As Drum Island became the center of conflict among various forces, the mysterious screen—once showing simple "slides"—changed again. This time, it began to narrate to the entire world the tragic early life of Tony Tony Chopper…
[Tony Tony Chopper]
According to the historical work Nico Chronicle, he is one of the most thoroughly documented figures of the Great Pirate Era—an individual impossible to ignore. His life story is widely recognized by later historians as highly credible.
[About the Nico Chronicle]
This chronicle was compiled by the descendants of Nico Robin. It records major events of the pirate era, along with biographies of dozens of key figures. Previously, it covered a portion of Buggy's story—now, it turns to Chopper.
The historian did not shy away from mentioning Robin's past—how she was labeled the "Devil's Child" by the World Government. As an archaeologist and witness to history, her legacy endured.
The chronicle even details how the World Government—which ruled for over 800 years—gradually declined and ultimately vanished into the dust of history.
And today—
Chopper's origins would finally be revealed.
A Rejected Birth
Chopper was born somewhere among a herd of wild reindeer on Drum Island.
But from the moment he was born, he was different.
He had a blue nose.
To the herd, he was an outcast—an anomaly. As a child, he was driven away by the herd leader, left alone and abandoned in the harsh, snow-covered wilderness.
With no one to rely on, the young reindeer struggled to survive through sheer willpower.
He dug through snow with his tiny hooves, searching for scraps of food.
One day, by chance—or perhaps fate—he found a strange fruit growing on a small tree.
Driven by hunger, he devoured it.
It tasted awful.
But it filled his stomach—and allowed him to survive that brutal winter.
The "Worthless" Fruit
Later, it was discovered that what he ate was a Devil Fruit—
The Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit, standard model).
It was widely considered one of the most useless Devil Fruits:
Humans who ate it gained almost nothing
Animals who ate it only gained human intelligence and speech
No flashy powers. No combat advantage.
Just awareness.
In fact, a later human who ate the same fruit gained only slightly higher intelligence—while losing the ability to swim, becoming a laughingstock.
Yet ironically—
This "useless" fruit would go on to produce many legendary figures across history.
Not the fruit that made Chopper great—
But Chopper who gave meaning to the fruit.
Rejected by All
After eating the fruit, Chopper could no longer control his transformations well.
In his human form, he became a towering, fur-covered monster with antlers.
When he tried to return to the herd—
He was attacked again.
To the reindeer, he was no longer one of them.
But when he approached humans, hoping to be accepted—
They pointed guns at him.
Humans feared him even more.
Bullets tore into his body as he fled into the snowy forest.
Thus, a terrifying legend was born on Drum Island:
The Blue-Nosed Snow Monster.
A nightmare used to scare disobedient children.
Despair
Though he survived, Chopper was left gravely wounded.
Alone in the snow, he lost all reason to live.
Rejected by both reindeer and humans—
He had nowhere to belong.
Dying in the snow almost felt like release.
The Man Who Changed Everything
If not for one man—
The world would have lost a future great doctor.
That man was Dr. Hiriluk.
A "quack doctor" with little success in curing patients.
Yet fate brought him to Chopper.
He found the half-human, half-reindeer collapsed in the snow, bleeding heavily.
When he tried to treat him—
Chopper attacked.
Mistaking the syringe for a weapon, and fueled by hatred toward humans, he beat Hiriluk badly.
Yet even then—
Hiriluk still chose to save him.
To earn Chopper's trust, he even stripped naked in the freezing snow, showing he carried no weapons.
Chopper couldn't understand why.
But eventually, he stopped resisting.
A New Life
Under Hiriluk's care, Chopper's wounds healed quickly thanks to the resilience granted by his Devil Fruit.
For the first time in his life—
He experienced warmth.
Hot food.
Kindness.
Care.
He cried.
For the first time, he opened his heart to a human.
Hiriluk became his adoptive father.
The Name "Tony Tony Chopper"
Though Chopper could walk upright and speak, he had no name.
So Hiriluk gave him one.
Because of his antlers—capable of chopping down trees—
He named him:
Tony Tony Chopper.
A name that would one day be written into history.
Born not from greatness—
But from the mouth of a "quack doctor" in the snow.
