, biting into the earth and regaining traction. The rig surged forward, narrowly slipping through the tightening net of rebel vehicles.

The lead pursuer wasn't so lucky. Blinded by the sudden maneuver and the massive dust cloud, the rebel driver slammed on the brakes too late. The jeep plowed horizontally into the three other vehicles that had just converged to block Piper.

A thunderous explosion ripped through the wilderness, sending a massive fireball of twisted metal and black smoke spiraling into the sky.

"Phew..." Piper blew a stray lock of hair out of her face, letting out a short breath. But her hands never left the wheel, and her foot remained pinned to the floorboard. The battered truck continued to tear across the desolate plains, desperately hunting for a geographical choke point to lose the remaining stragglers.

But their momentary relief was shattered. None of them had anticipated the sheer military-grade hardware the rebels had brought to the field.

Shoulder-mounted, heat-seeking missiles.

The shrill lock-on warning echoed in the cabin. Piper yanked the wheel, throwing the truck into a violent zigzag. She maneuvered the heavy rig across the uneven terrain like a slippery eel, miraculously dodging the first two guided projectiles that streaked toward them on trails of white-hot exhaust.

The missiles slammed into the dirt just meters away. Deafening shockwaves rattled the truck's chassis, sending geysers of pulverized rock and soaring pillars of flame into the air. Scorching thermal waves and jagged shrapnel peppered the truck's reinforced plating like a deadly hail storm.

"Hold on tight!" Piper screamed over the ringing in their ears. She bit down hard on her lower lip, a sheen of cold sweat breaking out across her forehead. She wrestled with the steering column, burying the gas pedal, desperately trying to plunge the truck into the thick, black smoke of the explosions to break the missile locks.

But the enemy's tactical prediction was too sharp.

A third missile broke through the smoke screen. Like a ghostly harbinger of death, the warhead screamed through the air at a brutally sharp angle, perfectly calculating and intercepting the truck's evasive trajectory.

"It's over!" Piper's pupils shrank to pinpricks. She threw her entire body weight into the steering wheel, attempting one final, desperate swerve.

It was too late.

"Boom—!!!"

A cataclysmic detonation erupted mere inches from the truck's left rear axle. Though it narrowly missed a direct impact, the kinetic force was absolute. A terrifying, concussive shockwave slammed into the vehicle's flank like the invisible hammer of a god.

The multi-ton rig instantly lost its center of gravity. The massive tires left the earth. With the horrific, ear-splitting shriek of twisting metal and shattering glass, the truck was launched into the air, flipping end-over-end like a cheap plastic toy discarded by a petulant child.

Its violent, airborne trajectory sent it hurtling directly toward a massive, swirling spatial distortion just off the roadside—a Hollow, pulsing with erratic, sickly-sweet energy fluctuations.

Inside the cabin, the world violently inverted. Gravity vanished, replaced by a sickening weightlessness. Wise's vision blurred into a chaotic, dizzying vortex of shattered light and crushing shadows as the truck plummeted toward the anomaly's gaping maw.

Just before the suffocating darkness of the Hollow swallowed them whole, Wise's fading peripheral vision caught a sudden flash of movement.

A swift, electric-blue silhouette tore through the dust. Moving at an abnormal, blinding speed, the figure streaked after them like a falling meteor, perfectly tracking their doomed trajectory. In the blink of an eye, the mysterious figure flashed past the debris and dove straight into the entrance of the Hollow right behind them.
