Chapter 11 - Beneath the Hidden Door

The little girl appeared behind them again. Astha felt her presence before he turned, a cold ripple moving through the air as she stood in silence, her hollow eyes fixed on him. Slowly, she lifted her unfinished hand, the one without fingers, and pointed toward a wall of tangled vines where the forest thickened into shadow, then turned and began walking.

Yug frowned and asked, "She wants us to follow?" Astha watched her disappear into the dark and replied, "Yes." After a pause, he added in his usual unreadable tone, "If a ghost child asks politely, refusing seems rude." Yug gave him a look and said, "Why do you sound bored?" Astha stepped forward and answered, "I am curious," and then they followed.

The forest narrowed around them. Roots curled over the ground, wet moss coated fallen trunks, and vines brushed their shoulders like unseen hands. No birds called anymore, no insects sang, only the sound of their breathing remained.

The little girl led them through the overgrowth until she stopped in a hidden clearing swallowed by vines. At first it looked like ordinary ground, then Yug noticed the stone, a round slab set into the earth, almost concealed beneath dirt and moss, with rust gathered around an iron ring fixed at its center. The little girl pointed to it.

Yug stared and asked, "What is this?" Astha crouched, brushing moss away and saying, "This wasn't here naturally." He studied the weathering and added, "Maybe a couple years old."

Yug gripped the ring and pulled, but it resisted. He pulled harder, and then the stone groaned as the slab shifted and dust rose, revealing a hidden door sliding aside. Cold air breathed from the darkness below.

Yug stared into the opening and said, "There's stairs…" Astha peered in and remarked, "A secret underground chamber in a haunted forest." He tilted his head and added, "This day keeps improving."

They descended.

The staircase was narrow and damp. Stone walls sweated moisture, and drops echoed in the silence.

Then Yug's light swept upward and he froze.

Dolls hung from ropes, dozens of them suspended from the ceiling, turning gently as if watching. Their faces were grotesque, painted smiles split too wide, some with stitched mouths, some with cracked eyes, and some with carved expressions twisted in silent agony. Around every doll's neck was tied a Bloodmoon flower with dark red petals, fresh as if recently placed.

Yug whispered, "What kind of place is this…" Astha looked at a doll whose head was upside down and said, "That one appears offended."

Astha studied the room and said, "It is not normal." He pointed at a doll with human teeth and added, "That confirms it." A rope creaked and one doll slowly rotated toward them by itself.

Astha stared and said, "I dislike being observed."

They moved deeper, and the tunnel opened into a chamber where both stopped. An altar stood in the center, covered in dark stains, with knives, rusting chains, and ritual markings scratched into the floor. Beyond it were bones, small skeletons of children scattered near the walls, tiny skulls, small ribs, fragments of innocence left to rot.

Yug's face drained as he whispered, "Children…" Astha became very still, his thoughts accelerating as he said softly, "This is where they were taken."

The little girl stood beside the altar watching him, then pointed at the floor. Astha knelt and saw names scratched into the stone, children who vanished one after another.

Yug whispered, "This was hidden all this time…"

The little girl drifted silently past the altar and stopped near a dark corner of the chamber, then slowly raised her unfinished hand and pointed.

Yug lifted the flashlight and said, "What is that?"

Wooden boxes were stacked there, carefully and deliberately.

Astha stepped closer and said nothing for a moment as both of them went still. Inside the boxes were children's clothes, tiny sweaters folded neatly, small shoes placed in pairs, hair ribbons tied together, broken toys arranged side by side. Nothing had been thrown aside carelessly. Everything had been preserved, as though someone had treasured these things or collected them.

Yug stared and asked, "Why would anyone keep these?" Astha ran his fingers across a faded shirt and said, "This is not grief." After a pause he added, "This is obsession."

Then something metallic caught the light from beneath an old cloth. Astha reached in and pulled it out. It was a bracelet, a small silver bracelet sized for a child, with dark braided thread woven through the chain.

Yug frowned and said, "That does not look like it belongs with the others." Astha turned it over and said, "This may have been left here by mistake." There was a faint symbol scratched inside, nearly worn away, and small marks as if a child had carved them.

Yug asked, "You think it could be a clue?" Astha replied, "Possibly."

The little girl stepped closer and pointed at the bracelet again insistently. Yug lowered his voice and said, "She wanted us to see that."

Astha closed his fingers around it, and the chain made a metallic sound, clink, which echoed strangely in the chamber longer than it should have.

Then a giggle came, soft and close. Both froze. Another giggle answered from among the hanging dolls, then another. The ropes began to move, creak, creak, creak, and the dolls swayed slowly in the darkness.

One turned its cracked face toward them.

Yug stepped back and said, "No." Astha watched it and said calmly, "That seems unfortunate." Yug stared at him.

Astha slipped the bracelet into his pocket and said, "It may be evidence," then glanced at the moving dolls and added, "Or cursed jewelry." Yug snapped, "That is not helping."

Then small footsteps echoed from behind the altar. Both turned sharply. The darkness looked deeper now, heavier, as though something stood within it, watching and waiting.

Astha's hand rested over the bracelet in his pocket as he thought that finding it felt less like discovering evidence and more like disturbing something that had been sleeping.

The footsteps came again, soft and bare, pat, pat, pat, not hurried, not afraid, just approaching.

Yug raised the flashlight and pointed it toward the darkness, but for a moment nothing was there, until movement appeared.

The footsteps stopped. Silence swallowed the chamber. Yug slowly raised the knife in his grip.

The dolls hung motionless, smiling and watching.

Then giggle. One. Then another. Then dozens. Children laughing from every corner. The sound crawled through the dark like insects.

Yug backed toward Astha and said, "We need to leave."

Astha was staring upward at the dolls. One twitched. Its head jerked. Another turned. A third bent with a crack of porcelain. Then all at once the ropes snapped.

THAK. THAK. THAK.

The dolls hit the floor and began crawling and skittering, running on tiny limbs, their stitched mouths split wider as they giggled.

Yug shouted, "Misha!"

Three lunged at him. He swung his knife and cut one open, stuffing and black insects spilling out. Another clung to his shoulder biting with small human teeth. He stabbed it off and shouted, "Get off!"

A doll rushed Astha shrieking. Astha caught it midair, looked at it, then calmly patted its cracked head and said, "Behave," before setting it aside.

Another launched at his face. He smacked it away. A third bit his sleeve. He frowned and said, "No," and flicked it into a wall.

Yug stared in disbelief while fighting and said, "You are treating demon dolls like naughty children!" Astha grabbed one by the leg and said, "It is acting like one."

Then the dolls stopped. All of them. Still.

The chamber went silent.

Yug panted and asked, "Why did they stop?" Astha looked around and said, "That concerns me."

Then every doll slowly turned their heads toward them, smiling wider, eyes opening wider, and they screamed.

A hundred child voices filled the chamber.

And they attacked.

Not playfully now, but viciously. A swarm crawled over walls, dropped from the ceiling, clawed and bit. One leaped onto Yug's back. Another wrapped thread around his throat. He slashed wildly and shouted, "Misha!"

Astha tore dolls off him and threw them into stone pillars. One bit his wrist. He looked at it and said, "You have lost privilege," before smashing it against the altar.

But more came. Too many. A doll dropped onto his shoulders, another clawed Yug's face, blood ran.

The giggling returned, louder, madder, as if the dolls were enjoying it.

One grabbed Astha's ankle. Another climbed his back. He shook them off and muttered, "They have become unreasonable." Yug stabbed another and said, "This is beyond unreasonable!"

A doll lunged for Astha's throat. He caught it, patted its head, and said, "Calm down," before it bit him. He blinked and threw it into the swarm.

Even he looked mildly annoyed now.

Then something huge moved in the dark behind the altar.

The dolls suddenly became frenzied, driven, controlled, attacking harder.

Yug grabbed Astha's arm and shouted, "Let's go from here—NOW!"

For once, Astha nodded immediately.

That alone terrified Yug.

Then from the darkness a voice said, "Don't leave yet."

And every doll turned toward the tunnel exit, blocking it.

For once—

Astha nodded immediately.

That alone terrified Yug.

Because Astha only ran when something worse was coming.

Then from the darkness—

"Don't leave yet."

And every doll turned toward the tunnel exit—

blocking it.
