Chapter 8 - When Control Begins to Break

The air changed before anything appeared.

It always did.

But this time…

It was different.

Heavier.

Sharper.

Like the world itself was holding its breath.

I felt it instantly.

That pull inside my chest twisted—tight, urgent, almost suffocating.

"They're here," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

But even as I said it…

I knew.

This wasn't the same.

Not like before.

Not like the thing in the lobby.

Not like the one he destroyed.

This felt worse.

Much worse.

His presence shifted beside me.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

"They are not alone," he said.

My stomach dropped.

"Of course they're not."

I tried to laugh.

Failed.

My hands clenched at my sides as I forced myself to stay still, to breathe, to not completely fall apart.

"What do I do?" I asked.

"Stay close."

"That's your answer for everything," I said again, though there was no bite left in my voice this time.

"It is the only answer that ensures your survival."

I didn't argue.

Not this time.

Because deep down—

I knew he was right.

The lights flickered once.

Then twice.

And then—

They exploded.

Glass shattered above us as darkness swallowed the room completely.

I flinched, instinctively moving closer to him.

The moment I did—

That connection surged.

Strong.

Steady.

Like something locking into place.

"Stay behind me," he said.

But his voice…

It wasn't calm anymore.

There was something else in it now.

Something dangerous.

Something I hadn't heard before.

"Wait," I said, my breath uneven. "What's wrong?"

Silence.

Then—

"They are stronger than I anticipated."

That was not what I wanted to hear.

My heart slammed harder.

"How strong?"

He didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

The darkness shifted.

Then—

It split.

Like something was tearing through it.

And what stepped out…

Was not one.

Not two.

Three.

Three figures.

Tall.

Distorted.

Their forms flickered unnaturally, shadows stretching and twisting around them like they were alive.

But unlike the others—

These felt aware.

Focused.

Hungry.

My breath caught.

"Oh… that's new."

"They have adapted," he said quietly.

"Adapted to what?!"

"To you."

Of course.

Everything was about me now.

Lucky me.

One of the creatures stepped forward.

Its head tilted slightly, as if studying me.

Then—

It spoke.

"You are… still here."

Its voice was layered.

Like multiple voices speaking at once.

It made my skin crawl.

"Yeah," I muttered weakly. "Not by choice."

Another one moved.

Closer.

"You disrupt… the balance."

"I'm starting to hate that word," I whispered.

His presence shifted again.

Stronger.

Darker.

The air around him seemed to bend slightly.

"You will not touch her," he said.

The words weren't loud.

But they carried weight.

Authority.

Power.

The creatures reacted instantly.

Their forms flickered violently, as if resisting something.

"You cannot protect what does not belong," one of them hissed.

Something in his expression changed.

For the first time—

I saw it clearly.

Anger.

Cold.

Controlled.

But there.

"She exists," he said. "That is enough."

The creatures moved.

Fast.

All at once.

I didn't even have time to react.

One of them lunged straight toward me—

But before it could reach me—

He was there.

Blocking it.

Intercepting it.

The impact sent a shockwave through the entire room, walls cracking slightly as the force exploded outward.

I stumbled back, my ears ringing.

This was different.

This wasn't controlled.

This was violent.

Real.

Two more came at him from different angles.

He moved—

But this time—

He didn't dodge.

He met them.

Head-on.

Dark energy burst around him, the air twisting unnaturally as he struck one of them, sending it crashing into the wall.

The second tried to grab him—

But he caught it.

Crushed it.

Its form distorted violently before shattering into fragments of shadow.

I stared, my breath caught in my throat.

"How is he even—"

The third one reached me.

Cold fingers brushed against my arm.

Pain exploded through my body.

I gasped, collapsing to my knees as the connection inside me twisted violently.

"No—!"

The creature leaned closer.

"You are weakening…"

My vision blurred.

My chest burned.

The connection—

It was pulling.

Straining.

Breaking—

And then—

He snapped.

The air exploded.

Literally.

A violent force burst outward from him, slamming into everything, sending the remaining creature flying across the room.

The pressure in the air became unbearable.

My body froze.

Not from fear.

From something else.

Something deeper.

Power.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

"Do not touch her."

His voice wasn't calm anymore.

It wasn't controlled.

It was something else entirely.

Something ancient.

Something terrifying.

The creature tried to rise—

But it couldn't.

The air itself seemed to press it down.

Crushing it.

"You do not understand…" it hissed.

"No," he said.

"You do not."

And then—

He moved.

Faster than before.

More violent.

More… something.

His hand drove straight into the creature, not just striking it—

But erasing it.

The shadow didn't shatter this time.

It disappeared.

Completely.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Thick.

Unnatural.

The pressure in the room lingered.

Then slowly—

It faded.

I collapsed fully onto the floor, my body trembling, my breathing uneven.

"What… was that?" I whispered.

No answer.

I looked up.

And froze.

He was still standing there.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The air around him hadn't fully returned to normal.

It still twisted slightly, like reality itself didn't know how to handle his presence.

His eyes—

They weren't the same.

Darker.

Colder.

More distant.

My heart skipped.

"Hey…" I said softly.

No response.

He didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't breathe.

"Hey!" I pushed myself up slightly. "It's over!"

Nothing.

A cold realization settled in my chest.

"He lost control…"

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

And suddenly—

That connection between us surged.

Violently.

Pulling.

Demanding.

My breath caught as something inside me reacted instinctively.

Without thinking—

I moved.

Closer.

Each step felt heavier, like I was walking into something dangerous.

But I couldn't stop.

The closer I got—

The stronger the connection became.

Until finally—

I reached him.

I hesitated for a split second.

Then—

I grabbed his arm.

The moment I touched him—

Everything exploded.

Not outward.

Inward.

A surge of energy rushed through me, overwhelming, suffocating, consuming.

I gasped, my body locking up as something inside him responded—

To me.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

The pressure in the room began to fade.

His body relaxed slightly.

The darkness in his eyes shifted.

And then—

He blinked.

Once.

Twice.

His gaze focused.

On me.

For a moment—

Neither of us moved.

Neither of us spoke.

"You…" he said quietly.

My breath was still uneven.

"Yeah," I whispered. "Me."

Silence.

Then—

His expression changed.

Not fully.

But enough.

"You should not have done that."

I frowned slightly.

"Done what? Saved you?"

His gaze darkened slightly.

"You interfered with something you do not understand."

I let out a weak laugh.

"Join the club."

Silence again.

But this time—

It felt different.

Closer.

More intense.

More dangerous.

Because now—

It wasn't just him protecting me.

It wasn't just me depending on him.

It was something else.

Something deeper.

Something that connected us in a way neither of us fully understood anymore.

And somehow…

That might be more dangerous than anything trying to kill me.

Because for the first time—

He wasn't the only one who could lose control.

And I wasn't sure what would happen…

If I did too.
