Chapter 98q
The palace did not sleep that night. It was not because of chaos or danger, but because of anticipation that had settled into every corridor, every chamber, every guarded corner. Even the air felt different, as if the palace itself was aware that something important was about to happen. Tomorrow was the wedding, and nothing about it felt ordinary anymore.
Zack walked alone through the upper corridor, his steps steady and quiet against the polished floor. He was not avoiding anyone, nor was he searching for anything. He simply needed space where his thoughts could exist without interruption. His expression remained controlled as always, but inside, his mind was not as orderly as his posture suggested.
He kept returning to the same thing, Alvira's reaction to him changing. Not the mission, not the security arrangements, not even Ray's warning. It was the way she had looked at him, as if she could see through the adjustment he had tried to call control. That part lingered more than anything else.
He stopped at the open balcony corridor where the night air moved gently through the arches. The palace grounds below were lit by soft lanterns and steady patrol movements. Everything was in place. Everything was secure. Everything was as it should be. And yet, something still felt unsettled.
Not outside.
Inside.
Footsteps approached behind him, slow and deliberate. Zack did not turn immediately because he already knew who it was.
Ray.
Ray stopped a short distance away, not invading his space, not standing too far either. Just enough distance for conversation without pressure.
Ray said, "You are still awake."
Zack said, "So are you."
Ray said, "I am on duty."
Zack said, "You always are."
A pause followed, quiet and measured.
Ray stepped closer to the railing but still kept his gaze forward.
Ray said, "Tomorrow changes the structure."
Zack said, "The structure is already set."
Ray said, "No. Tomorrow finalizes it."
That distinction mattered.
Zack understood it immediately.
Ray continued, "Once the ceremony happens, everything shifts. Attention, security demands, reactions from outside."
Zack said, "I am aware."
Ray said, "Good."
Another pause settled between them.
Then Ray said, "And you."
Zack turned his head slightly.
Zack said, "What about me."
Ray finally looked at him properly.
Ray said, "You are not as detached as you used to be."
Zack did not respond immediately. There was no point denying something that was already visible.
Ray added, "It is not a problem yet."
Zack said, "Then why mention it."
Ray said, "Because it becomes one when you stop acknowledging it."
Silence stretched again, heavier this time.
Zack looked away toward the courtyard.
Zack said, "I am still in control."
Ray said, "I believe you."
That was not reassurance. It was assessment.
Ray continued quietly, "But control and stability are not the same thing."
Zack's jaw tightened slightly, but he did not respond immediately.
Zack said, "You are overanalyzing."
Ray said, "No."
A pause.
Ray said, "I am observing."
That word lingered longer than the rest.
Zack exhaled slowly and looked out over the palace again.
Zack said, "It is a wedding, not a battlefield."
Ray did not answer immediately.
Then Ray said, "Everything important becomes something else when it is at risk."
Neither of them needed to explain what that meant.
—
Down in the lower corridor, Alvira stood near a quieter section of the palace, away from the movement of preparation. She was not hiding, but she had naturally drifted away from the noise. Her thoughts were louder than anything around her.
Zack's behavior.
Zack's adjustment.
Zack's intention.
It was all connected, but not in a way she fully understood yet.
Lisa approached quietly and stopped beside her.
Lisa said, "You are avoiding the main hall."
Alvira said, "I am not."
Lisa glanced toward her.
Lisa said, "You are thinking too much."
Alvira said, "Everyone is."
Lisa said, "Not like you."
That made Alvira pause.
Lisa continued, "He is changing how he behaves."
Alvira said, "I noticed."
Lisa said, "And it is bothering you."
Alvira hesitated.
Alvira said, "It feels different."
Lisa said, "Because it is different."
Alvira said, "Not like this. Not suddenly."
Lisa said, "It is not sudden. You just did not notice when it started."
That made Alvira go quiet. Because it was true. It had not started today. It had been building quietly, slowly, in ways she had not fully recognized until now.
Lisa added gently, "You are trying to understand why it bothers you."
Alvira said, "I am not bothered."
Lisa said, "You are careful."
Alvira said, "There is a difference."
Lisa said, "Not when it is someone you are starting to pay attention to."
Silence followed again.
Longer this time.
Not uncomfortable.
Just real.
—
Above them, Zack remained at the balcony while Ray stood beside him. Neither of them spoke immediately after that last exchange.
Ray finally said, "She is affecting your decisions more than you admit."
Zack said, "That is not true."
Ray said, "I am not judging it."
Zack said, "It sounds like you are."
Ray said, "It is observation."
A pause.
Ray said, "You are adjusting your behavior around her."
Zack said, "I am adapting."
Ray said, "To what."
Zack did not answer immediately.
Because the answer was not tactical.
It was something else.
Finally, Zack said, "To avoid unnecessary distance."
Ray looked at him.
Fully now.
Ray said, "That is not strategic."
Zack said, "It is still valid."
Ray said, "It is emotional."
Zack said, "It is practical."
Ray did not respond for a moment.
Then Ray said quietly, "That is what worries me."
Silence followed again, but it was no longer tense. It was simply honest.
—
Below, Alvira and Lisa began walking back toward the main hall. The preparations continued around them, but their conversation had shifted inward.
Alvira said quietly, "Tomorrow is going to change everything."
Lisa said, "It already is."
—
Above them, Zack remained still at the balcony. Ray stood beside him. The palace continued moving around them, every piece in place, every detail accounted for, every plan secured.
Everything was ready.
Everything was controlled.
Everything was supposed to go exactly as planned.
But as the night deepened and the palace settled into uneasy stillness, one truth remained beneath all of it, unspoken but undeniable.
Tomorrow would not only complete a wedding.
It would expose everything that had been quietly changing long before anyone admitted it.
