Chapter 40 - CHAPTER 39: WHAT WE ARE NOW

💖

The air felt different after that. Lighter. Not because everything was suddenly perfect— but because nothing was unfinished anymore. No "what ifs." No "maybes." Just truth.

That night— they didn't go anywhere special. No café. No courtyard. They just walked. Side by side. The silence between them wasn't heavy. It wasn't careful. It was… comfortable.

Kenzo glanced at her. "You handled that really well," he said.

Sofia gave a small smile. "I just said what I already knew."

He nodded. "And what's that?"

She stopped walking. Turned to him. "That I don't want anything else."

Kenzo's chest tightened— but not from fear. From something deeper.

"And I'm not choosing you because it's easy," she added. A pause. "I'm choosing you because I know exactly what it takes now."

That— meant more than any confession. Because this wasn't blind love anymore. It was aware. Intentional. Real.

Kenzo stepped closer. "I don't think I understood that before," he admitted.

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "Understood what?"

"That choosing someone isn't a one-time decision." A small breath. "It's something you keep doing… even when it's hard."

Sofia nodded slowly. "Yes."

A quiet moment passed. Then Kenzo spoke again. "I want to ask you something."

Sofia looked at him. "Okay."

He hesitated. Not from doubt— but from wanting to get it right. "What are we now?"

The question didn't feel uncertain. It felt like… clarity waiting to be named.

Sofia smiled softly. Not shy. Not unsure. "We're not starting over," she said. Kenzo listened. "We're not going back either." A step closer. "We're something new."

That answer— felt right. Because they weren't who they used to be. And they weren't trying to recreate something broken. They had rebuilt. Slowly. Carefully. Together.

Kenzo let out a quiet breath. "I like that."

Sofia smiled. "Me too."

Another pause. Then— he reached for her hand. This time— there was no hesitation. No uncertainty. Just warmth.

Sofia intertwined her fingers with his. Natural. Easy. And for once— it didn't feel like something fragile. It felt like something they understood how to take care of.

They started walking again. Together. Not because they needed to fix anything. But because they wanted to keep going. Side by side.

And this time— they weren't afraid of what was behind them. Or what was ahead. Because they had already faced the hardest part— and chose each other anyway.
