Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – Evaluation

The classroom didn't hold attention that day.

It couldn't.

The tension had been building since morning, subtle at first, then obvious enough that even those who tried to ignore it couldn't anymore. Students whispered between lessons. Instructors exchanged looks that lasted just a second too long.

Something was coming.

Kael sat near the window as usual, posture relaxed, gaze drifting just enough to give the impression of disinterest.

He was listening.

Always.

"…they're doing it today."

"…combat evaluation?"

"…for everyone. Not just the chosen."

"…that makes no sense—"

It made perfect sense.

Kael didn't react outwardly, but his thoughts aligned quickly.

Assessment after instability. Control through exposure.

The academy wasn't just testing strength.

It was measuring response.

The door opened.

The instructor stepped in, expression neutral, voice steady.

"Class dismissed early. Report to the lower arena."

No explanation.

No room for questions.

Chairs shifted. Conversations rose immediately. Some excited. Some nervous.

Most… uncertain.

Kael stood.

Moved with the others.

The lower arena sat beneath the main academy structure, a wide, enclosed space designed for controlled combat. Reinforced flooring. Layered barriers. Elevated seating where instructors and observers could monitor everything.

It wasn't meant for play.

Students filled the space gradually, forming loose groups. The chosen stood apart again, not by instruction, but by instinct. Confidence sat on them more naturally now.

Or at least—

they pretended it did.

Kael's gaze moved across the arena.

Entrances.

Exit points.

Blind spots.

Then—

He saw her.

Liora stood near the edge of the designated combat area, shifting her weight slightly as she watched the others. Her posture was better than before—less withdrawn—but there was still uncertainty in the way her hands moved, like she didn't trust them fully.

Energy flickered faintly around her fingers.

Unstable.

Uncontrolled.

Kael noticed immediately.

So she has it too.

That explained more than it complicated.

"Pairs will be assigned," the instructor's voice echoed across the arena. "This is not optional. You will engage until instructed to stop."

A pause.

"Control will be evaluated."

That word mattered more than anything else.

Students began stepping forward one by one, names being called, pairs forming.

Some fights were clean.

Some were messy.

Some ended quickly.

Then—

Liora's name was called.

She stiffened slightly.

But stepped forward anyway.

Her opponent followed.

One of the chosen.

Tall. Confident. Relaxed in a way that didn't come from calm—but from certainty that nothing here could threaten him.

He rolled his shoulders once, stepping into position across from her.

A faint smirk touched his expression.

"…you sure about this?" he said lightly.

Liora frowned slightly.

"…I don't think I get to say no."

A few students nearby laughed quietly.

The chosen exhaled through his nose.

"Try not to hurt yourself then."

The signal was given.

The match began.

Liora hesitated.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

The chosen moved instantly.

Fast.

But not overwhelming.

Controlled.

Measured.

He closed the distance, stopping just short of her space instead of striking immediately.

Testing.

Liora reacted late, stepping back too quickly, her footing uneven.

The energy around her hands flared—

Then collapsed.

Unstable.

The chosen tilted his head slightly.

"…that's it?"

He moved again.

This time—

he struck.

Not full force.

Not serious.

Just enough to push her.

Liora tried to respond, her hand lifting, energy forming again—but it flickered, unstable, spilling outward instead of focusing.

He slipped past it easily.

A light strike to her side.

She stumbled.

Didn't fall.

But barely held.

Kael watched.

Not with emotion.

With clarity.

He's playing with her.

Not finishing.

Not overwhelming.

Dragging it out.

Testing her reactions.

Enjoying the control.

Liora steadied herself, breathing uneven now.

Her hands trembled slightly as energy tried to form again, brighter this time—but still wild, unshaped.

"Focus," the chosen said casually, stepping around her. "Or you're just wasting everyone's time."

She clenched her jaw.

Tried again.

The energy flared—

Then burst outward.

Uncontrolled.

The chosen stepped back easily, avoiding it without effort.

"…yeah, that's not working," he said.

He moved in again—

faster this time.

Liora didn't react in time.

The strike landed.

She dropped to one knee.

The arena quieted slightly.

Not concern.

Observation.

Kael's gaze sharpened.

Something shifted.

Not outside.

Inside.

The system reacted.

[Live Evaluation Triggered]

Kael didn't move.

[Target Analysis Available]

His eyes locked onto the chosen.

Information didn't appear visually.

It formed.

Structured.

Instant.

Movement patterns.

Timing intervals.

Strike preferences.

Strength.

Weakness.

Not given.

Understood.

Kael's breathing slowed.

So this is what you do.

Not instructions.

Assistance.

A tool.

Liora tried to stand.

The chosen didn't let her.

He stepped forward again—

hand reaching—

not to strike—

but to control.

That was enough.

Kael moved.

No announcement.

No hesitation.

He stepped into the arena.

The chosen paused mid-motion.

"…you lost?" he said, glancing down at Liora.

Then noticed Kael.

"…who are you supposed to be?"

Kael didn't answer.

His gaze stayed fixed.

The system aligned.

Everything slowed.

Not physically.

Perceptually.

The chosen shifted his stance slightly.

Weight distribution uneven on the back foot.

Right shoulder leading.

Aggressive entry. Linear follow-up.

Kael stepped forward.

The chosen reacted immediately.

Fast.

Confident.

His strike came sharp—

Kael moved earlier.

The attack missed.

Clean.

A murmur spread through the arena.

The chosen's expression shifted slightly.

Kael didn't pause.

He stepped in.

Strike.

A clean punch to the torso.

Not overwhelming.

But precise.

The chosen staggered half a step.

Surprise.

Real.

Now it was a fight.
