Chapter 44: The Second Meeting
Sterling entered the gray fog with Telepathist perception active.
The emotional landscape hit like a wall of sound.
Six sources, six streams of feeling, six inner lives suddenly visible to senses that had been designed for exactly this purpose. The stolen abilities cut through the Castle's obscuring mist, reading the members who sat around the bronze table with an intimacy that felt almost obscene.
Sterling steadied himself and began cataloguing.
Alger Wilson—The Hanged Man—radiated pragmatic anxiety.
The Sequence 7 Mariner was worried about something specific, something connected to his Church duties. Beneath the worry: calculation, always calculation. Alger was measuring the other members against some internal scale, assessing their utility, tracking their potential value to his ongoing concerns. His cynicism wasn't performance—it was architecture, the emotional structure of a man who had learned to trust no one.
Fors Wall—The Magician—projected boredom masking loneliness.
The writer was present but not engaged, her attention drifting toward something outside the meeting. Beneath the surface disinterest: a desperate hunger for connection, for meaning, for stories that mattered. Her loneliness was old, comfortable, the kind that had become so familiar it felt like personality rather than wound.
Derrick Berg—The Sun—burned with desperate hope.
The young man from the City of Silver carried his people's survival on his shoulders, and the weight was crushing. Every word he spoke was tinged with urgency, with fear that he would fail, with hope that the Club could provide what his home could not. His faith was genuine—a bright light in the gray fog, pure in a way that made Sterling's chest ache.
And Audrey Hall—Justice—observed with curious intensity.
The Sequence 7 Psychiatrist was reading the room, just as Sterling was. Her Spectator abilities probed each member in turn, cataloguing emotional states, building profiles, learning what everyone felt beneath what they said. When her attention reached Sterling, something shifted.
She felt him reading her.
The counter-read lasted three seconds.
Audrey's Spectator abilities pushed against Sterling's Telepathist shield—not aggressive, just curious, the professional interest of someone who had detected something unusual. Her perception sought the edges of his emotional signature, looking for the source of the reading she had sensed.
Sterling deflected most of the probe.
But not all.
Audrey's eyes—or the avatar's approximation of eyes—widened fractionally. She had caught something. A fragment of anomaly. The sense that Sterling's emotional signature came from two sources rather than one, that his feelings were layered in ways that didn't quite match normal Beyonder psychology.
Confusion entered her emotional architecture. Then intrigue. Then a thread of alarm, quickly suppressed.
She did not report to The Fool.
Instead, she filed the observation away, adding it to whatever internal database she was building about the Club's newest member.
Sterling, reading her reaction, understood exactly what had happened.
The game had begun.
The Fool's emotions were shielded.
Sterling's Telepathist abilities slid off Klein Moretti's avatar like water off glass—no purchase, no insight, nothing but the smooth surface of perfect concealment. The transmigrator had learned to hide his feelings behind the persona he wore, and the protection was comprehensive.
Or perhaps the Castle itself was providing cover.
Either way, Sterling couldn't read the one person in the room who mattered most.
The meeting proceeded with its usual rituals. Members reported on their activities. Information was traded. Derrick described the City of Silver's latest crisis with the desperate hope that colored everything he said. Alger offered pragmatic suggestions that benefited his own interests. Fors mentioned a book she was researching, her boredom lifting briefly when the topic engaged her.
Sterling provided a lead.
"I've encountered references to an Abraham family artifact," he said. "A ring, reportedly, connected to Sequence 8 of their pathway. The location is uncertain, but the trail begins in the Intis Republic."
Fors's emotional signature shifted instantly—surprise, then gratitude, then excited curiosity. The information was relevant to her ongoing research, and the unexpected gift caught her off-guard.
"That's... thank you," she said. "I've been searching for Abraham connections for months."
Sterling felt her gratitude through the Telepathist, and his chest ached through the fog.
Genuine emotion. Genuine connection. The Club was providing what Fors's lonely life had denied her, and Sterling was feeding that need while planning to betray everyone at the table.
The green tint around his seat deepened imperceptibly.
Sterling returned to his body in the alley where he had hidden.
The emotional residue of six inner lives clung to his consciousness like perfume in an empty room. Alger's anxiety. Fors's loneliness. Derrick's hope. Audrey's curious alarm.
The tenement felt emptier for the comparison.
Sterling sat in the darkness and processed what he had learned. The Telepathist shield had worked—mostly. Audrey had detected something, but she hadn't identified it. She was suspicious but not certain, curious but not alarmed enough to report.
The window was narrowing.
Two meetings used. Two or three remaining before the Castle's passive detection accumulated enough data to flag Sterling's presence as anomalous. Before Audrey's growing abilities pierced the shield entirely. Before Klein's careful attention noticed patterns that didn't fit.
The permanent Telepathist was necessary.
Orin's destruction was inevitable.
Sterling rose and walked toward home, carrying Audrey's confusion like perfume in an empty hallway.
He caught himself wanting to explain.
The impulse was dangerous—a remnant of the humanity the parasite was slowly consuming. Audrey was an enemy, a threat, a Spectator whose abilities could destroy everything Sterling was building. Wanting to explain anything to her was weakness.
But the wanting remained.
