Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Yawn

< In a small room >

"Damn it, Jill, hang in there!"

"I stopped the bleeding, but she is getting worse."

"This is all your fault, Wesker!"

"Calm down, Barry, this is not the time."

"How is Frost looking?"

"He took a hit to the head. Could be unconscious or worse. I have no idea, I'm not a medic."

"It's fine, Chris, you have done everything you could."

< 30 minutes ago, in the graveyard >

Team POV

Hissssss

"SCATTER!" Wesker barked.

The mutated snake (Yawn) lunged into the team as they tried to scatter. Five flashes lit up the dark graveyard as muzzle fire burst. Bullets tore into the serpent's hide, drawing shrill hisses but failing to slow its furious advance.

Yawn struck back with terrifying speed. Its body coiled around a mausoleum, crushing stone as if it were paper. Jill was knocked aside while reloading. Before she could move, fangs sank into her shoulder before Chris drove the creature back with a desperate volley aimed for the monster's eye. Barry covered, firing until his gun was empty.

"USE THE GL, FROST!!!!" Wesker shouted as he jumped on the back of the monster to get to Jill.

Frost fumbled with the grenade launcher in his hand, raising it, ready to fire.

"GET CLEAR!!"

As soon as Frost said it, Wesker managed to climb to the head of the monster and drove his combat knife into the monster's left eye. The monster let go of Jill and started thrashing around from pain. Wesker barely managed to get to Jill and grabbed her before being hit with the monster's enormous and incredibly heavy tail, sending both crashing into and through a tombstone.

The moment Frost had a clear shot, he took it, launching six high-explosive grenades roaring through the chaos. The final blast engulfed Yawn's head in fire, the shockwave throwing Frost off balance, causing him to get hit by the thrashing monster, sending him flying into a gravestone as the serpent let out one final, echoing scream.

When the smoke cleared, Yawn lay motionless, its massive body half-buried among shattered graves. Silence returned, broken only by labored breathing. Every weapon was dry, every magazine spent. Jill clutched her bleeding arm, teeth clenched against the pain, while Chris dragged the unconscious Frost to safety. Wesker started applying first aid to Jill's arm as Barry checked on the monster snake's dead corpse.

"Looks like I owe you one now, Captain," Jill said, trying to laugh through the pain.

"I'm sorry, Jill, this is my fault. I should have been more cautious. I didn't think that thing would be in the graveyard, damn it." Jill looked confused by that and was about to ask when she fell unconscious. Chris saw this and rushed over.

"Jill! Is she okay? What happened?" Chris asked rapidly.

"We need to get out of here first. Barry, help Chris with Frost. We're going back inside," I told the two, who looked beaten and exhausted from the fight.

< Returning back to the small room >

MC POV

"She is poisoned. We need an antidote, but I don't know how to make it," I said to Chris and Barry.

"Who would?" Chris asked.

"Rebecca, if she is still alive, that is."

Chris and Barry visibly got more anxious.

"And how the hell are we going to find her in this big-ass mansion?" Barry asked, getting annoyed with Wesker's suggestion.

"We don't have any ammo. How are we supposed to fight these monsters?" Chris asked, worried.

"You two are not going anywhere," I told the two of them, which made them tense up, especially Barry. "I need you two to keep them safe. I'm going alone."

Chris and Barry were about to argue, but I cut them off. "No arguments. I know what I'm doing and how to deal with these monsters. I will move faster alone."

As soon as I said that, a voice behind Chris and Barry came out weak and raspy.

Cough, cough

"Can I talk to Wesker alone?" Jill asked. Chris and Barry looked relieved that Jill was awake but worried. However, they complied with her request and exited the room.

"How are you feeling, Jill?"

"Like my body is on fire."

"Hang in there a little longer. I'll get the antidote, and you will feel right as rain in no time," I said as I started to lose control of my emotions. Guilt, pain, and fear all crept into me as I looked at Jill dying on the small bed.

Jill raised her hand and cupped my face. "It's okay, Wesker. It's not your fault. I just wish I had the guts to tell you sooner how I felt about you, but it's too late."

That broke the dam holding back my emotions, and tears started falling.

"Hey, it's okay, Wesker. Just promise me you'll look after them. Get them out of this nightmare."

Before I could answer, her eyes closed and her hand fell. My heart sank as I checked her pulse. It was still there—she just fell unconscious again. I looked at her, and the pain, guilt, and fear were all gone, replaced by a burning determination as bright as the sun.

Chris POV

"Barry, what's going on between you and him?"

"Nothing," said Barry as he avoided eye contact with Chris. Chris knew this was Barry's habit whenever he was lying.

"Bullshit. You have been on his ass this whole time. What the hell is going on, Barry? I think I have the right to know."

Sigh. Barry rubbed his face and said, "Me and him have some personal problems. Bottom line, I don't trust him—not here, not anymore."

"And why the hell is that exactly? Because so far he has risked his life multiple times to save our asses, so I need more than that, Barry."

"It's for him to tell, not me," Barry responded in a tone leaving no room for further discussion.

"What are we going to do about Jill?"

"I don't know, Chris, I don't know," Barry said in a self-defeating tone.

The door to the room behind them opened as Wesker stormed out.

"Where the hell are you going?" Barry asked, with more venom in his voice than he intended.

Wesker didn't look back. He stopped and said, "Keep them safe. I'll be right back."

MC POV

No one is dying in this shithole. Over my dead body. I need to find Rebecca. First, the small library on the 2nd floor.

I rushed back to the main hall, up the staircase to the 2nd floor, kicked in the locked door leading to the small library. Behind it were multiple shambling figures.

"Get the fuck out of my way."

Rushing in and quickly dispatching the walkers, I pulled the combat knife that I borrowed from Frost. I heard a high-pitched scream down the corridor—distant but not too far.

I rushed down to a white door at the end of the L-shaped corridor and opened it to a small library. It was empty. No monsters, no Rebecca.

"FUCK!" I groaned with frustration.

Thud, pfff, awhaaaa,

Sounds of what seemed to be a struggle were coming through the other door in the small library. Hearing that, I rushed through the door into a narrow walkway that split off to my immediate right, leading to another door. A little further to the left, a twisting staircase led back down to the first floor, and straight ahead at the end of the corridor was a group of monsters tripping over each other to get to the end where a petite-framed female, with soft features that still carried traces of youth, was. She had short brown hair, wearing a S.T.A.R.S green and white uniform that was covered in dirt and dried blood.

"REBECCA!!" I screamed her name as I charged the group of monsters trying to get to her.

Six monsters turned towards me while Rebecca was still struggling to keep one at bay. These were not the slow, rotting walkers. Their lean bodies pulled tight like sinew, skin flushed a raw, blood-dark red as though soaked from within. Sunken eyes burned with feral awareness, lips peeled back to reveal blackened teeth locked in a constant snarl. They moved not with the dead sluggish drag, but with sudden, violent speed. Their hands and feet were elongated with sharp claws bigger than knives protruding from them.

Then I collided with them.

Author,

Hey everyone. Hope you have been enjoying the story. I just want to give a clear schedule for my uploads. Starting next week on Wednesdays and Fridays I will upload a chapter per day (2 chapters a week). I know that might be a little slow for some, but I have a full-time job and only have a small amount of time to write. But not to worry I have no intention of stopping or dropping this story. I am writing this story as much for myself as for you and I will not stop until we complete this story.
