Chapter 62 - "The Truth Beneath the Surface"

CHAPTER 62

The house had grown smaller.

That was the only way Lyria could describe it.

Not in size—but in feeling.

The walls that once felt like protection now felt like they were closing in, holding too many unspoken truths, too many glances that lasted longer than they should.

And at the center of it all—

Kael.

---

He stood near the window, his back straight despite the weakness that still lingered in his body. Anyone who looked closely would notice the slight tension in his shoulders, the controlled way he breathed—but no one dared to say it.

Because even like this—

He felt dangerous.

---

Lyria stood close to him, her presence quiet but constant. Her fingers brushed his lightly, as though reminding herself he was still there, still real.

Across the room, Rina watched.

She tried not to.

She really did.

But it was impossible.

---

"You should sit," Rina said finally, her voice softer than usual.

Kael didn't turn.

"I am fine."

---

Rina took a small step forward. "You just woke up after months. You are not fine."

---

Kael's gaze shifted slightly toward her.

Cold.

Distant.

"I did not ask for your opinion."

---

The words landed harder than he intended.

Or maybe exactly as he intended.

---

Rina paused.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

---

Lyria noticed immediately.

"Kael…" she said quietly, a gentle warning in her tone.

---

He didn't respond to that.

Instead, his eyes moved past Rina—toward her parents, who had just stepped into the room.

---

The air changed instantly.

---

Rina's father closed the door behind him slowly, his gaze fixed on Kael with something that wasn't quite hostility—

But wasn't trust either.

---

"We need to speak," he said.

---

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Then speak."

---

Rina's mother stepped forward slightly, her hands folded together, though the tension in her posture betrayed her calm.

"You are not ordinary travelers," she said carefully.

---

Kael let out a faint breath.

"No."

---

A pause.

---

"And neither are you," he added.

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

---

Rina's fingers tightened at her sides.

"…You knew?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

---

Kael's gaze flicked to her briefly.

"I suspected."

---

Her breath caught slightly.

---

Her father stepped forward.

"…Then there is no point pretending anymore."

He exhaled slowly.

"We are werewolves."

---

Lyria stiffened.

The word settled differently now that it was spoken aloud.

Real.

Unhidden.

---

She looked at Kael.

He didn't look surprised.

---

Instead, his expression hardened.

"And we are leaving."

---

The room went still.

---

Lyria blinked.

"So soon?"

---

Kael turned to her slightly, his voice lowering just enough for her.

"We have stayed too long already."

---

Rina stepped forward quickly.

"No—wait," she said, her voice urgent now. "You cannot just decide that and leave."

---

Kael looked at her again.

And again—

There was nothing there.

---

"I can," he said simply.

"And I will."

---

Rina shook her head, taking another step closer.

"You do not understand what is happening outside," she insisted. "Things have changed. It is not safe—"

---

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You think I need protection?"

---

"That is not what I mean," she said quickly, her voice softening. "I mean… you are still healing. You can barely stand without—"

---

"I am standing," he cut in.

---

That silence again.

---

Rina swallowed.

Her gaze dropped for a moment before lifting again, this time softer.

More personal.

---

"You almost died," she said quietly.

---

Kael didn't respond.

---

"You were not moving," she continued. "You were not speaking… you were barely breathing. We thought—"

She stopped herself.

---

Lyria felt the shift.

This wasn't just concern anymore.

---

Kael spoke, his voice low.

"And yet I am alive."

---

Rina nodded slowly.

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Because we did not leave you."

---

That line lingered.

---

Rina's father stepped in.

"You were found in our forest," he said. "Weak. Exposed. If we had chosen differently—"

---

"But you did not," Kael interrupted.

---

Their eyes met.

---

"No," her father agreed. "We did not."

---

Kael's jaw tightened slightly.

"And for that… you have my acknowledgment."

---

Rina's brows furrowed.

"…Acknowledgment?"

---

"That is all you will get," Kael said.

---

The distance in his voice was unmistakable.

---

Rina's chest tightened.

She took a step closer without realizing.

"That is all?" she asked softly. "After everything?"

---

Kael's gaze didn't waver.

"Yes."

---

That hurt.

More than she expected.

More than she could hide.

---

Lyria shifted slightly beside him, uncomfortable now.

"Kael… they took care of us," she said gently. "For months."

---

He turned to her.

And his expression softened—just a little.

Only for her.

---

"I know," he said quietly.

---

Then it disappeared again as he looked back at the others.

---

"But that does not change what they are."

---

The room fell silent again.

---

Rina's mother spoke this time.

"And what are we?" she asked calmly.

---

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Our enemies."

---

The word landed like a blade.

---

Rina flinched.

"No," she said quickly. "We are not your enemies."

---

Kael's voice remained steady.

"You are werewolves."

A pause.

"We are vampires."

---

No one argued.

Because it was true.

---

Rina's father's expression hardened.

"And yet… we let you live."

---

Kael stepped forward slightly despite the strain in his body.

"And now you will let us leave."

---

Her father shook his head slowly.

"It is not that simple."

---

"Then make it simple," Kael replied.

---

Tension rose again.

---

Rina stepped between them without thinking.

"Stop," she said, her voice shaking now. "Please… just stop."

---

She turned to her father.

"They are not here to fight us."

---

"They do not have to be," he replied. "Their existence is enough."

---

She turned back to Kael.

"…You cannot leave like this."

---

Kael's gaze dropped briefly to where she stood between them.

Then back to her face.

---

"Move."

---

The word was quiet.

But firm.

---

Rina didn't.

---

Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"…You do not even see me, do you?"

---

That question hung in the air.

---

Kael didn't answer.

---

And that silence—

Was answer enough.

---

Rina stepped back slowly.

Her hands trembling slightly at her sides.

---

Lyria watched her, her chest tightening.

Because she understood now.

---

Not everything.

But enough.

---

Kael reached for Lyria's hand.

His grip firm.

Certain.

---

"We leave at first light," he said.

---

No one stopped him.

---

But no one agreed either.

---

And as the room slowly emptied—

The truth settled fully into place.

---

They were not guests.

They were not allies.

---

They were enemies who had shared the same roof for far too long.

---

And now—

They had to decide whether to let each other walk away…

Or destroy everything that had been built between them.
