Chapter 7: WHISPERS IN THE DARK
The Shade's warning echoed in Garrett's mind as darkness swallowed the Old Mill compound.
"Do not wake the others."
He sat in the barracks doorway, back against the frame, knife across his knees. The main building loomed black against a sky scattered with unfamiliar stars. Somewhere inside, the Shade continued its eternal routine. Somewhere deeper, in the mine shafts below, the others waited.
Sleep would have been smart. His body screamed for it—four days of travel, evasion, stress. But every time he closed his eyes, he imagined something crawling up from the depths. Something that didn't appreciate visitors.
[ALERT: SUPERNATURAL ENTITY APPROACHING]
[CLASSIFICATION: WHISPER-CLASS]
[THREAT LEVEL: MINIMAL]
[DISTANCE: 200 METERS AND CLOSING]
Garrett's hand tightened on the knife. Not from inside—from outside. Something was coming toward the compound, and it wasn't the Shade.
The darkness shifted at the treeline. Not movement exactly—more like the night itself folding wrong, creating a space where light should have been but wasn't.
[DISTANCE: 100 METERS]
He stood slowly, pressing himself against the doorframe. The knife was probably useless against a spirit, but holding it made him feel less like prey.
[DISTANCE: 50 METERS]
The wrongness crossed the compound's perimeter. Stopped. The air grew colder—not weather-cold, something deeper. The cold of places that had never seen sun.
"You wear his face."
The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. High and thin, like wind through a crack in the world.
Garrett's blood froze.
"You are not him."
"It knows," he realized. The Whisper—because that's what this was, had to be—knew he wasn't the original Garrett Ward. Knew he was something wearing a dead man's skin.
"What do you want?" His voice came out steadier than he felt.
Silence stretched. The cold deepened.
"To follow. To watch. To remember."
[WHISPER-CLASS ENTITY: BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS]
[THIS ENTITY IS DRAWN TO DEATH AND TRANSITION]
[IT SENSED HOST'S SOUL TRANSFERENCE AND FOLLOWED]
[CURRENT STANCE: CURIOUS, NOT HOSTILE]
Curious. The thing had tracked him across miles of wilderness because it was curious about what he was. About the binding that had put his soul in another man's corpse.
"You've been following since the caravan?"
"Since the grave. Since you climbed out. Since you became something... interesting."
The binding. The 72 hours of agony in the void. The System rewriting his soul. Something in that process had left a mark, a scent, a trail that supernatural entities could follow.
"Great. I'm ghost catnip."
[ENTITY INTERACTION OPTIONS:]
[PURIFY: 50 SP — DISPERSES ENTITY PERMANENTLY]
[BIND: 100 SP — ESTABLISHES SERVICE CONTRACT]
[IGNORE: 0 SP — ENTITY REMAINS INDEPENDENT]
He had 15 SP. Not enough for either active option.
"I can't afford to deal with you right now," Garrett said, gambling on honesty. "But that will change. When it does, you can serve me or be destroyed. Those are your options."
Laughter. Like ice cracking on a frozen pond.
"Bold. The little living thing threatens me."
"Not threatening. Explaining. I'm going to build something here. Something that will attract more death, more transition, more interesting things for you to watch. You can be part of that, or you can be nothing."
The cold deepened further. Garrett's breath misted in the air.
"And if I choose to take you instead? Now, while you are weak?"
[WARNING: ENTITY AGGRESSION THRESHOLD APPROACHED]
[RECOMMENDATION: DE-ESCALATE]
"Then you get one meal instead of a career," Garrett said. "Short-term thinking. I expected better from something that's existed as long as you have."
The silence stretched. The cold held.
Then, slowly, it began to fade.
"I accept. For now." The voice grew distant, as if moving away. "Build your kingdom, little new thing. I will watch. I will wait. I will remember what you become."
The wrongness at the treeline dissolved. The night returned to normal darkness—still dangerous, still full of threats, but no longer touched by something from beyond.
[INTERACTION COMPLETE]
[WHISPER ENTITY: TEMPORARY TRUCE ESTABLISHED]
[CI EXPOSURE: +1]
[CURRENT CI: 8 — CLEAN]
Garrett sat back down, legs suddenly weak. His hands were shaking. The knife nearly slipped from his grip.
"I just negotiated with a ghost. With a thing that wanted to consume my soul. And I talked my way out of it."
The absurdity of his situation crashed over him like a wave. Four days ago, he'd been worried about quarterly reports. Now he was sitting in a haunted mining complex, making deals with supernatural entities, planning to build a kingdom in a world that shouldn't exist.
His apartment. His coffee shop. His plants on the windowsill.
Gone. All of it. Replaced by this—blood and dust and things that whispered in the dark.
[EMOTIONAL DISTRESS DETECTED]
[REMINDER: SURVIVAL REQUIRES FOCUS]
[CURRENT QUEST: SURVIVE 7 DAYS — 4/7 COMPLETE]
Four days down. Three to go.
Garrett forced himself to breathe. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. The military training he'd received in his past life—basic, not combat, just enough to understand logistics in a military context—hadn't prepared him for this. But the principles applied.
"Assess. Adapt. Act."
He had a base. The Old Mill was defensible, had water, could be secured. He had a truce with the Shade inside and the Whisper outside. He had supplies for a few more days.
He could build from this.
The knife went back on his lap. His eyes returned to the darkness. The Whisper was out there somewhere, watching, waiting. The Shade was inside, walking its eternal routine. The others slept in the depths.
And Garrett Cole, formerly of Earth, currently of nowhere, sat guard over a future that was his to build or lose.
Dawn found him still awake.
