Kai stayed up all night.
He couldn't sleep if he tried. Not with Anna curled up against his chest, fast asleep, peaceful as an undisturbed flower.
He also couldn't look away from her.
In the past four hours, he'd memorized every angle of her face. Down to the very tiny birthmark under her left eye which he'd never noticed before. He noticed for the first time, how lovely she was.
Maybe it's because he never got this close to the old princess. Maybe it's because he never cared. But something about Anna made him want to stare at her forever.
She looked at peace. Happy to be with him. Kai knew she was different the very first time he gave her his teeth and she looked like he'd punched her.
He would never punch her.
He couldn't even imagine hurting her.
Somehow, that terrified him. He worried he was losing his predatory instincts. But then he realized he had no problem imaging Leon as his dinner.
