Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: The Cold Calculus of Albus Dumbledore

## **Chapter 13: The Cold Calculus of Albus Dumbledore**

Albus Dumbledore sat in the quiet of his office, but the usual comforting hum of his silver instruments felt discordant, like a symphony played slightly out of tune. He stared at a bowl of lemon drops, but for the first time in years, he had no appetite for them.

His eyes drifted to the window, overlooking the Great Lake where the giant squid lazily broke the surface. Somewhere down there, in the Ravenclaw Tower, sat Julian Vane.

### **The Boy Who Calculated**

Albus had seen many "disturbing" children in his long tenure. He had seen the burning, brilliant cruelty of Tom Riddle—a boy who sought power through fear and the dark arts. But Julian Vane was something entirely different, and in many ways, far more dangerous.

Julian didn't seek to break the world; he sought to **appraise** it.

"He doesn't want to rule the Ministry, Severus," Albus said softly to the shadows of his office.

Severus Snape stepped forward, his black robes blending into the gloom. "The boy is a menace. He has half the seventh-years acting as his personal 'analysts.' I caught a group of them in the back of my class yesterday—not brewing Draught of Living Death, but calculating the 'yield curves' of Potion ingredient futures."

"And did they succeed?" Albus asked.

"Exemplarily," Snape spat. "They made more gold in forty minutes of 'trading' than I earn in a month of teaching."

### **The Erosion of Authority**

Dumbledore stood and paced the room. He felt the weight of the **Hogwarts Mortgage** like a physical chain. He had spent his life protecting the school from Dark Lords and external interference, but he had no defense against a child who simply bought the debt.

The Board of Governors had already begun to push for "Practical Curriculum Adjustments." They wanted to replace Divination with "International Trade and Magical Law." They wanted to turn the Owlery into a "Logistics Center."

"I see it in the students' eyes, Severus," Albus whispered. "They no longer look at magic as a wonder. They look at it as a utility. A tool for accumulation. Julian isn't teaching them to be wizards; he is teaching them to be creditors."

### **The Moral Deficit**

Dumbledore's greatest worry wasn't just the gold—it was the **debt-bondage**. He knew about the secret credit lines Julian had extended to the Ministry and the Pureblood families. He saw how Lucius Malfoy walked with a newfound, smug confidence. The light side was being outspent. The very foundations of the post-war peace were built on a loan that could be called in at any moment.

"If the boy is the source of the gold," Snape asked, "where is he getting it? He is eleven. No ancient vault is that bottomless."

"That is the question that keeps the stars awake, Severus. He moves through the Muggle world as easily as he moves through ours. He treats the two worlds as a single market. He is a bridge, but he is a bridge made of iron and interest."

### **The Final Warning**

Albus looked at a moving photograph on his desk—the baby Harry Potter, safe in Surrey. He had hoped for a decade of peace to prepare for the return of the shadows. But a new shadow had arrived early, and it didn't wear a hood or carry a dark mark. It wore a Ravenclaw tie and carried a ledger.

"He told me he didn't want to own the air," Albus murmured. "Only that we remember who provided the oxygen."

"A chilling sentiment," Snape remarked.

"More than chilling, Severus. It is a claim of ownership over life itself. If I move against him, I bankrupt the Ministry and close the school. If I do nothing, I leave the world to a boy who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing."

Dumbledore picked up a lemon drop and finally popped it into his mouth. It tasted like ash.

Julian, watching the report from his Neural-Link, didn't flinch. He simply adjusted the interest rate on the Ministry's secret account by 0.05%. A small reminder of who held the quill.
