Lucian moved to his wardrobe with deliberate purpose, selecting fresh attire befitting his station. As he adjusted the collar before the mirror, his mind was already working through the problem ahead.
"The city's destruction," he murmured to himself, his reflection showing sharp, calculating eyes. "Monster invasion orchestrated by a jealous noble. But the game never explained the specifics. Sitting here theorizing accomplishes nothing. I need intelligence, which means I need to see the city's defenses firsthand."
He moved toward the door with confident strides, pulling it open to find Nara standing just outside.
"Master Lucian," she said, her tone professionally neutral. "Where are you headed?"
Lucian met her gaze steadily. "Into the city. I want to inspect the outer districts and walls."
Nara's eyes narrowed slightly, clearly surprised by this departure from his usual behavior. After a moment's consideration, she nodded. "Very well. I'll arrange an escort. Two knights should suffice."
"Thank you, Nara." Lucian's tone carried genuine appreciation without excessive warmth.
Something flickered in Nara's expression at his natural courtesy, but she simply turned. "Follow me, Master."
They walked through the castle's grand corridors in comfortable silence, Nara's measured steps leading them toward the main gate. Lucian observed everything with new eyes, cataloging details about the castle's layout, its security, its vulnerabilities.
The morning sun cast long shadows across the courtyard as they approached the castle gate. Four knights stood at attention, their armor polished to a gleaming finish. Nara addressed them with crisp authority.
"Good morning. Prince Lucian requires an escort into the city. Two of you will accompany us."
The knights turned, and the moment they registered Lucian's presence, all four dropped to their knees with audible gasps, their voices tight with fear. "Forgive us for not recognizing you immediately. We deserve punishment for this failure."
Lucian stopped before them, his posture straight, his expression unreadable. He let the silence stretch for precisely three seconds — long enough to command their full attention but not so long as to be cruel.
"Rise," he said, his voice carrying natural authority without harshness. "You've committed no offense. Your vigilance should be directed outward, toward potential threats, not inward at every passing noble."
The knights remained frozen, clearly struggling to reconcile his words with the reputation that preceded him. Lucian could see the disbelief written across their faces.
"That's an order," he added, his tone firm but not unkind.
Slowly, mechanically, the knights rose to their feet, their eyes still averted in lingering fear.
Nara stepped forward, pointing to two knights. "You two will escort the prince. Prepare yourselves."
"Yes, ma'am!" They snapped to attention, though their movements remained stiff with residual tension.
Lucian turned to Nara. "Shall we proceed?"
"Yes, Master." Nara resumed her position at the lead, and they set off toward the city proper.
---
The path from castle to city revealed a world Lucian had only experienced through a screen. Merchants called out their wares, children darted between stalls, the scent of fresh bread mingled with morning dew on cobblestones. Life, vibrant and unaware of the doom approaching.
Lucian's eyes moved methodically across the scene, cataloging everything. Defense weak points. Escape routes. Choke points where monsters could be funneled. His expression remained calm, but his mind worked with military precision.
"The city seems peaceful, doesn't it?" Nara's voice drew his attention. She had slowed slightly, walking closer to him now.
"It does," Lucian agreed, his tone measured. "I'd like to keep it that way."
Nara's sharp eyes studied his profile. "You're planning something."
It wasn't a question. Lucian allowed himself a slight smile. "I'm considering various scenarios. A responsible ruler should always think ahead."
"You've never cared about responsibility before," Nara said bluntly.
"People change," Lucian replied simply. "Or perhaps I'm finally taking my position seriously. Does the reason matter if the result is beneficial?"
Nara fell silent, clearly processing this new version of the prince she thought she knew. Before she could respond, one of the knights spoke up.
"We're approaching the city gates, my lord."
Lucian nodded acknowledgment, his attention shifting forward. The massive iron gates loomed ahead, guards snapping to attention as they approached.
"Good morning, Lady Nara. Prince Lucian." The gate guard greeted, his salute crisp despite the tension in his shoulders.
"We're proceeding into the city. Open the gates."
"Yes, ma'am." The guard signaled, and the gates began their ponderous swing open.
Lucian stepped forward as the gap widened, revealing the sprawling city beyond. His responsibility. And if he had anything to say about it, his to protect.
Elara's face flashed through his mind, her tear-stained smile when he'd promised to keep her safe.
"Let's see what we're working with," Lucian murmured, stepping through the gate with the confidence of someone who had every right to command these streets.
Because now, he did.
