Chapter 45 - CHAPTER 44: MILES DON’T ASK PERMISSION

🌍

The goodbye didn't feel like an ending. But it didn't feel like a beginning either. It felt like a pause— one neither of them fully wanted.

Kenzo left early in the morning. The sky still soft. Still half-asleep.

Sofia stood with him at the terminal. Quiet. Composed. Not because she didn't feel anything. But because feeling everything all at once— would have broken her.

"I'll message you when I land," Kenzo said.

Sofia nodded. "Okay." A pause. Then softer— "Be safe."

Kenzo smiled faintly. "I will."

But neither of them moved yet. Because moving— would make it real.

Kenzo looked at her. Longer than usual. "I don't want this to feel like I'm leaving you behind," he said quietly.

Sofia shook her head gently. "You're not." A pause. "You're just going somewhere I'm not right now."

That— was the truth. Not painful. Not sweet. Just honest.

Kenzo exhaled. "I'll call you tonight."

Sofia nodded. "I'll be here."

And that was it. No dramatic goodbye. No collapsing emotions. Just two people trying to be strong enough for what came next.

The first few days were… careful. Messages came on time. Calls happened. Video screens filled with tired smiles.

Kenzo talked about his new place. New routines. New pressure.

Sofia listened. Really listened. And told him about her days too. Small things. Nothing heavy.

It worked— at first. But distance has a way of changing rhythm. Not suddenly. But slowly. One missed call. Then a delayed reply. Then a conversation that felt shorter than it used to.

Sofia noticed first. Of course she did. She sat on her bed one night— phone in her hand.

His message: "Sorry, I've been swamped. I'll call you tomorrow."

She stared at it for a long time. Not upset. Not angry. Just aware. Because she had seen this pattern before. Not the same one. But something familiar. Not abandonment. But distance forming where closeness used to be.

Meanwhile— Kenzo sat in his room overseas. Surrounded by deadlines. Noise. Pressure. And still— he thought about her. Every day. But thinking— wasn't the same as showing up.

One night— he finally called.

Sofia answered quickly. "Hey," he said.

"Hey," she replied.

A pause. Longer than before. "How are you?" Kenzo asked.

Sofia hesitated. Then answered honestly. "I'm okay." Not happy. Not sad. Just okay.

That word— landed differently this time.

Kenzo noticed. "You sound tired," he said gently.

Sofia let out a small breath. "Just busy." A pause. Then she added— "And a little… far from you."

Kenzo closed his eyes briefly. "I know," he admitted.

Silence. Because this wasn't something they could fix in one call.

"I don't want us to drift," he said.

Sofia nodded slowly. "Neither do I."

But neither of them said the harder truth. That drifting doesn't always feel like falling apart. Sometimes— it just feels like growing quieter.

"I'm trying," Kenzo said.

Sofia didn't question it. Not this time. "I know you are," she said softly.

And that— was the problem. Trying was no longer the question. Staying connected— was.

After the call ended— Sofia sat in silence. Not broken. Not emotional. Just thinking. Because love across distance wasn't about big moments. It was about the small ones. The consistent ones. The repeated ones. And she wasn't sure yet— if they were still repeating enough.
