Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Assassin's Shadow

Chapter 35: The Assassin's Shadow

The copper taste flooded Seungho's mouth three steps before his door.

[THREAT DETECTION: IMMINENT]

[HOSTILES: 1 — CONCEALED IN CORRIDOR SHADOW]

[WEAPON: SHORT BLADE — POISON COATING DETECTED]

[COMBAT ANALYSIS: ENGAGING]

He did not slow his pace. Showing awareness would eliminate the advantage of knowing what waited. Instead, he continued toward his quarters with the measured steps of someone returning from a late-night meeting, his hand drifting casually toward his training sword as if adjusting his robes.

The attack came from the left alcove.

A shadow detached from the darkness—human-shaped, moving with the practiced economy of someone trained to kill efficiently. The assassin's blade caught the moonlight from a distant window, the steel glistening with something that made the DOIS scream warnings about neurotoxin compounds.

[COMBAT ANALYSIS: ACTIVE]

[ATTACKER: SECOND-RATE CULTIVATION — BLADE CLAN AFFILIATION]

[TECHNIQUE: SHADOW STEP ASSASSINATION FORM]

[VULNERABILITY NODES: 4]

[RECOMMENDED ENGAGEMENT: FULL CAPACITY — THREAT LETHAL]

Time dilated.

The assassin's opening strike was well-executed—a diagonal slash meant to open Seungho's throat before he could react. Against the prince Seungho pretended to be, it would have worked. Against the analyst with a demonic artifact feeding him real-time combat data, it was slow enough to map three steps ahead.

He stepped inside the arc of the blade, his training sword clearing its sheath in the same motion. The assassin's eyes widened—surprise at the speed, surprise at the angle, surprise at the competence of a prince who was supposed to be merely adequate.

First exchange: Seungho deflected the poisoned blade, letting the momentum carry his attacker past him.

Second exchange: He struck the assassin's wrist with the flat of his sword, numbing the grip. The poisoned blade clattered against the stone floor.

Third exchange: A spinning kick that drove his heel into the assassin's solar plexus, folding the man in half.

Eleven seconds from first strike to final defeat.

The assassin collapsed against the corridor wall, gasping for breath, his combat capacity destroyed. Seungho stood over him with his sword extended, the technique still resonating through his form—the afterimage of movements that exceeded anything he had displayed publicly.

[COMBAT COMPLETE]

[EXPOSURE LEVEL: 90% CAPACITY DISPLAYED]

[MASK DAMAGE: SEVERE]

"The assassin intended to kill. I could not afford to lose. But the victory cost more than the risk."

Running footsteps. Multiple sources. The corridor fight had drawn attention.

Ha-rin appeared first, emerging from the medical pavilion's night entrance with a diagnostic kit in her hands. Her healer's instincts had brought her toward sounds of violence. Chan-sung followed seconds later, his door two rooms down having given him front-row seats to the commotion.

Both of them saw Seungho standing over a disarmed assassin with a technique still dissipating from his form.

Chan-sung's expression shifted through several stages: surprise, reassessment, and something that looked like recognition. "That sequence—" His voice carried the weight of someone revising a fundamental assumption. "Seungho, that was not the technique of a mid-tier prince."

Ha-rin said nothing. But her eyes narrowed with the diagnostic focus Seungho had learned to dread. She was reading his elevated state—the qi circulation patterns visible in the afterglow of combat exertion. The DOIS's dantian modification would be briefly visible to someone with her training, the artifact's influence manifesting in the unusual energy signature that accompanied his enhanced reflexes.

"The assassin knew my schedule." Seungho forced his voice steady, redirecting attention toward the threat rather than his response. "He was waiting in the alcove."

"Blade Clan insignia." Chan-sung knelt beside the fallen attacker, examining his clothing. "They have been unstable since the Yeo-hyang conflict. Retaliating against perceived enemies."

"The Yeo-hyang mediation. My betrayal from twenty days ago generated this assassination attempt. Consequences arriving."

Academy guards appeared at the corridor's end, their response time adequate if not impressive. They secured the assassin with practiced efficiency, taking statements from the witnesses and examining the poisoned blade with appropriate caution.

"The Third Prince should be examined for injuries," Ha-rin said to the guard captain. Her voice was professionally neutral, but her gaze kept returning to Seungho's midsection where the dantian sat. "Combat toxins can enter through minor cuts."

"I am uninjured." The lie was minor—he had a small cut on his left forearm from the opening exchange, but acknowledging it would invite Ha-rin's diagnostic attention. "The assassin never connected."

"I saw the exchange," Chan-sung said, clapping Seungho's shoulder with the warmth of a friend sharing good news. "Hidden talent, brother. You have been holding back in training."

The words were meant as a compliment. They landed like an accusation.

"Adrenaline," Seungho deflected. "I moved better than I knew I could."

"Adrenaline does not teach technique sequences." Chan-sung's grin carried a new edge—the look of someone who had discovered a secret and intended to remember it. "We should spar seriously sometime. I want to see what else you have been hiding."

[MASK ASSESSMENT: SEVERELY COMPROMISED]

[CHAN-SUNG: REVISED MARTIAL ASSESSMENT — SIGNIFICANT UPWARD ADJUSTMENT]

[HA-RIN: OBSERVED COMBAT QI ANOMALY — DANTIAN REGION]

[PROBABILITY OF EVIDENCE LINKAGE: 45%]

The guards departed with the assassin. Chan-sung returned to his quarters with promises to discuss Seungho's "hidden talents" over breakfast. Ha-rin lingered.

"Let me see your forearm."

"There is nothing—"

"There is a cut." She was already reaching for his arm, her healer's training overriding any social hesitation. "I saw the blood when you moved. Small injuries from combat toxins are the most dangerous because people ignore them."

Her fingers were gentle as she examined the wound—a shallow slice across his forearm, barely bleeding. She cleaned it with methodical efficiency, her diagnostic attention obviously extending beyond the visible injury.

"Your qi circulation is unusual tonight." Her voice was carefully neutral. "The combat exertion... highlighted certain patterns I have observed before."

"She saw it. The DOIS modification was visible in my elevated state, and she recognized something."

"Combat changes many things temporarily."

"Yes." She finished bandaging the cut and released his arm. "It does."

She departed without further comment, but her diagnostic gaze lingered in memory—the look of someone who had collected another piece of a puzzle she was actively solving.

Seungho retreated to his quarters and ran the SWME at maximum processing capacity.

[EXPOSURE ASSESSMENT:]

[CHAN-SUNG: WILL DISCUSS COMBAT OBSERVATIONS WITH OTHERS — SPREAD PROBABILITY 85%]

[HA-RIN: COMBAT QI OBSERVATION MAY LINK TO EXISTING MERIDIAN DATA — CORRELATION PROBABILITY 60%]

[BLADE CLAN: ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT CONFIRMS YEO-HYANG BETRAYAL CONSEQUENCES — ADDITIONAL RETALIATION POSSIBLE]

[SIXTY-DAY WINDOW: REDUCED TO APPROXIMATELY 45 DAYS]

The assassination attempt had survived. The mask had not.

Chan-sung would tell others about the Third Prince's hidden martial talent. Ha-rin would add tonight's observations to her growing file. The Blade Clan retaliation confirmed that betrayal consequences were arriving faster than anticipated.

Seungho bandaged his forearm properly once he was alone, noting that the cut from the assassin mattered far less than the cuts to his cover. Steel healed faster than secrecy.

His first thought after the attack had not been relief at surviving. It had been annoyance at the mask damage.

"That ordering of priorities tells me something I do not want to hear about who I have become."
