Chapter 11 (500+ w
The silence between them wasn't calm anymore.
It was sharp. Heavy. Almost suffocating.
Ava stood still, her eyes locked on Rayan like she was trying to read something hidden deep inside him.
"Say it," she whispered.
Rayan frowned slightly. "Say what?"
Her voice didn't rise, but it carried weight.
"Say that none of this is real. That what happened… what's happening right now… it's just survival."
Rayan looked away for a moment, jaw tightening.
"Ava—"
"No," she cut in quickly. "Don't say my name like that."
"Like what?" he asked quietly.
"Like it means something."
That made him pause.
For a second, just a second—his expression shifted.
"It does," he said.
Ava let out a soft, almost broken laugh. "You don't get to decide that."
"I'm not deciding anything."
"Then what are you doing?" she stepped closer, her voice shaking now. "Because from where I'm standing, it feels like you're pulling me in… and pushing me away at the same time."
Rayan didn't respond immediately.
He just looked at her.
Really looked.
And that somehow made everything worse.
"You should leave," he finally said.
Ava blinked. "Again with that?"
"I mean it this time."
"You always say that," she snapped. "And yet here I am. Still here. Still in danger. Still—" she stopped herself.
"Still what?" Rayan asked.
She shook her head. "Nothing."
"Ava."
"Don't."
Silence fell again.
"You think I don't see it?" Ava said suddenly, her voice lower now. "The way you look at me. The way you don't let go. The way you keep coming back."
Rayan's expression hardened. "You're reading too much into it."
"No," she said firmly. "You're hiding too much from it."
That hit.
Harder than anything else she had said.
Rayan stepped closer, his voice dropping.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
"Then explain it to me," Ava shot back. "Because right now, it feels like I'm standing in the middle of something I don't understand… with someone I can't trust."
That word—trust—hung between them.
Dangerous.
Fragile.
"I told you not to trust me," Rayan said quietly.
"And I didn't listen," Ava replied.
"Exactly."
"But that doesn't make this fake."
Rayan looked at her, something conflicted flickering in his eyes.
"You think this is about feelings?" he asked.
"I think this is about truth," she said.
"And the truth is," he stepped even closer now, his voice almost a whisper, "being with me will ruin you."
Ava didn't step back.
"Maybe I'm already ruined."
That… broke something.
Inside him.
Rayan turned away abruptly, running a hand through his hair.
"You don't understand what kind of people are after me."
"Then make me understand!"
His voice rose slightly this time.
"No! Because the moment you understand… you won't survive it."
Ava went quiet.
Her heartbeat loud in her ears.
"So that's it?" she asked softly. "You just decide what I can handle?"
"I'm trying to keep you alive!"
"And I'm trying to understand why I care!" she shouted.
That stopped him.
Completely.
The words echoed between them.
Raw.
Unfiltered.
Real.
Ava's voice dropped again.
"I shouldn't care," she said. "You're dangerous. You lie. You push me away every chance you get."
Rayan didn't move.
"But I do," she finished.
Silence.
Rayan slowly turned back to her.
His eyes softer now.
But still guarded.
Always guarded.
"You shouldn't," he said quietly.
Ava nodded.
"I know."
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then she asked the one question neither of them was ready for—
"If I walk away right now… will you let me?"
Rayan didn't answer.
Because they both already knew the truth.
He wouldn't.
