Chapter 87 - The Gaze Once Again

Staring at Tony Stark, Pepper Potts asked with a serious expression, "What roadblock? What are you talking about?"

Tony looked down at the Arc Reactor in his hand and said, "Nothing, just a tiny bit of trouble."

As he began to detach the reactor from his chest, he explained, "A wire has come loose at the base of this device. It's making contact with the socket housing and causing a short."

With a sudden movement, Tony yanked the old reactor out of his chest, let out a sharp hiss, and grunted, "Agh—good."

He then placed the outdated device into Pepper's trembling hands.

Seeing the open cavity in his chest, Pepper became somewhat incoherent. "You... you... what do you want me to do?"

Tony waved a hand dismissively. "Put that on the table over there. It's useless now."

Pepper turned and set the old reactor down, exclaiming under her breath, "Oh, God."

Tony looked back at the new reactor in his hand and said, "I need you to reach in there and gently pull the wire out."

Pepper turned back, her face full of doubt. "Is this safe?"

Tony closed his eyes and replied, "It should be fine. It's a bit like... a military operation."

"As long as you don't trip the mine, it won't go off."

Pepper looked at him blankly. "What military operation? What do you mean?"

"A computer game, don't worry about it," Tony answered. "Just pull the wire out gently, okay?"

Seeing his insistence, Pepper gave in. "Fine."

She looked at the hollow in Tony's chest and reached out, only to immediately recoil. "I... I don't think I'm qualified to do this."

Tony looked her in the eye. "No, no, no. You are qualified."

"You are the most capable, reliable, and qualified person I know."

"You're going to do a great job."

When Pepper still didn't move, Tony prodded her again. "How much longer are you going to draw this out?"

"I'm really—fine, fine!" Pepper replied.

Tony looked at her earnestly. "I really need your help."

Pepper took a deep breath and reached her hand into the device in Tony's chest.

As her fingers made contact with the interior, she cried out, "God, there's pus in here!"

"That's not pus," Tony explained. "It's just inorganic plasmatic discharge from the device. It's not pus."

"It smells terrible!" Pepper shrieked.

Tony nodded. "It does. Have you felt the copper wire yet?"

"Alright, I've got it. I've got it," Pepper answered.

"Good. Whatever you do, don't touch the housing on the way out."

Despite Tony's warning, Pepper's hand brushed the housing once, but after a bit of fumbling, she managed to pull the copper wire and the magnet out together.

She then installed the new Arc Reactor for Tony, a process that made him shout in pain twice.

Pepper held up her hands, dripping with the plasmatic solution. "Never, never, never ask me to do that again."

Tony looked at her, his voice softening. "But... I have no one else but you."

The two shared a long look. Tony twitched his mouth, made a slight face, and then broke the tension. "Anyway, thank you. And thank you for finding Hayate Shiranui to come rescue me."

"Even though I'm sure I could have escaped on my own, I appreciate it."

Pepper turned away, muttering "Unbelievable," and picked up the old reactor. "What do I do with this?"

Tony began putting on a fresh shirt, acting as if he didn't care. "Destroy it."

Pepper looked at the device with curiosity. "You don't want to keep it?"

Tony turned back. "Pepper, I have many flaws. One of them is that I'm always looking for the next best thing."

Hearing this, Pepper looked a bit dejected. "Is that all, Mr. Stark?"

"That's all, Ms. Potts."

Tony then turned to his robotic arm. "Dummy, what is all this junk? Keep my phone and the photo of my dad, but throw everything else into the trash. All of it."

Pepper left the lab, taking the old reactor with her.

The Triskelion.

Nick Fury's Office.

Phil Coulson was delivering a report. "Director, I'm still following up on Tony. I believe we'll find a breakthrough through Pepper Potts."

"Also, here is the latest file on Hayate Shiranui. It differs significantly from your previous analysis. You should take a look."

Nick Fury took the file and began reading it carefully.

When he saw that Hayate Shiranui had become an Elder of the High Table, Nick's eyebrow arched. He clearly hadn't expected this hitman to rise so quickly.

While the High Table was still just a conglomerate of criminal organizations, arresting an Elder would be far more complicated than catching a rogue assassin. He didn't fear the High Table, but the political weight of the situation had shifted.

Nick flipped to the second page. When he saw that Hayate had gone to war with the Hand and sent his men to kill Madam Gao, his surprise deepened. He now understood why Coulson said the analysis was "different."

After finishing the file, Nick Fury closed the folder. "Find a time to contact Hayate Shiranui again. Since he was the one who pulled Tony Stark out, he must have a better understanding of what happened over there."

"Pepper Potts was certainly generous—one hundred million dollars. That kid made an easy fortune. I hope he's paying his taxes..."

"Understood, Director," Coulson replied. "I'll go see him today to get his account of the rescue."

Nick Fury paused for a moment before speaking again. "Select someone reliable to get close to Hayate Shiranui. Since he isn't a ninja from the Hand, I want you to dig deep into his background."

Fury pointed to a photo showing the Hidden Leaf forehead protector on Rock Lee's waist.

"That symbol... it must be linked to the organization behind him. I need to know who they are."

Coulson thought it over for a moment. "Director, Shiranui's agency isn't currently hiring, and he is now surrounded by High Table Adjudicators. Getting close to him will be difficult."
