Chapter 65 - Chapter 65 — Peak Within Limits

By the time their cultivation stabilized within Foundation Establishment, Lin Mo and Shi Yue had already outgrown the pace of ordinary inner sect disciples. Their routines no longer needed adjustment, their efficiency no longer fluctuated, and their progress no longer depended on trial and error. What remained was simple—optimization.

And for that, they returned once more to the Technique Pavilion.

This time, they didn't head toward the common sections.

They moved deeper.

The restriction formations grew denser as they advanced, reacting subtly to their tokens. Their accumulated contribution and inner sect status allowed them further access, but not without limit. At the innermost accessible section for disciples at their level, the selection narrowed significantly.

High-tier Mortal Grade.

The peak of what this world could reasonably offer them at their current stage.

Shi Yue slowed her steps, her gaze scanning carefully. "This is the limit for us right now."

Lin Mo nodded. "Then we take the best."

There was no hesitation in their approach. They were not here to browse or experiment. They were here to choose the techniques that would define their next phase.

Shi Yue stopped first.

Her attention fixed on a jade slip placed separately from the others. "Mortal Grade Peak — Veilstep Flow Art."

She read silently for a few seconds before speaking. "Not just movement. It blends perception and positioning. It forces opponents into disadvantage before they act."

Lin Mo didn't question it. "Take it."

She nodded.

Lin Mo moved further along the offensive section. His eyes passed over several techniques before settling on one placed at the very end.

"Mortal Grade Peak — Earthshatter Pulse."

He activated it partially, enough to understand its nature. Unlike Iron Pulse Fist, this technique did not focus on continuous chaining. It focused on controlled release—compressing force within each strike and releasing it in a way that disrupted both body and Qi.

Shi Yue stepped closer. "Higher control requirement."

"Better output," Lin Mo replied.

She didn't argue.

"That's yours."

They completed the exchange.

The cost was significant.

Nearly half of their accumulated contribution.

But neither of them hesitated.

This was not spending.

This was investment.

They stepped outside and didn't even return to their quarters. Instead, they moved directly toward a quieter training zone, one of the less populated areas used by disciples who preferred isolation over shared grounds.

Lin An'an followed as always, quiet but attentive.

The moment they activated their new techniques, the difference was clear.

These were not just stronger.

They were more complete.

Shi Yue's Veilstep Flow Art didn't simply change how she moved—it changed how movement itself functioned around her. Each step subtly influenced positioning, not just reacting to opponents but shaping their possible actions before they occurred.

Lin Mo's Earthshatter Pulse required far greater control than anything he had used before. Each strike demanded compression of Qi before release. When executed correctly, the impact didn't just carry force—it disrupted stability.

The first attempts were imperfect.

Naturally.

But unlike before, the adaptation was rapid.

Their Foundation Establishment allowed them to absorb the structure of these techniques far faster than they could have at Qi Refinement.

Entry proficiency was reached within days.

Minor accomplishment began forming within a week.

Their growth rate had already accelerated.

Now it surged.

At the same time, something else began to shift.

The way other disciples interacted with them.

It wasn't confrontation.

Not yet.

But it was attention.

Their task completion speed, their resource usage, their time spent in higher-tier sections—it was all being noticed. In a sect, progress was never invisible. It either earned respect, or it attracted pressure.

Shi Yue noticed it first. "We're being watched."

Lin Mo didn't look around. "Let them."

They weren't at a level where hiding mattered.

Not anymore.

A few days later, that attention turned into something more direct.

A summons.

Not from an elder.

From the sect leader's hall.

That alone was enough to shift the atmosphere.

Shi Yue looked at the token they had been given, her expression calm but focused. "We didn't cause trouble."

Lin Mo nodded. "Which means this isn't punishment."

They both understood what it likely was.

Evaluation.

They walked to the sect leader's hall without delay.

The structure stood at the highest point of the inner sect, not extravagant, but imposing in a way that didn't rely on appearance. The pressure surrounding it was subtle, but unmistakable.

When they entered, the air itself felt heavier.

Not oppressive.

But absolute.

At the center of the hall stood a single figure.

Sect Leader — Gu Han.

He did not release his aura fully.

But even in restraint, the difference in realm was clear.

Half-step Core Formation.

The peak of this world.

Shi Yue's perception sharpened instinctively.

Lin Mo remained steady.

Neither of them spoke first.

Gu Han observed them silently for a few moments, his gaze calm, unreadable. Then he spoke.

"You advanced quickly."

It wasn't praise.

It was a statement.

Lin Mo answered simply. "We did what was needed."

Gu Han's gaze lingered slightly longer.

"…And more."

There was no hostility in his tone.

Only interest.

Shi Yue spoke this time. "If there is an issue, Sect Leader, we will correct it."

Gu Han shook his head slightly. "No issue."

A brief pause followed.

Then—

"You are approaching a limit."

That made both of them focus.

Gu Han continued, "This sect… this world… cannot support unlimited growth. Foundation Establishment is already considered strong here. Beyond that—resources thin, paths narrow, and progress slows."

Lin Mo understood immediately.

"…Ascension."

Gu Han looked at him.

"…Yes."

The word settled heavily in the hall.

Shi Yue's voice remained calm. "At what point?"

Gu Han's response was direct. "Half-step Core Formation."

The same realm he stood at.

"Break that threshold," he continued, "and this world will no longer be able to contain you."

Silence followed.

Not confusion.

Not hesitation.

Understanding.

Gu Han stepped slightly forward, his presence sharpening just enough to make the difference in their levels undeniable.

"You have talent," he said. "Enough to reach that point."

Then he added,

"But only if your foundation holds."

Lin Mo didn't respond immediately.

Then he said, "It will."

Gu Han studied him for a moment longer, then gave a slight nod.

"…We will see."

The pressure eased slightly.

The conversation was over.

As they left the hall, neither of them spoke immediately.

The path ahead had just become clearer.

Not just progression.

A destination.

Shi Yue finally spoke as they stepped outside.

"…Half-step Core."

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Then we don't stop before that."

She gave a small nod.

There was no hesitation.

No doubt.

Their next phase was set.

They had the techniques.

They had the foundation.

They had the direction.

Now—

they only needed time.

And when that time passed—

they would not just be stronger.

They would be ready to leave this world behind.
