The restaurant existed in the specific register of places that didn't need to advertise.
No sign outside — just a number etched into black stone beside a door that a person either knew to open or didn't. She knew now.

"Does he know that you know that?"
"Yes."
"Good." She scrolled through the background notes she'd pulled that afternoon — Holt, the other two board members, their wives, their professional histories, the specific intersection points where the four of them had overlapped with Damien over the years. "He'll test me."
"He'll try to remove you," Damien said. "There's a difference."
She looked up. "You knew about this before tonight."
He looked out the window. The Upper East Side slid past — the limestone facades of 73rd Street catching the streetlights, yellow cabs threading the crosstown traffic, a woman walking a dog the size of a small horse on a very thin leash outside the Carlyle. "I knew about it before I hired you."
"And you hired me anyway."

She processed this. "You needed someone with nothing to lose."

The car stopped.
She looked at the unmarked door, the black stone, the faint warm light pressing through the gap at the threshold.
"What does he want?" she said. "Ultimately. What does Holt actually want?"
Damien was quiet for a moment in the way that meant he was deciding how much to give her.

She picked up her clutch. "Has he found it?"

She felt the table's air pressure change — subtle, the way it did when something sharp entered a room wearing soft clothes. Across the table Margaret Holt's eyes moved to her husband with an expression that was too controlled to be anything other than deliberate.

"Legal revised it."

She said nothing.
"I've been on this board for seven years," Holt said. "Four communications directors. None of them understood that the difference between a liability clause and a narrative was the difference between a lawsuit and a legacy." He looked at her. "You understood it in three weeks."
She kept her face even. "I read things carefully."
"You do." He ate. She ate. The candle between them held its ground. "I still think you're a risk," he said conversationally. "Your background, your history with the company — these are not small concerns."
"I know," she said.
"But I've been wrong before." He said it the way people said true things they'd had to practice saying. "About people." A pause. "Not often."
She looked at him steadily. "How will you know this time?"
He almost smiled. It was brief and entirely genuine and it changed his face the way genuine things always did — unexpectedly, in the direction of something human.
"I won't," he said. "Not tonight." He reached for his wine glass. "Ask me in six months."
She felt Damien watching her from across the table.
Not obviously — he was still in conversation with Whitfield, present and engaged, nothing in his posture suggesting divided attention. But she had spent enough hours being looked at by those grey eyes to know the quality of them on the side of her face. The particular warmth of being watched by someone who was watching carefully.
She didn't turn.
She talked to Arthur Brennan instead — who had been quiet through most of dinner and turned out, when drawn out, to be the most interesting person at the table. He needed a board member with enough credibility to make the institutional investors stop laughing." He looked at his wine glass. "I told him I'd give him thirty minutes."
"How long did the meeting run?" Sera asked.
"Three hours," Brennan said. "I've never told him that was unusual." He looked at her with the eyes of a man who had been watching people for seventy years and had gotten very good at it. "He told me once that he built the company so no one could touch him again." A pause. "He's never told me what again referred to."
Sera looked at her plate.
She thought about Trumbull County. The sealed file. The chain-link fence and two boys standing in front of it with the older one's arm around the younger one.
"I think," she said carefully, "that some things get built around wounds we don't have language for yet."
Brennan looked at her for a long moment.
"Yes," he said. "I think you're right."
The car home was quiet.
Not the hostile quiet of their early weeks or the careful professional quiet of their first days. Something else — the specific quality of silence that comes after a long evening in a room that required performance, when the performance can finally come off.

"Brennan talked to you," he said.
"Yes."
"What did he say?"

"He said you were the most prepared twenty-six-year-old he'd ever met," she said.
It was true. It was not the whole truth. He knew it wasn't the whole truth — she could see that in the slight stillness of him, the quality of his silence.
He looked at her for one long moment.
Then he looked back out the window.
"Brennan," he said quietly, "has always given me more credit than I deserved."
The car moved through the city. The heater pushed warm air against her ankles. Somewhere outside, the wind off the East River was doing what it always did in late November — cutting through every gap it could find, the kind of cold that made the whole city pull its coat tighter.
She looked at the side of his face.

The car pulled up to the Aldrich Tower.
He got out first and held the door — a thing he hadn't done before, small and unremarked — and she stepped out into the cold and the two of them walked through the private entrance into the quiet elevator and rose forty-three floors without speaking.
The doors opened.
She stepped into the penthouse foyer.
She was halfway to the east corridor when he said her name.

Sera.
She turned.
He was still by the elevator, jacket open, one hand in his pocket, the penthouse quiet and dim around him. He looked at her with an expression that had no professional category — the one she'd been seeing fragments of for weeks, appearing and disappearing too fast to hold.

"You did well," he said. "Tonight."
She looked at him for a moment.
"I know," she said.

"Goodnight," he said.

She went to her room.
She sat on the edge of the bed in her black dress and looked at the wall and listened to the city forty-nine floors below doing its endless, indifferent work.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
She picked it up.
A text from a number she didn't recognize — no name, no area code she knew, the kind of number that belonged to a burner or a forwarding service or someone who needed to reach her without being traceable.
Four words.
We need to talk.
And below it, before she could process the number or the words or the cold that had nothing to do with November moving up the back of her neck:
A photograph.
Her father. Marcus Calloway. Standing outside St. Raphael's Hospital.
Taken today. This afternoon. While she had been sitting in a library reading sealed court records and drinking coffee in the rain.
Someone had been watching her father.
