Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 — Names of the First Steps

They didn't realize when the forest changed.

Not immediately.

But by midday, it was clear something was different.

The trees had thinned further, the ground smoother, the air lighter. Even the sounds had changed—fewer insects, fewer distant calls. It felt… quieter.

Not peaceful.

Just… less alive.

Lin Mo slowed slightly, scanning ahead.

"…It's too open," he said.

Shi Yue nodded. "…We'll be seen more easily."

That alone was enough to put them on edge.

They adjusted their path, keeping to the edges where shadows still held, moving with more caution than before.

But they didn't stop.

Because stopping didn't change anything anymore.

It was Lin Mo who noticed it first.

A mark.

Not on the ground—

on a tree.

A deep cut.

Clean.

Too clean.

He stepped closer, running his fingers lightly over it.

"…This wasn't an animal," he said.

Shi Yue came beside him.

"…A blade?"

"…Yeah."

The cut was too precise, too controlled. It hadn't been made in struggle.

It had been made effortlessly.

That alone said enough.

They didn't have to search long.

Further ahead, the ground was disturbed.

Trees bent.

Branches broken.

And at the center—

a body.

A beast.

Larger than anything they had seen before.

Its body was split cleanly along its side, the wound smooth, almost unnatural. There was no sign of struggle around it. No scattered earth. No dragged marks.

It had died—

instantly.

Lin Mo stopped a few steps away.

Shi Yue's expression tightened slightly.

"…This wasn't a fight," she said.

"…No."

It wasn't.

It was execution.

Voices.

Lin Mo reacted instantly, pulling Shi Yue and Lin An'an down behind a cluster of rocks.

They didn't speak.

Didn't move.

"…Waste of time."

The voice was calm.

Unbothered.

Footsteps followed.

Two figures.

Both young.

Both… different.

Not just in appearance—

in presence.

One of them carried a sword loosely at his side, its edge clean. The other had his hands behind his back, walking without urgency.

They stopped near the corpse.

The swordsman clicked his tongue.

"Barely at the second layer of Qi Refinement," he said. "Not even worth the effort."

The other shrugged. "That's expected in a place like this."

"…Outer regions really are barren."

Lin Mo's grip tightened slightly.

Qi… Refinement.

Second layer.

He didn't understand it fully.

But he understood enough.

This beast—

something far beyond what he could handle—

was considered weak.

The second man continued, his tone almost bored.

"At this level, you shouldn't even bother taking action yourself. It's a waste of time."

The swordsman smirked. "What, you expect me to wait until Foundation Establishment before moving?"

"Of course not," the other replied. "But at least something worth killing."

Foundation Establishment.

Another term.

Another level.

Lin Mo's mind held onto it immediately.

They didn't stay long.

The swordsman glanced around once, then turned away.

"Let's go. There's nothing here."

The other nodded.

And just like that—

they left.

Silence returned.

But it didn't feel the same anymore.

Lin Mo didn't move immediately.

He stayed crouched, replaying the words in his mind.

Qi Refinement.

Second layer.

Foundation Establishment.

Not worth the effort.

Outer region.

"…We're at the bottom," Shi Yue said quietly.

It wasn't fear.

It wasn't doubt.

Just understanding.

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Not even at the first step."

Because now—

he knew.

What they had been doing…

Those cycles…

That faint awareness…

That was the beginning.

Of something called—

Qi Refinement.

Lin An'an shifted slightly, her small hand gripping Lin Mo's sleeve.

"Mo…" she murmured.

Lin Mo looked down at her.

Then back ahead.

At the dead beast.

At the direction those men had gone.

"…It's fine," he said.

Shi Yue looked at him.

"…Is it?"

Lin Mo nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

Because now—

they had direction.

Not just movement.

Not just survival.

But a path with names.

With stages.

With distance.

"…Qi Refinement," Shi Yue said quietly, as if testing the words.

Lin Mo repeated it in his mind.

"…And something beyond it."

Foundation Establishment.

He didn't know what it meant.

But he knew—

it was far away.

Shi Yue glanced at the corpse again.

"…They said this place is an outer region."

Lin Mo nodded.

"…Which means there are places stronger than this."

"…Much stronger."

Neither of them sounded intimidated.

If anything—

they sounded certain.

A brief silence passed.

Then Shi Yue added, almost as an afterthought—

"…They also mentioned nothing about body or spirit."

Lin Mo glanced at her.

"…You noticed that?"

She nodded.

"…Which means this isn't everything."

Not the full system.

Not the full path.

Just one part.

Lin Mo stood up slowly.

"…Then we'll start with this."

Qi Refinement.

First step.

Shi Yue stood beside him.

Not behind.

Not following.

Beside.

"…And the rest?" she asked.

Lin Mo looked ahead.

Then said simply—

"…We'll reach it when we get there."

They didn't stay near the corpse.

Didn't approach it further.

Didn't test their limits.

Because now—

they understood where they stood.

As they moved forward again, their pace didn't slow.

If anything—

it became sharper.

More focused.

Because now—

every step had meaning.

They weren't wandering anymore.

They had entered the path.

And this time—

they knew its name.
